Whoa Mary....you and your bodacious boobs!!!! They look great! I'm envious - especially since I'm lopsided!!! I will admit it is slow going with the hair because I was done with chemo 3/16 and the thickness has come in but not length. I'm going to visit relatives at the end of the month and I was hoping it would be longer. Oh well, no big deal because it IS hair and I've always had short hair. Great news about the job!!!!

I have been going to water aerobics faithfully but got turned away this a.m. because there was thunder and lightening in the area. So, I came home and hopped in my own pool and worked out for about 30 minutes. I've been able to maintain my weight which is what I want to do but my rear end feels like it is spreading (I can feel it in my clothes).

Mary, what kind of recon did you have? I am debating. No implants for me because of rads (unless they do lat flap).

Big boobies and tats - sweet.

oh, ha. I just noticed the avatar. Mama mia! They look great. I was done with chemo end of December and my hair is pretty short still. I miss my long hair, but oh well, it's slowly growing...

    Have great evening ladies.

    Raye,

I did a bilateral mast (right side was prophyllactic) after a failed lumpectomy. I had immediate recon with alloderm and tissue expanders, and then I swapped out the expanders for silicone in May. It's funny, becuase if you had told me before BC that I would ever willingly put silicone in my body, I would have NEVER believed it. But when it came time to decide between saline and silicone, I went with the nice squishy ones!

BTW, your hair looks great! I finished chemo March 30, and I am still wearing a wig to work. Hoping that when I start the new job next month I will have enough hair to say goodbye to the wig.

    Mary,

I know it! I never wanted implants and I was small (or sporty as I like to say). Having proph R mast in Sept and trying to decide what to do. No immediate tissue expender in L breast due to rads.

Thanks for the compliment on the hair. In the pic, yours seems to be long enough to go without a wig. ?

Hey Blue - thanks. That picture was mid June and I finished my Chemo on March 22nd. Just feels like it's growing so slowly but everyone tells me it's really coming in. Glad you are recovering from the exchange surgery, it's a ways off for me.

Blue, I think you have to restart your computer to see the new photos. I changed the avatar at home and thought it didn't work because the photo didn't change on my home computer. But when I got to work, there it was! Hope you are feeling well!

Carol, I finished chemo a week after you, and that picture was taken July 4th. Where is my %$#@ hair? I am going to ask my doctor about Rogaine when I see him in two weeks. The hairs I have are really long, but it is so thin! And my eye lashes are back, but my eyebrows are very patchy! Do they make Rogaine for eyebrows?

Some of you mentioned red wine. Why are you avoiding it? My doctor told me to limit alcohol to 2-3 drinks per week, which is not a problem for me, but I have been choosing red wine over my beloved vodka because I thought it was better for you. Am I wrong? Because I love a dirty martini!

Mary: Got it....had to hit the "refresh" button. You DO look great!!!! I have two more weeks of the 24/7 surgi or sport bra.

My girlfriend suggested a rinse in my hair so it looks like I have more volume....BIG MISTAKE... it is too dark. AND, it's premanent color. THink I could strip it???? HELP!!!

Mary - I am avoiding red wine because I have no interest after chemo. Prior to bc, I drank 1-2 glasses every night and just don't want to get back into the habit....my onco said to limit alcohol intake since I'm ER/PR+>90%. After feeling like crap on chemo, I am thinking I don't want to self-inflict a hangover.

Mary...wow you're sure look beautiful. You're an inspiration for all of us!! Who cares about hair if you've got a bod!!!!

I've been off the boards for a while...there's been a lot of heavy stuff going on with some of the friends I've made here, really scary,...and I've been so upset I've drinking every night for almost a week!!! Gin & tonics!!! Terrible, terrible, it's got to stop.

But I'm still at 131.5, not too far off my weight loss schedule.

Another things which I haven't told anybody is that I've been getting some wierd allergic reactions and my allergist is trying to figure out what it is. So I'm off my allergy medication and off everything except my anti-hormonals to make sure they're OK. I can't even go outside because she's afraid I'll get a bug bite.

So now I am not supposed to run or ride a bike.

Yesterday (I still have some mosquito bites on my chest) I started getting a reaction. I suddenly started getting itchy all over; this is how people feel before an anaphalactic reaction. So I took a benadryl and everything calmed down. I have a tube of anti-histamine cream I can use (it cost $129) to take care of the bites now.

