For those of you who are trying to low carb it and miss your relax time on the patio with a fruity martini, I found a nice, refreshing alternative. I can't do Splenda so I use Equal (I drink diet coke so thought I could handle that better). You need a Cuban sugar cane rum called cachaca (a common brand is Pitu) and it really makes a difference in taste ... don't use bacardi or anything else). Ends up with about 4 carbs.

LOW CARB CAIPIRINHA:

Mix 3 packets of Equal with 2 tablespoons of water from the tap (NOT HOT.. causes a taste change in the Equal). Stir to dissolve.

Cut up half a lime into little cubes and put it into a cocktail shaker. Add 1/2 a jigger of the sugar water and muddle for a minute to release the oils in the lime. Add another 1/2 jigger of the sugar water, 1 1/2 jigger of cachaca rum and cracked ice. Shake like crazy for 30 seconds. Pour into a high ball glass and enjoy.

It tastes like a refreshing, limeade and you cut out about 20 carbs. It is also WONDERFUL with real sugar water and so worth the spurge somedays but this is a good substitute.

Enjoy, Karen

I have been trying to make a sour mix with splenda to add to cocktails. As a fromer bartender, sour mix is such a big part of soo many drinks.

There is a "sneaky hint" on line. I wanted a sour apple martini but wanted to cut a few carbs. The hint was to use Crystal Light Lemonade instead of sweet and sour. Tried it and it worked! It wasn't exact but it was very good. I'm one that will admit I love the fruity cocktails, especially with the simple syrups or sweet and sour. {{SIGH}} Just one more thing the "tweak".

There is also a low carb recipe for sweet and sour on line. It has lemon juice, lime juice, water and 1/4 cup of liquid artificial sweetener. You might search for it.

If you come up with anything, let me know. We'll toast each other. Karen

"On The Border" makes a Sugar Free-Lo Carb Margarita mix. It is kinda hard to find. 4g of carbs for a 4 oz serving. I have only been able to find the 1.75L size (big) and you can use it for sours, dacquiris etc...

Oh Bummer. A LARGE bottle. Just the challenge I need to make more drinks Do you know if it is made with Splenda? I haven't had much luck enjoying those so have been sticking to Equal (aspartame) in cold water.

Thanks for the tip. Cheers. Karen
