The truth about wigs

OK, ladies:
How unbearable is a long wig? I have long hair now and I know it will be short for a long time once it starts growing back. I am not ready to let go of my long hair, so I bought a long wig in prep for the 'fall-out'. Does anyone have experience - negative or positive - with longer wigs?

i bought a long "real" hair wig just like my own hair but i ended up at the end getting a shorter layered one in synthetic hair much much less expensive and easier to take care of
the longer wig to me was very hot in the summer
i also had a hat wig- its a half of wig that attached by velcro to all these hats i wore that was more comfy -
The truth is wigs are hot! I bought a bunch of them in different lengths but ended up wearing the shorter one because it was cooler. The hat w/hair is an awesome find as well.
Basically, my long wigs just annoyed the hell out of me.
Karen -
I bought a long wig and regretted it - I wore it exactly 3 times. It was very hot and itchy. I wish I had not spent the money and had just gotten a free one from the American Cancer Society.
Alicia -
Me, too!! I spent $1800, yes $1800 on a real hair wig which is long. It was hot, itchy, HEAVY and I wore it maybe 3 times. I wore a short synthetic one when I was out and I wore a hat at home. Luckily, I was bald in the wintertime, I can't imagine how hot it would have been in the summer. I live in Texas.....

This is great perspective! Thanks, Ladies.

One more question: Don't laugh!
But do the metal clips in the wigs go off when you go through a metal detector at the airport? Because I would be mortified if I had to rip off my wig in the middle of the airport! -
I too had long hair before I shaved it off during chemo. Bought a long "real hair" wig and got it cut to about shoulder length. I wore mine almost every day since I was still working during chemo and it was during winter and spring, so, I didn't find it hot. I do find it to be a bit hot now that it's summer.
My wig doesn't have any metal clips, so, can't help you there.
Jo -
heya sdstarfish! that's such a cute name
i bought a shoulder length wig in 2003 when i was first diagnosed and was told to buy a wig for my chemo. i had hair to my waist at the time and i knew what was coming. anyway, i wore it maybe 3 times too.
2006, the cancer came back (it's now in remission again) and this time i didn't even bother to buy a wig anymore 'coz i know my track record of being too lazy to put on a wig. i'm more of a hat type of chick, i guess.
sorry, but i don't know about the metal clip thing in the wig(?) um, did u buy extensions or something that you're supposed to clip onto the bottom of a hat to make it look like you have hair? hmm, maybe call your local airport just to make sure? sorry i can't be of more help.
re. the hair fall-out thing, btw, i tried to be as proactive as possible when it came time for that. since i had waist-long hair at the time and had it ALL my life, i knew it was going to be very hard for me to part w/ my hair.
i first went to the salon and got it cut right above my shoulders. that alone sent me for a shock. a week later, when too, too much was coming out by itself already, i went to a cheapo hair place this time.
i had them buzz-cut my hair, like military-short. several stores down from the hair place was Blockbuster Video, where i rented G.I. Jane. a movie i've never had the desire to see before, but i then rented because i knew i needed to watch Demi Moore shave-off her own hair -- to get the point through my head that it's only hair; IT WILL grow back.
it was very empowering. it made the sting much less painful for me. maybe it'll help you too.
if you're going to have your hair cut that short btw, bring a hat. you won't be used-to your hair being that short and it certainly helped my morale at the time too.
oh and lastly, i elected to cut my hair that short because it was actually a lot less traumatic for me than to see tons of my long hair everywhere.
you take care -
I agree. Losing short hair seems like it would be less traumatic than long hair. Although I had short hair to begin with and it was very upsetting to me. Maybe if your hair is long enough you could donate it to Locks of Love. Also, you might want to have your onc write you a note about the metal clips in your wig. I have a friend who is going through recon and she had to travel by plane. SHe was afraid the expander would set the metal detector off and she had her PS write her a note. It turs out she didn't need it after all so maybe you won't either. Good luck! Bonny
I can't help you about the wig because I didn't wear one. Just wore my baseball caps. Gave them up a couple of weeks ago even though my hair is still REALLLLLY short and I still have "the look". But that is o0k. At least I am cool. -
You girls are awesome! I feel cheered up now. Although I am still dreading the idea of seeing myself bald. I went to a wig store today and tried on shorter wigs. At first I was stubborn about it, but then I found a really cute bob style that actually looked ok on me. It comes to my chin, and a little shorter in the back.
The clips aren't like hair extensions...there is just one in my long wig, and it's a tiny brown clip like the kind that tightens a bra strap...except that it tightens the wig. This new short wig may not even have one. So there! Now I *only* have to worry about lymphadema as a result of my plane travels. -
Hi Lisa-
I just have to go on record as saying, "I LOVED my long wigs!" I had three of them, and maybe I liked them because I have had short hair for so long. I took advantage of the fact that I COULD wear a wig and not look silly, and I got a bunch of cool long shags. Just look for the ones with less hair. That is the secret. Most wigs have way too much hair, which is why they are hot. Granted, they are all hot, but it depends when and where and how long you plan on wearing them. If I would go out at night and wearing it only for three or four hours, it was bearable and fun. I tried it in the daytime for eight hours, and it got pretty uncomfortable. If you live in a big city, find a good store that lets you try a bunch on. That's the only way to know for sure. Plus, depending on your job, or your lifestyle, you can experiment with color, too. Try being a fiery redhead, a cool blonde or go for a rich brunette! You might just stumble on something you will want to stay with later!
Good luck! And just to let you know, my hair came back fast, and it's REALLY curly! Not overly curly, but I keep thinking about all of the money I spent on perms years ago!!!
Happy Wig shopping!

