Just complaining about Dr. and Insurance

I am very frustrated! It took me over 6 months to find an endocrinologist that would take my insurance. I finally find one who is across the bay at a less then desirable clinic. I wait 2 months for the appointment. I go there and the woman looks at my thyroid and tells me she does not think its cancerous but lets have some blood work done and have a follow up appointment in a month. So I set my follow up for the end of July. She tells me as Im leaving that she reccommends I have the thyroid removed. Im ok with this because at this point I look like a freak, its so enlarged. My shirts are tight around my neck and its just really ugly. So I tell her I'd like to be refered to a surgeon. She tells me "lets get the blood work done and I'll give you the referral at the next appointment." So I go away and have the blood work done which comes back normal. About one week before the appointment my car dies. Its going to cost more money to fix it then I have. So I don't get the car fixed. Its the day of my appointment. I have to take a train and three different busses to get to this appointment. I start off at 11:30 am, my appointment is not until 2:30. At around 2:15 pm I know Im going to be about 10 min. late. So I call the office and talk to her assistant. The assistant tells me not to worry the doctor is running late anyway. I get into the dr. office at 2:35. The receptionist tells me that the doctor is refusing to see me today because I am 5 minutes late. I tell her Im very sorry that Im late, her assistant told me she was running late. The receptionist just shrugs and tells me that she says she is not going to see me today. I explain to the receptionist what I had gone through to get to the appointment and could she please tell her it would be so nice, super nice if she could just write me the referral. The receptionist tells me to have a seat and she'll go ask. I sit in the waiting room for over 30 minutes when Im called to the desk. The receptionist tells me that the Dr. will not write the referal for me because I was 5 minutes late to the appointment. I had my BF with me and he said "how about we write the note and she signs it." The receptionist shakes her head no then tells me she can reschedule me for the end of October. I said at this point never mind and I would like my medical records so that I can go somewhere else. The receptionist disappears again for a couple of minutes and tells me that no I can not have my medical records because I was 5 minutes late. I lost my mind at this point. After yelling for a few minutes the Dr. says she will fax my records over to my primary physician. I leave, done with this horriable Dr. I call my primary physician who then tells me she has not received anything from this dr. but that she did get a phone call. She says that she will write the referral for me to see the surgeon. She being my Primary. Well today I get a certified letter in the mail informing me that I "can no longer be a patient" at her f-ing wonderful office. Oh boo hoo. Like I was going to go back to her after that horriable treatment. The note also states that if I want to pay her $15 she will fax me my medical records! Oh I can't believe how awful doctors can be. I changed jobs last Sept. and we were give United Health care. This is the worst health care I have ever had. It is impossiable to find a doctor to take the insurance.
Thanks for letting me have my rant! Just can't believe the nerve of the woman. Im going to file a complaint with the state against her.

Gwen, how frustrating for you. How many times have we had to wait for doctors, and for her to not see you because you were 5 minutes late and to not write the referral. I think I would also complain to the insurance company about her. Hope you get the referral soon.

Any doctor who refuses to see a patient who is five minutes late is not a doctor who has your well being at heart. You did right by "firing" her on the spot.
Having promised you a referral to a surgeon, and then not even coming through on that after she, the doctor advised your thyroid's removal, well you have to wonder about her competency. Anger in such a situation is normal, and an apology on her part would have been wonderful. Her sending you a letter saying you may not be in her practice shows her fear: but, she "laid hands" on you at least once, so she by standard, must supply you with the names of three or so doctors who might provide you with care, and she must agree to see you for any emergency for the next 30 days after receipt of the termination letter.
How grim American medicine is becoming! And thank goodness for your primary doctor who can send over a signed release of records to this endocrinologist and get your records minus any $15 dollar fee to you (you, privately would have to pay).
BTW, if you are considering surgery, a surgical endocrinologist specialist is advised, although general surgeons with enough thyroidectomies under their belt are also typically well versed in this surgery.
Since your blood tests were normal, you'll need imaging tests, which your primary doctor may order. A goiter, or enlargement, may not need surgery, but other means to result in it's shrinkage. Do watch for swallowing difficulties, especially if it is enlarging quickly.
Consider reporting this endocrinologist to your local medical board. They need to know about these types of going ons. Write up what happened, give dates and times, include her termination letter, and send it certified. Indirectly, they should turn up the heat a little on her, asking for an explanation, and maybe even helping you to be apologized to.
So sorry for your troubles,

Well said, Tender!
That "doctor" is a money grubbing quack! Obscene. -
Thank you for your adice Tender, will do on the reporting to local medical board.
Thanks for the support Iodine and Margaret. I just could not believe that I was being denied my medical records for being 5 minutes late. She was disgusting to put it lightly. -
gwenn If that happened to me, I would be taken away in handcuffs- b/c I probably would've demanded to see the Dr, just so I could smack some sense into her.
WHAT NERVE!?!
I absolutely agree with the other ladies that you should report this incident to your insurance company as well as the local medical board. -
Gwenn,
I recently had a similar experience with my rheumotologist. I currently have mets and was dx with rheumotoid arthritis and lupus. The RA or lupus was zapping all my energy about a month or so ago. I went to her to see if we could change meds or something. First I called the office to leave a message, after day two of waiting on a call back I call in again. They put me in an appt of a patient that cancelled. I struggled to find a ride there as I could not drive in my current state, was too exhausted to even eat. When I got there she wanted to switch my anti depressant to cymbalta. I refused to switch because I tried this med before, it made me incredibly mean. The doctor looked at me and said "what do you want to be mean or tired?" No compassion or thought for what all I might be going through. By the time I left I had no help and felt she figured the cancer would kill me off so why should she bother treating me. My onc wrote me a rx for a small tapered dose of steriods to get me back on my feet and I was doing fine. As soon as I was feeling better I called the office to get a copy of my medical records. After 3 days of waiting for a callback and lots of argueing to get these records I was told it would cost $10 for the records. I figure I don't want to have to redo the $1,100 in bloodwork she just ordered so I agreed to the $10. This was a Monday. I told them I would personally pick the records up in a office close to my home on Thursday. I show up and the doctors assistant looks at me and said "oh yeah, I knew I forgot to bring something with me today, they are on my desk in our other office" I strongly and loudly suggested she get on the phone ASAP and have them faxed over. She got nasty and said "I have lots of important things going on and I didn't remember them", so in the middle of the waiting room with lots of patients I replied loud enough and with enough frustration for everyone to hear "well I may only be a patient, but my time is important also and I have other things in my life than to wait 2 to 5 days for a doctor or her office to call me back! My time is also important as this doctor is not the only thing going on in my life and my time does not rotate around the ground she walks on!" Needles to say my records showed up and she rudely said "this will cost you $10". I went to pay her cash but when I realized they had no recepts I put my cash away and wrote a check to the doctors office. I let her know how terrible and rude I thought this doctor was and to be sure to cancel any other appts I had as I would not return to this doctor even if my life depended on it! The office manager tried to call a few days later to see if she could mend the situation and I never bothered to return the call.
I know have a wonderful rheumotologist who takes me seriously and understands I am not dying and a patient that needs care like anyone else. I hate doctors who think they are above God himself!

One tip - instead of asking for your records for you, ask for them for a second opinion or your pcp. You can generally get them free for those reasons.