I really, really hope this doesn't interfere with my trip to Monhegan Island this summer. There is no medical help on the island and the boat takes two hours. But doc says she thinks we'll have the allergy figure out by then.

But I am a little thinner & so is DH despite all, so there!

    Mizsissy,

So sorry to hear about your friend. Bless her and she will be in my thoughts.

I have been stressed as of late (because of work - cannot even compare to what you are going through) and have been sneaking the occasional cig! ugh. With rads, that is a definite no no.

Odd about your reaction. I was working in the yard the other day for a few hours. Came in and had tiny bumps all over my body and I felt hot/itchy all over. My leg was also numb in the thigh area. Very strange. I chalked it up to encountering some sort of plant, but I was not in any weeds, just planting flowers in containers, which I've done for years. The next day I was better, but it was odd.

Hope all is well. I am not a spa girl, as I haven't worked out in 4 WEEKS. I suck. But I do enjoy all of your company, so will continue to participate in this thread!

Mary - I have to agree - with a bod like that! wow. Your hair will get better.

Blue- I would be uneasy about trying to strip the color. Your hair is probably pretty fragile from the chemo, and that might push it over the edge. If you can live with it for a few weeks, you could try a different color then.

MizS, I am so sorry you are going through a rough time. Be good to yourself. So, you have not figured out what is causing the allergic reaction? How did you get the mosquito bites? We call mosquitoes the state bird in Louisiana!

Hope everybody has a great weekend. I got the official job offer yesterday, so I am going to wrap things up here next week and enjoy two weeks off with my hubby and kids before the new job starts! I'll be brown bagging it at the new job, so my eating habits should REALLY improve. (I work at a culinary school right now, so I have 60 students wanting me to taste their food every day on top of the gourmet lunch they serve. I know I will miss the food, but at the same time I really want to have more control over what I eat.)

Did you all see the study about BC and diet? They had two groups of survivors. One group ate a diet of more than 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day while the other group followed the FDA guidelines. There was no apparent benefit in eating more fruits and veggies! And here I've been a vegetarian for twenty years! Hmph!

Wish you all a great weekend.

Hi Raye, and Mary, nice to hear from you...so soon.

Raye, if you or any of you ever get that all over itchy feeling again taking a Benadryl immediately!!!! It could ward off a serious allergic reaction.

Mary, congratulations on your new job!!! That's so exciting, especially to have something like this happen as you re-emerge from treatment and get your life going again.

Now, I've got to get my day started. I'm still sitting here with my tea and my laptop it's 11:42 already!!!!

Mary, WOW, I got it too. You look great! As for the red wine question. I have read that wine as well aas alcohol turn to sugar in your body. Because I am ER positive and sugar feeds estrogen, most Docs suggest 2 - 3 drinks per week. I don't drink a lot, mostly just weekends. And red wine is all I really drink so I am sticking with it. I envy you with your ability to cook although working at a culinary school would be awful for me. I don't cook at all, my husband jokes that when I do make something, he wants to invite the pygmies over to dip their darts in it! He is a great cook and loves it. My two daughters were asked in school when they were younger "What is your favorite meal that your Mom makes?' One answered 'macaroni and cheese from a box' and the other one said 'cereal'! We're all better off if I stay out of the kitchen.
MizSissy, Scary about the reactions you are having. Hopefully your doc will get it figured out so you won't have to worry on vacation. I have found that the alcohol really slows my weight loss progress but i'm not willing to give it up totally! I am so sorry to hear about your friend.
Raye, I have been working out and really enjoying it not that I am into a routine. I haven't weighed in on the spreadsheet though. But, like you, I enjoy coming her to see how everyone is doing. I am on vacation for the next two weeks, going to a house we rented in Long Beach Island. Have a great weekend everyone!

    Hello gals,

Well the allergy thing has totally died down; I am pretty sure it was contact dermatitis, getting poisin ivy from the cats.

My main reason for posting this AM is to let those of you know who are friends of Puppy that she had her major surgery and is doing OK...we started a celebration thread for her if any of you want to go over there and post...

    http://community.breastcancer.org/ubbthr...&PHPSESSID=

I haven't weighed in recently, but I am pretty sure I am losing weight...

    Mizsissy,
I am so glad to read that your friend is doing well. I stopped by the thread, what a hoot....
She is well loved and I have no doubt that her future looks bright!