i went on a plane i think 1-1/2 weeks after my mastectomy. several times while on chemo (yeah, i live dangerously, ha ha!),...so far, i'm ok.
my physical therapist had me buy a Compression Gauntlet, a glove that is skin tight to squish your arm while you're flying. helps w/ the pressure.
the brands are Juzo (wrist length)
http://www.juzousa.com/
and Mediven (whole arm length)
http://www.mediusa.com/stockings/compression/lymph.shtml
and both have the fingertip portions open to breathe.
maybe you can ask your doctors if that will help you too when you fly.
i am delighted you found a wig you like that is great to hear!!! take care -
Thanks, I'll check out the arm thing. Don't wanna add lymphodema to my physical description

Hi,
I have (still think this way) very long curly hair my whole life and it was horrible to think of it going away. One of the things I learned is that everyone will tell you to try on wigs BEFORE you start to loose your hair. Let the wig person see what you look like for real. Well .with all my long curls and our state laws, he couldnt fit all my hair under the stocking cap so I couldnt try any wigs on. I was PISSED!!!! It took a lot of courage and many friends for me to go into that mall store and he sent me away and told me to come back when I was bald. I immediately ordered a pony tail wig from www.hatswithhair.com which is a pony tail and bangs that I wear with any baseball cap. Great for the gym and weekends. When my hair finally started to go I got it cut super short. It was horrible. But I went and tried on some more wigs. With every appointment more and more hair would fall out. So after 2 days I could not longer fake it at work and had to have it buzzed. Luckily that same night I found another wig place and she was very nice and patient and let me try on all sorts of wigs. I settled w/a straight one to my shoulders the same color as my hair. What I learned is the long synthetic wigs tangle at this length and even longer. I am constantly trying to get the knots out of the ends and this is shoulder length. I dont have any clips, but I do have adjustments like a bra, and these are actually a good thing. Most wigs wont fit exactly and at some point you will have grow out so my need more room. As for heat, I live in Alaska, so it hasnt been much of an issue.
Also my hairdresser told me she only needs an inch of hair before she can do extensions. And I re-watched season 6 of Sex and the City to see Samantha go through bc.
Issa -
I've always had long hair and never wanted it short. So I bought a very nice long wig (just below my shoulders) about the same length as my hair was. Even though I lost my hair in January and head was not an issue I never liked the wig. I've never worn it. I ended up wearing scarves and hats instead as they are so much more comfortable. I recently bought a short wig and I like it so much more than the long one.
If I had to do it over I would have waited until the hair was gone before I bought the wig. I think I would have made a better choice that way. The American Cancer Society in most cities has a wig closet where you can get a free wig. Maybe go there and pick one out and see if you like it before spending money on one.
Also - whatever you end up with take it to someone who knows how to cut wigs and get it cut for your face. It will make a HUGE difference. -
Hi, Issa:
I absolutely loved your honest post. It was so helpful. I have been looking for a hat/hair site, too. I am on Day 4 of my first chemo round, so there's no telling how long I'll have hair. But it helps to know that other people felt bummed about it and worked through it. Thanks again.
PS - I have been watching the Samantha episodes again, too! -
Thanks, Jan. I tried the ACS, but all the wigs looked too old for me.
I think I've made up my mind:

