Has anyone tried using apple cider vinegar for a remedy to fatigue? I've been reading about it here:
http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html

I bought some vinegar and was reluctant to try it for fear of how bad I thought I would taste. So I read the information again, which claims apple cider vinegar can alleviate symptoms of the following: "allergies (including pet, food and environmental), sinus infections, acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout. "

I finally tried 2 tablespoons with 8 ounces of water tonight. Blech blech and blech!!! Gag me! It's awful! I'll try it mixed with tea and honey if I have any inkling by tomorrow that it might be helpful. Meanwhile, thought I'd ask the community about thoughts, experiences on this.

    Althea, as an old holistic cures lover, I have used ACV.It's great!
    I learned about it from a book called "Vermont Country Medicine" or etc, in the early 60s.

    I didnt read the whole article at the link, but does it mention ACV can cure nausea from eating "bad" food?The author never travels w/out a small bottle of it, in case something disagrees w/him.
    The other thing I wanted to add is
    "Warnings:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    #1: Apple Cider Vinegar & Dental Enamel
    Here is the original email sent to us in 2005 from Dr. Yong, a dentist from London, warning us about the dental enamel issue. Dr. Yong writes, "Warning - Taking cider vinegar by sipping it during the day may very well help cure some of these allergies, however, it will ruin the enamel on the teeth to such an extent that it may be lost entirely. As a dentist I have seen the effects of regular acid intake whether it be carbonated water or a natural acid like lemon juice - yes very cleansing to the system, but a disaster in the mouth. It leads to very costly mouth rehabilitation which can cost thousands of pounds. The first thing patients will usually notice is yellowing of the teeth and sensitivity as the enamel is lost. I am very much into holistic medicine and am training as a homeopath so understand when people wish to look for alternatives to self cure, however be aware that regular intake of vinegars and other acids will have deleterious oral effects!"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I have heard this, in my time.And have seen it suggested to sip ACV through a straw for this reason.Let me put that more strongly:I have read the ONLY WAY to take ACV is through a straw.

    Did you notice the person who suggests mixing it w/apple juice?Sounds like z great idea!

    I say try it!Go for it!This cure has been around for ages and apparantly can do no harm.
    In fact--I think I'll buy a bottle.(Being a Whole Food person, I will buy Bragg's.)

    Thanks for the idea! joan

    I use ACV for cholesterol and it is also good for bone loss. Incidentally, my summer allergies also cleared up with use. I have also read that it can avert food poisoning taken after a meal which is similar to what Joan says in her post. "They" recommend using 1 TBSP with 8 oz of water until you cultivate a taste for it. I actually look forward to it now and enjoy it 'on the rocks' after a meal. I will use a straw from now on....Thanks Joan....good info, as always! Best wishes!

    Yes, you can get them everywhere, but i've read they are very different than the real thing.
    I've taken them, and they do nada in any department, for me.(Too many additives and chemicals would be my guess.)

    Ruby--I love it "neat" too.I do love sour & bitter things.Happy you'll now use straw-even more important for we who drink it undiluted.I've been thinking about just tossing it down the hatch--mouth open wide..Probably drown myself

    The original book, from the 60s mentioned cows.The doc who wrote it noticed the cows always ate the rotten apples, they LOOKED for them.And when they ate them...(duh..can I remember?--I think it had to do with their noses no longer running.
    The cows were the basis to that doc's whole revelation and proticol.
    Honey is another Vermont cure, from this book.And he recommends mixing the two for a marvellous potion.(Not for the cows)!

    I've been using it, but still can't stand the taste of it. I've found the only way I really like it is to use it to make salad dressing. I usually mix it with olive oil, a little balsamic vinegar, garlic, lemon pepper, basil, and oregeno.

    Heehee!
    Hey, I got some ACV today and did my firxt shot.I (lol) actually toasted you!
    MMMMMM, it was good!
    I forgot at Whole Foods, so I just got a green-lable bottle of Heinz's apple cider vinegar.
    MMMMMM! I think it's delicious neat.
    And I'm thinking drinking ACV should have a VERY good result on cholesterol, too.(Did it say that in the article?)Bet it does.

    I'm kinda glad I didnt get Bragg's.It hathe vinegar mother in it, might get tricky inthe heat.(I've been drinking konbucha, and that has the mother, and must be kept cold...

    Cheers!!
    And THANKS, Althea!!

    Joan, I do buy Heinz in the GLASS bottle. I can't tolerate 'mother' either...YECH! LOVE that you had a shot!! I'll have to try that and 'right back at you'!!! I do shots of some other liquid supplements. When I was researching APV, it did say that it is good for cholesterol. CHEERS!!

    Joan and ruby, thank you for your responses. I tried the 2 tablespoons today as a shot. In addition to finding the taste objectionable, I really don't like the smell either.

    Down the hatch it went, and it felt like my throat closed up completely. For a moment I could see my headline -- Death by Apple Cider Vinegar. Fortunately, the unpleasantness was very short and I could breathe again in a few seconds. I'm going to try it daily for a week in hopes of feeling better real soon. Otherwise, I don't think I can handle it!

    Althea, good luck! I think you'll become accustomed quickly.And you must say tossing it down the hatch as a shot is the quickest way to get it overwith.
    A S I enjoy is that it makes my mouth water afterwards.I suffer from drymouth, from Femara, so this is a good SE for me

    I've been taking red yeast rice for femara-induced highish cholesterol.I've cut it in half and am hoping ACV will take over.

