Can anyone please tell me the recovery time for a masectomy.
How long is hospital stay and how long after surgery does it take before you are up and about.
Thank you.
Single breast..

Also has anyone read the theory about surgery decision based on cylce.
I have read it is much better in the first half of cycle.

I am 4 weeks out from a bilateral with tissue expanders put in. I was supposed to be in the hospital 2 days but stayed for 4 due to pain management etc... I switched to Tylenol at about day 9 because I hated the feeling of the pain meds. It took a couple weeks until I felt fairly normal, but now I feel great. I was in the middle of my cycle, unfortunately, I didn't really have a choice for surgery date. Are you having an expander put in? That can make recovery a bit more difficult due to it being placed under the muscles. Good luck. It's not as bad as you think.

My breast surgeon kept telling me that her part of the surgery was the easy part (unilateral mastectomy). I also had immediate recon w/expander. I stayed over night and never took any narcotics after they pulled my pain pump before going home. I used Tylenol for the 2+ hr ride home and wasn't uncomfortable....not moving fast but not uncomfortable either. I was up and moving around that day and the next day, I was home alone. I was able to take care of myself and get food, etc. I spent a lot of time sleeping but got up the following day, used the handheld shower so that I could feel clean and 'got dressed' in sweats. I slept as much as I could and roamed around the house the rest of the time. I could have gone back to work in 3 weeks but was on 'break' from my job so didn't need to.

I also read about timing your surgery with your cycle and have subscribed to it. I say err on the side of caution and if you can, schedule your surgery accordingly. I actually canceled my lymph node dissection because my period started and I wasn't taking any chances. My BS INSISTED that 'the theory' didn't apply to lymph node surgery but I wasn't as sure as she was and it IS MY BODY, not hers! She wasn't happy with me but I was certain I had made the right decision and knew I couldn't live with myself if anything happened 'down the road' and I hadn't done everything I could to prevent it. Best wishes!

Best wishes to you. I'm 45, had dble mast w/ expanders 6 wks. ago. Stayed overnight, went home around noon. Already had pain meds and muscle relaxers (don't use child-proof lids and don't forget the laxatives). Went back to work PT just under 2 wks.

Everyone is different, listen to what your body tells you. You're the best judge of it.

Mikim, I read quite a bit about the timing of surgery with regard to menstral cycles and I wanted to have my mastectomy (with SNB) done after my period. However, my medical advisors were urging me to have surgery as soon as possible because they were not sure if my DCIS had become invasive or not. I felt it was necessary to have it done quickly rather than wait until the right time. So I had it on about day 4 of my cycle - I would have preferred to wait a bit longer but there were no vacancies on the surgical list then. Anyway, it all went well. I had minimal pain. Had a drip for the first 36 hours with patient administered pain relief but I didn't need it after the first 15 hours or so. I had one drain from the sentinel node which was removed on day 3. I had my wound manually drained a couple of times after that and have had lymphatic massage regularly during the 3 months since surgery to keep my lymph problems had bay. Overall, it's been ok with a few ups and downs. Hope it all goes as well as possible for you.

mine started right before lol it figures. The nurses all told me I would be surprised at how often women 'get it' right before surgery!! ugh!

I'm glad most people on here did really well. I did not. I was in for 4 days, and probably should have stayed another. Take stool softeners!! before and after! You will get constipated.. not IF.. but WHEN LMBO I had 38 lymph nodes taken out, plus of course the sentinel, I am still in pain. 3 weeks today, I am still very low functioning and it's realy starting to depress me to no end. We all have our own path, I have no advice either lol other than the drains suck... and if I had known now, what I didn't know then, I would NOT have had ANY reconstruction. just my story.

Everyone is different GMG but I wish you were having a better time. It must be very depressing. You have had to cope with 2 types of surgery at once and the operation is much longer. No wonder you feel so bad.
The wierd thing is with my cycle is that up until my mastectomy my periods came every 28 days but since surgery I've only had 2 in under 4 months! Must have really upset my hormone balance!

Hi Mikim! I had a bilateral mastectomy with expanders placed and plastic surgeon used Allograft. I am 51 (but act like a 30 year old). I am in excellent health. I had my surgery 3 days ago, on Nov 12th at noon. I had worn a scopolamine patch behind my right ear the night before surgery to help with nausea and throwing up and dizzy spells. I was under anesthesia for about 7 hours. I woke up feeling okay, but when I tried to take oral pain meds, I would throw up. I tried a cracker, Jello and sips of water and still would throw up, but not a bad type of throwing up. I also burped a lot. I was given morphine for pain and Zofran for nausea by IV all night. Then next morning at the hospital, I was given Zofran (anti-nausea) by IV and waited for about half an hour and took oral pain meds, oxycodone. I had high BP for awhile because of the pain I was in. You rate pain on a 1-10 scale and I was always a 5 to 7 level. The oral pain meds worked with me not having to throw up by taking Zofran IV and then later was switched from IV Zofran to oral dissolving under the tongue Zofran. I took the Zofran a half hour before each oral medication to keep it down. I was given medications to buy before surgery: Oxycodone 1-2 pills every 4 hours for pain, and Ibuprofen 600 mg every 6 hours for pain and inflammation, Colace twice a day for stool softener, Keflex 4 times a day as an antibiotic, my amlodopine 1 a day for high BP, Bactroban for the drain sites; I have 4 drains, Tylenol 1 pill added to the oxycodone to add a little more umph to my pain management, and Flexeril for muscle spasm. Never to take oxycodone with Flexeril at the same time because it could put you out and you would have a hard time waking up. I had surgery around noon on the 12th and then the next evening, went home. I had stress going home because schools were closed and roads were icy in areas. I made it home. the first time I had to go pee, my husband had to pull my PJs down and pull them up afterward. I was able to wipe myself though. I was uncomfortable at home. I stood, looking at my recliner, and thought how the heck am I going to get out of this contraption. I laid on the couch. The third day it gets easier all the way around, pain management is better and moving around more is better. I still walk a bit like I am an invalid. I had a hard time flushing the toilet, turning on the faucet to wash hands, etc. Basically anything that you have to use your muscles. I am so sorry you have to go through all this.