It is a compromise between long and short. -
Lisa - that's a really cute wig. Go for it. I hope it works out well.
-
Hi Lisa -
I think you have made a good choice. However, there is one "truth about wigs" that I don't think has been mentioned yet. You will want to take you new wig to a stylist to have the bangs trimmed and the wig thinned and shaped. It will make a world of difference to have it customized for you. You'll be much happier with it.
All the best
Lisa

Hi,
I'm glad this topic is here.
I have really long hair, too. I asked the social worker if I was crazy to be more sad over my hair than having my boob cut off. She was one odd social worker... creepy...
anyway, I'm going to cut off my hair, really short, before I start my chemo, so my 4 year old gets used to it. he has AS and things like this destroy his world... then some one somewhere can use my hair if I can't.
ah well, I'm still sad over the thought of losing my hair. -
Here's another approach, which worked for me. I kept my hair long and matched it to my new wig, which I purchased before my hair started falling out. I met with the wig stylist a couple of times to pick the color and trim. Before the major fall-out I got buzzed, left the wig shop with the wig on, and wore long hair (wig) for another year. I know, it's a long time, but I waited til summer (a month or so ago) to take the long wig off, and have had my own hair (2-3 inches long) styled. So, it just looks like I just NOW got a haircut. Nobody identified the wig stage except my friends, who knew what was going on. I bought an expensive wig, but it was worth it cause I kept in on until I could work with my hair.
I LOVED my hates with hair. I wore the regular one that you wear with a bandana or hat (I used bandanas) ALL the time last summer. So Keith Richards/Rhoda. Loved it. I also bought the swimming one and the baseball hat one for the gym.
The one thing I didn't use was an acrylic wig I bought, which was so super shiny that it didn't look like my hair.
Good luck everyone. -
I hated my (very expensive) wig. It was hot, tight and uncomfortable. Gave me worst tension headache, and i felt terribly self-concious wearing it, even though everyone said it looked fabulous.
Ended up wearing cute hats and scarves!
My advice - dont spend money on wigs unless you are REALLY worried about what would people think. I made my scarves a fashion statement with all the big earrings and make up.
Good luck whatever you decide! You will get you hair back back soon, so enjoy the freedom of 2-minute showers while you can! -