I am glad that your contact dermatitis has cleared and that you are losing weight.

    Mary,
    You look hot!
Good luck on the new job.

    Carol,
I wish I could develop some discipline with my wine. Today I stayed away from wine but after my kick butt bike ride I felt the need to rehydrate with a couple of Budwisers.

Anyone been watching the Tour de France? I have to admit I am a junky and glad to see Alberto Contador the winner. He has quite a comeback story. (Mizsissy, He was riding his bike when an aneurysm burst and here he is winning the most arduous bike race in the world. Gives one great hope doesn't it?)

I'm off to the beach this Friday for the family reunion. I think that my cousins/cousins-in-laws, brother, sister-in-law and I have some serious bike riding to do. I just hope that they don't leave me in their dust.
Let me just say that it is tough being part of an athletic family.

I hope everyone had a good weekend.

    MzS,

I will visit Puppy's celebratory thread in a moment. SO glad to hear the news! I sent her a card last week. She must have gotten bombarded with love and she certainly deserves it!

Casey, have a wonderful time. Is this the Nag's Head trip? You'll be leaving them in the dust! I too, come from an athletic family - 4 brothers - I didn't get the fast running gene. My brother once ran a 3 something minute mile. My other brother recently ran a marathon in Atlanta and came in 20th, I believe.

On the reconstruction front (no pun intended), ONLY option for me is TRAM, ugh. with the rads, they won't even do free TRAM - two docs saying the same thing. I am having proph mast on August 22 with no recon for now. I just can't tear up my body for A cups. Not now anyway.

    take care all.
    xoxo

    Hi Gals,

Sorry for neglecting you this past week. So much has been goin on...family melodramas on all sides.

My vacation starts TODAY!! Hubby and I are drinking tea & coffee in bed as I type. The car and clothes are packed. We just going to get dressed and get in the car and GO!!

We are driving through Ontario to NY to visit relatives, then on through Vermont and NH to Maine where we'll spend some time on the coast and on Monhegan Island. We'll come back via Quebec City and parlay a little Fransay.

My big goal was to get below 130 before vacation and guess what! I was 128 on the doctors scale three days ago. But I can't get my scale to go below 130.5!!! Should I buy a new scale?!!

Hope yall are having lots of fun this summer and getting slim, trim & fit. I had a really good run yesterday, and then had so much steam left over I biked 10 miles. So we're reaching some goals...that's a long way from chemo!!!

    See you in September...

    Ladies,
We can't let this thread come to a halt just because Mizsissy is galavanting on vacation!
It's time to report our progress!
I for one must say that I belong to the only family where you can ride your bike in the god forsaken heat of the outer banks of north carolina with the most fit family on the planet for over two hundred miles in five days and put on 3+ pounds!!!
My cousing Kevin is not allowed to ride his bike with any of us unless he rides for at least an hour before joining us.
My cousin-in-law, Kevin's wife Ginny, laments her lack of fitness as she rapidly develops an ability to ride a skim board.
My sister-in-law Debbie thanks me for 'pulling' her on a ride only to have to wait for me in a convenience store while I bring my core temperature to something resembling normal.
Then there is my little brother who turned 40 this year....I can still beat his butt!
We had a good time and now that I am not subscribing to a 4:00 gin and tonic I am sure I will get back to my normal weight.
I hope that everyone is doing well and surviving the dog days of summer.

    Casey

    Hi Everyone,
Raye, just a question, did your docs discuss the latissimus dorsi (sp?) flap procedure with you? I think that is what I will have as my skin is damaged from the radiation.
Casey- I am tired just reading your posts! Good for you, that actually sounds like a lot of fun. I am still indulging in the red wine and it definitely impedes the weight loss progress. Also just got back from two weeks beachfront in Long Beach Island. Definitely drank too much wine on vacation, came home with an extra two pounds. Oh well, not giving it up!

    Hi All,

It's my first day on the job, so I'll be brief. I took two weeks off between jobs and have put on about 5 pounds. It didn't help that all the students and chef instructors were making my favorite foods and desserts those last few days on the job. (No, I am not a chef. I worked in student services.) I'll see my onc on Monday, and he will be so smug and all "See, I told you you'd gain weight on Tamoxifen" that I just have to drop a few pounds before I go in. I have started lifting weights again, and I still love it. I'm also swimming 3-4 days a week, so I feel great. Just need to recover from vacation and the culinary school!