    I was happy to see the same book I have spoken of, on the page.And you can see this isnt just some quacky thing.

    However, it's no good if you hate it.So I'm hoping it helps and you grow to be able to take it.

    Update:

    I hasd an onc check-up last week.Got my copied labs yesterday.
    Some pretty amazing stuff in there!

    First, and au courant of this thread:My ALT and AST values have both dropped 5 and 6 points!!YIKES!!These values got higher from Femara, but have been over the norm since menopause 15 years ago.
    Three words--APPLE CIDER VINEGAR!!
    Cheers, Ruby!!

    The other amazing thing was my tumor markers.
    They started, after tx, at 36.They hung around in the high 30s for 4 years!The last numnber was actually 41 in January 07.
    My onc said I am just "naturally high"<grin>.

    So this time?

    ************29!!!*****************
    The first time in my LIFE I EVER had a 29 point CA27!!yiiiiiikes!!
    I told my onc it is from 1K of vitamin D daily!
    He stared art me in a "thinking" mode.
    I know it is.They are finding more & more that Vitamin D protects against cancer!

    Maybe the DIM I take isnt hurting either.
    But I've been taking the vitamin D since January.Coincidence?

    Anyway, I HAD to report.. these are important-to-us issues!

    That's great news Joan! Congrats on your results!

    I'm still having trouble at times with the queasy stomach, so I haven't been brave enough to try the vinegar again. I'm very hopeful to get it into my routine though. My blood pressure is getting way too high, and I'm hellbent on keeping tamoxifen as my only prescription.

    I'll have to try this because I know my cholerestol is probably high. My PCP hasn't tested me recently because she said I didn't need a new dx....haha.

    I'll just add it to my list of daily shots, i.e. wheatgrass and ACV.

    Whoa!!! I'll let you ladies know how it goes.

    Biondi, ALT and AST--I cant remember what they stand for, but they are liver tests my onc runs with the rest of the bloodwork he takes at every visit.
    As I said, mine have ben out of range since before bc.Cholesterol changes after menopause.My Primary doc was not happy about them years ago.They got worse from Femara.
    These values become higher from many things, but normally it is from fatty liver or cholesterol issues.

    At the beginning of this thread, Althea gives a really great link about ACV.It pretty much says it all..check it out!!

    Thanks, Althea.I'm sorry you're still having tummy trouble.ACV is the mildest vinegar out there.It's much sweeter than, say,balsamic vinegar.And you can read in your own link how healing it is for even food poisoning.
    I hope you get into it! I, too, am working to keep the hard-to-take Femara as my only prescription.REFUSE the lipids and cholesterol drugs.And look!ACV is helping!It's so worth it!
    Hint: Sometimes I make salad dressing out of the 2 tblspns of it.A few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt(FF), the 2 spoonfuls of ACV, a splash of olive oil.Makes a VERY nice dressing..'course you have to eat it all up.
    Good luck!

    Good luck!And no, nobody needs another prescription!Love your PCP!Mine is lenient too, always allows me time to make "lifestyle changes."

    Althea, 2 tbsp is quite a lot.  Try 1 tbsp in 8 oz of water.  I do it every day, a couple of times or more.  It helps a lot with indigestion and acid.  !!!  Sounds counterintuitive, but it works!  Even though it is acid when you take it, it leaves and alkaline ash, which helps with the ph balance.  Cancer patients are generally highly acidic.  Make sure you use only organic apple cider vinegar with the "mother"  that cloudy sediment that settles on the bottom.  Google organic apple cider vinegar for more information.  My son got me to try it.  It works!  Good luck.  A little honey might make it more palatable, but you are not taking it for taste.  But you knew that! ☺

    I have been busy and not visiting here quite so much and was delighted to be rewarded for stopping by this morning by this vinegar thread. I have a bottle of Bragg's ACV in my fridge and I am going to start drinking it again. My intro to ACV was at the recommendation of a doctor I used to go to- she was an MD but heavily incorporated alternative medicine approaches. At the time I had chronic fatigue, throat, and sinus infections after a severe case of mono (was hospitalized, had liver involvement, etc.). She had me taking ACV and honey several times a day to treat what had become a chronic infection in my tonsils.

    Since chemo I notice I seem to be having some of the same chronic fatigue symptoms again (or is it the triathlon training I am doing :)?

    As a child I used to crave vinegar and would sneak to the cupboard and drink it right out of the bottle- maybe I was on to something! Anyhow thanks for the vinegar reminder and I will give it a try. Will definitely rinse the teeth- I've had enough dental problems as it is! Cheers!

    I've also read the vermont vinegar book and thought his theories sounded reasonable.

    An older friend told me that in the 'old ' days, mothers would give ACV mixed with water to children when they first came down with sore throats. She said it's an antiseptic, and cured many illnesses before antibiotics.

    But I thought cancer patiients were suppose to stay away from anything acid. Sugar is also acid.  Is there something different about the acid in ACV?

    Althea -

    I am eternally greatful for your recommendation to the earthclinic website.  I use it for everything.  Even used the peroxide spray (1/2, 3% peroxide, 1/2 water in a fine spray bottle) to elivate a horrible cough after a cold.  Stick out your tongue and spray the back of your throat while enhaling the mist.  I am also on 2 T ACV Bragg unfiltered, mixed with 1/4 t aluminum free baking soda (the baking soda neutralizes the acid in the ACV and protects the enamel on your teeth) and 2T sea salt in 3 cups of water.  I take this daily and sip it throughout the day.Smile
