For those of you who have had genetic testing, did your insurance cover the cost? My doctor recommends it, but we are waiting to see if insurance will cover all or at least a portion of the cost.
Thank you

I think it depends on the insurance company, and it depends on whether it is deemed 'medically necessary'. I opted not to have testing (after counseling because my risk was low and it was not deemed medically necessary. The genetic defect in question was very rare (not BRCA). My insurance paid for about 1/4 of my counseling bill.

I paid $100 for the genetic counseling appt - just had my blood drawn last Tuesday for the BRCA testing - my insurance co. says they are footing the entire bill - so I am praying as they said it is around $3400 for the first one in the family who tests (me). Hope this helps! Cindie

My insurance company will cover the test, but not the counselling, which is considered "educational" and therefor not covered.

Because I had already had bc, my insurance paid for it. If you test positive, I belive Myriad labs gives a discounted rate to family members who want to be test after.

My mother's paid for it 6 yrs ago. at first when the counselor called to pre-approve the test the ins said that it was not covered, but after the counselor started talking about the family members that had various cancers (bladder, prostrate, ovarian) the insurance changed their position and covered 100%. If they say no, keep pressing.

Myriad Labs called me today and said my insurance co. said they would cover 90% and I would owe $312 which is the remaining 10%. I told them I had a $1000 per year maximum out of pocket and since I just had PBM/Recon, I had already reached that and she said ok, you don't owe anything and we will start your test today - should have results in 10 days. So, there you go! Sometimes you just have to give them more info than they have - I could have just paid the $312 but I knew I had already paid out $1100 on the PBM/Recon and had reached my max - so be sure and check it all out if they say you owe something towards the test.

Thank you all for your help. I had DCIS 4 years ago and then a reoccurrence in the lymph nodes on the same side last year. My mother died from cancer and 3 of her sisters have had some form of cancer. We have Priority Health insurance and so far they've been good about covering tests, so I hoping this one will be coverd as well.
    Again...thank you for your help!

I am not sure if you had your mammo yet but there is a program that does pay for the mammo and following care in some cases.  The program is federally funded and state distributed so you will need to contact your state office of Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Fund.  There are requirements to be approved, no insurance or underinsured, 50 or over but I am 46 and they approved me, you need to make at or under the 200% of the poverty income rate.  Even if you did get your mammo and need follow up care for some reason, try to locate them in you state.  Good Luck

You could call your local hospital and ask to speak to a nurse in the oncology department, or call your local cancer society, or a local oncology office. Any of them should be able to direct you to your local free or discounted services. In my area the program is called "Every Woman Matters."

Marie, Call your insurance company and ask them.  There are so many companies with so many different types of policies the only way for you to know is to call on your own policy.