Raye, about the smoking. Have you tried nicotine gum or lozenges? I have friends who have successfully used both. You'll still get your nic, but without all those carcinogens!

It's funny... I've been thinking lately that if I'd known I'd have cancer at age 41, I would have taken WAY worse care of myself all these years! I feel like I should sue Whole Foods.

Carol and Casey, great to hear from you. Carol, check in with the December girls. We are trying to get together over MLK weekend!

    Hi ladies:

I was on vacation the last week of July. I had a terrible diet while I was away and am trying to get back on track. I've only exercised about 3 days since returning two weeks ago. My 6 yr old is starting school next week so I've taken another week "off". I'm hoping to get back on the exercise routine next week...but I am having my chemo port removed (YAHOO!!!) on Tuesday and can't swim for a week. I'll have to go to the gym and walk on the treadmill or something. It's way to hot here in SW FL to exercise outside.

Good to hear from you guys.

    Hello Ladies,

    I've missed you all!

Casey, boy you put me to shame! You are in tremendous shape.

Carol - Yes, That is what I wanted to do, not the TRAM. One PS did say he would do it, but I would be happier with TRAM results boob wise. Also with the LAT flaps, he would have to stretch the skin from the back with tissue expanders and then put implants in, as my back apparently does not have enough fat to create a boob (I beg to differ and they are using the muscle too, so, hmmm). ahhh, two week vacation on the beach! good for you!

Mary - best of luck to you with your new job! I hope you love it. Thanks for the tip on the smoking cessation tools. Actually, I now only smoke a cig every once in a great while, not an every day thing. BUT, when I am out I am definitely going to use the gum, because that is when I am most tempted.

Cathy - congrats on the port removal! My port didn't both me physically, but psychologically it was sooo good to get it out of there!

Take care all! I am having my proph mast on Weds of next week, so will be out of commission for a few days. Have a wonderful remainder of the summer.

Ms.S, let us know how that vacation was!

PS - note no comment on working out, as I have nothing to add! I will start up again after surgery recovery. I haven't gained any weight, which is good, but I note a definite loss of muscle tone.

    Hi All!

The new job is great! I felt like crying when I left there today. I actually worked there (Dept. of Ed.) for three days just as I was getting my cancer diagnosis, so everybody knows why I left and have been so sweet now that I am back. Plus I am really into high school redesign, which is my job now! Yeah!

Raye- good luck with your surgery. Guess you've been through it once, so you know what to expect. What is TRAM?

Glad everybody had some relaxation time this summer! (But Casey, it sounds like your "vacation" was more work than play!)

Mary - You are too funny. I used to say the same thing about getting pregnant - if I had known how hard it would be for me, I would have had a lot more sex!
Raye, My PS also said that they take muscle and skin with the lat flap but they use an implant underneath. He said he uses the flap to help regenerate the radiated skin but they are not trying to create a new boob from it. He said that as soon as they cut to take the expander out - the radiated skin really retracts. The only thing he was worried about was that the radiation field included some of that lat area. He said that if the vessels are compromised he would then have to do the TRAM. I wouldn't mind doing it if I had too - the tummy tuck would be a bonus. Good luck with the surgery next week, let us know how you make out. I will keep you in my prayers that it is uneventful. My vacation was great but definitely too much wine!
Cathy, My Onc. told me I should leave my port in for three years! I was really upset with her for telling me that - felt that she was just putting a date on recurrence. I had it taken out in June. Congrats on getting your out.

    Carol,

Yes, that is exactly what my 2nd opnion ps told me, he would do the lat flap with the expander, and then implant, but there MAY be damage to the lat area due to rads they give you in the back - so he would rather do a TRAM, ugh. Scary, huge surgery.

Too much wine? ah, it was your vacation, just take it easy now (if you want, of course ). You know, I felt the same way when my onc said that "I could" leave the port in for years and I asked her "why, because you think it will come back?" She said no, just a convenience, hmmm. I had mine taken out a month after chemo was done.

Mary, TRAM is the acronym for transrectus abdominal muscle, which they remove along with the fatty tissue of the belly and move to the breast area to create a breast or breasts.

    Have a wonderful week all.

I promise I will not have more than one wine tonight, I promise I won't eat a bag of Cheetos, I promise.........