Lisa, what color is that called? I love it. -
I hope all the ladies who hated their wig will donate it to the American Cancer Society. They give them free to women who can't afford to buy one. I bought two wigs for my bald state and when hair finally grew back I donated them both to ACS. Made me feel really good to be helping a fellow bc sister!
-
Lisa, I am one of the few that DID purchase a wig with long hair a touch longer then my shoulders. I have always had long hair and I was so afraid of what people would say seeing me with a completely different look if I went with some short haired style. (Dumb thing to worry about isn't it.)
The cancer center I go to has a nice little shop in there that caters to women going through cancer trt. They have long and short wigs...any thing you need. Including scraves, hats, bras, prothesis, & you name it. The women that runs it is really awesome. She will find you the perfect wig, bra, prothesis, you name it. She makes you feel so comfortable and NOT embarrassed.
I ended up with a long wig that looked pretty much like my regular hair and I DID purchase the wig when I still have hair on my head and it was not a problem for them. She has some nice wigs and on the one I have it has two little velcor adjustment straps up in the cap. That way it can be adjusted if need be when your hair starts growing back in. I had NO problems with mine at all and I wore it for a YEAR. LOL (I know...longer then most...but I felt so stupid with short hair.) Its just recently I've been going out without a wig...and it does feel GOOD. It was getting to hot here in sunny CA for a wig. But my wig NEVER got tangled and was easy to care for. I had several people in the cancer center ask me IF I had a wig on? They really did not know. (I felt like everyone could tell..but they couldn't.)
Anyway...just wanted to let you know I am the one strange person that had no problems with long haired wig. I see your in San Diego...if you want I can PM you the phone # to this shop and you can see IF they can point you to another store like this one. This women in here Kathy is really good at what she does. She even fitted me in the best bra I've ever had in my ENTIRE life. And what's great...no one is every in this shop EXCEPT us women going through cancer treatment...so your always comfortable in there. The biggest thing I will say about a LONG wig is I did get tired of brushing it when getting in and out of my car or after sitting in my infusion chair...but thats about it. The back of it would get a little messy, but other then that it was great. Good luck to you.

In IMO the key with wigs vs scarves and hats has to do with personal choice, of course, and life situation. Like if you have children and need to consider their comfort level. And in my case, work. I am in a highly visible customer service office, so the very last thing I wanted was a bunch of comments on my hair by strangers. One guy joked, who gave you permission to cut your hair? when he saw me in my wig. I just let people think I cut it. Maybe the tangles are because its shoulder length and not longer??? I did try ACS and they didnt have anything long and most of their stuff looked old-lady. The woman was very nice, patient and it is a great resource.
Love the wig, Lisa! Looks similar to mine, but shorter. Less expensive too, good find. I read somewhere they recommended taking all your shampoos, gels, curling irons, etc and putting them in a box so you wont have to look at them. I did that and it was better. Ended up dragging a few things back out to care for the wigs, but it was ok.
BTW, I started loosing my hair on day 14 of my first round of T/C, got it cut 5 days later, and shaved a few days after that. Im now done w/chemo and have baby fine hair coming in. Got my onc to give me an Rx for pre-natal pills in hopes of making my hair grow faster. Ill keep you guys posted.
Issa -
Thanks, Chelee, that's so nice of you. But my shorter wig arrived, and I really feel cute in it
Meagan:
The color in that picture is called 'Sepia'. I ordered 'Rum Raisin', which is also pretty. Sepia has a few blondish highlights along with the brown and red ones. Rum Raisin has no blond ones. I've seen both colors in person at a wig shop, and they are gorgeous.
I love all this perspective, Ladies. And Issa - so glad that you are DONE and your hair is growing back! -
sdstarfish, I think you made a good decision to go with a short wig. Its a much easier transition when your hair starts growing back in. You can take off the wig sooner because you know people are use to seeing you with short hair. I felt weird having LONG hair all the time & then it was so short when I removed the wig. Kind of shocking. If you have a short wig people don't notice it when you go back to your natural hair. I stuck out like a SORE thumb. LOL
You made the wiser choice. I plan on keeping my hair shorter...its nice to just wash and wear. Its so easy after having long hair all those years.
The main thing is you found a wig you really like. When you said you feel really cute in it...thats a MAJOR plus. You will feel so MUCH better going out in public if your happy with your wig. Wishing you all the best.
Chelee -
I hated my wig...called it the "rat". It made my head sweat and I much preferred just using a bandana or a hat. After a while, I just went around bald. I live in a small town and everyone here knew I had cancer anyhow. So, why should I wear something hot on my head so that people don't feel uncomfortable.
Good luck with whatever decision you make.
Wendy -
The truth about wigs is they suck!!!! ha ha at least for me
The first time around with chemo my boss bought me a really expense ($2,500) real hair shoulder lenght layered wig. I maybe wore mine 5 times. I eneded up getting pattered scarves if I wore anything on my head at all. I went through it summer to fall so it was really hot and it didn't bother me to be bald (just bothered allot of people) I guess cause I was young. Hope i was a help.
