OMG!!! RavDeb, I'm laughing about the shampoo during chemo. That has GOT to be the topper. Does she have a brain???
Karen -
I guess I don't think the shampoo was all that tacky. I still used baby shampoo on my scalp when I was bald. Maybe she thought it would be a good gentle shampoo for your scalp during chemo. My favorite is the paper napkins...still shaking my head on that one!

One year my husband gave me mud flaps for my TransAm. I was so angry. I left them in the trunk. That car was stolen and I found it myself a year later. The thief had put the mud flaps on the car. My husband said, "The mud flaps are on the car." I said, "Don't mention those stupid mud flaps." What was he thinking?

Hilarious! I think the ant farm tops the list. My husband LIKES gift that do things, but has figured out that that doesn't work for me - perfume or jewelry are better. I think he takes our daughter shopping with him now. I wonder what he really thinks of my gifts - I usually get him clothes - I don't know what tools he "needs"!
One year at Christmas, my MIL gave my 2 SIL and I each one out of a package of three bath cubes! That year my son got a girls watch that didn't work - she informed us that she had a lot of stuff from her basement to get rid of, so she gave them to us as Christmas gifts! We don't worry about what we get her anymore. -
Some people are just plain cheap! One summer I tutored my brother and his good friend (a millionaire's son). His mother said she would pay me the "going rate". At the end of the summer she asked my mom if "$40 would be enough." Then she wanted to know if I'd be willing to housesit for her. Mom promptly told her that I'd be too busy planning my wedding. What a cheapskate! And her mother-in-law owned most of Captiva Island.

Bumping this to the top.

I had a really guilty moment a few hours ago about this very thread. I was dusting and discovered a wonderful gift h2b gave me a few years ago.
He asked me what I wanted one Christmas and I told him "world peace." Christmas morning, I opened a box to find the most beautiful musical snow globe I'd ever seen; it is heart shaped with two doves inside; when you wind it up, it plays "Let There be Peace on Earth." OMG!! I'm tearing up now just thinking about it -
LOL
glad he's your former husband LOL
my dh bought himself an ant farm and they got out and made a nest in my potted palm tree!!! -
Now i feel bad because over 32 years we've been married, my DH has gotten me some awesome gifts,a Heart Shaped Trivet for Valentine's Day, Flowers delivered each month for a year, a leather coat I had admired in the store, many beautiful pieces of jewelry, to name a few.

Moving this to the top.

This is too funny. bumping.
I had some gifts from an x BF and husband that OMG... you should have seen my face upon opening the darn gift... one gave me a slow cooker... it's still brand new (10 years later and I tried to get ride of it on a garage sale)! LOL
And the other gave me a singing monkey for my BD... it has been in the garbage for years now! And I am pretty sure I have many more, just can't remember right now!

Lilia, I've been meaning to ask you: what on earth are those two characters doing in your avatar?!?
-
Felicia: how's my man Malcolm?
And answering your question, one of them dropped a contact lens on the floor! Can you help them find it? And which one dropped it?
-
Malcolm is fine. Off to (gulp) 10th grade this year!! Can hardly believe it...
How's Miss Jade doing?

My husband was always terrible at buying me gifts. He'd try his best, so I hid my disappointment, but I often though, "Does this man even know me???"
Then last winter, he called and said he and the dog had a surprise for me. I couldn't imagine what it was, but didn't get my hopes up very high.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I got home to a brand new laptop! He even got a carrying case for it. I am still stunned everytime I use it!

Felicia, that long-handled massager isn't just for backs, ya know.
I'm the one who asks for practical gifts and it drives my girlfriends crazy...i asked for a new vacuum cleaner once for my birthday and one friend still talks about it 15 years later. sheesh.
My husband is actually great at finding good gifts (and he buys me at least one little "surprise" a day...but he screws up every time he tries to compliment me. The other day I was getting ready to go out and was still in my bra & panties. He told me "You look nice (pause)...well, your face does anyway." He tried to take it back, but I wouldn't let him. this will be future ammo for our next argument.

Well, a friend got an iguana for a wedding present.

One Christmas, my DH's father & his wife gave me ... a ship's wheel. Yes, like a 20 in. diameter, spoked wooden yo-ho-ho ship's wheel. And NO, there wasn't a cute little 21 ft. sailboat "to be delivered later." FIL's wife's son-in-law (my 'counterpart' if you will in the family structure) got a all-the-stuff-model digital camcorder. BTW, FIL was wealthy. Now he's dead. His wife & her kids/grandkids walked away with the majority of the estate. And has the nerve to solicit US for contributions to her favorite charities.
On the other hand, DH & I needed to get a small chainsaw and by coincidence went shopping for it the day before Mother's Day. DH is a good man but he's a bit ... uncoordinated, so I had made it clear that I would be operating the thing. The guy at the hardware store thought it kind of funny that I was the one to pick it up to see 'how it feels' so we told him it was my Mother's Day present. Think about it... it takes a VERY SECURE man to give his wife a chainsaw for Mother's Day.

okay- I can only tell this b/c I know my friends would never come to this site. My best friend is dating a guy that is fantastic, although somewhat socially inept. They were attending a wedding that he invited her as his guest- for a friend of his from out of town. When my friend asked him what he was giving as a gift he said... ready for this...
a smoking cessation cd.
not to worry, she slipped a check in the card... hahahahahah

The worse gift I ever got was from one of my first boyfriends (I was young and in love back in my mid-20's). It was our first Christmas together and I bought him a beautiful expensive ski sweater (we loved in the cold North country and we both liked to ski). After he opened his gift, he said, "I didn't get you a gift - but let me give you some money so you can buy yourself something." It FINALLY hit me hard - the guy was not only cheap (which my dad kept saying) but he was totally unromantic and selfish. Needless to say I broke up with him shortly afterwards. I learned an important lesson then - it isn't the amount spent on the gift, or the gift itself that mattered to me - it's the THOUGHT put into it! My DH has given me lovely gifts all the years we're married, but usually I'm never surprised because he's terrible at keeping a secret!
