weight gain from chemo?

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced weight gain during chemo? I can't believe that I have gained a few pounds every treatment! Obviously I have been lucky to not have too much nausea but gaining weight comes with its own special emotinal toll.

My onc. blames the steroids (which I'm only on for 4 days each tx) so I asked to cut them out - he didn't recommend that and instead suggested that I cut them down to only taking the pills in the morning. This last tx, I had the worst nausea so far - starting right after chemo...it lasted on and off for the next day or so and I (finally) wasn't hungry at all. Well, now I'm back to "normal" and although I am still exercising (running 3 - 5 times per week) I am still gaining weight!! I feel really low right now. I am thinking of joining Weight Watchers. I am wondering if any of you have had this challenge? Clearly, I could eat better but things I ate before chemo are harder to stomach or harder on my sensitive mouth.

I know I could be in a LOT worse shape right now and eveyrone says 'oh don't worry, you'll lose it after your done'...easy for them to say - they are not the ones looking more and more like Uncle Fester every day!!

Know how you feel. I gained a lot of weight during chemo and it took me about a year to get it back off. You should not go on a diet. My onc said this is a bad idea. I joked with him that I had to get cancer to not be on a diet...who knew.
The evil steriods do make you gain a lot of weight and chemo just does weird things to your body too. If you are exercising you are doing the right thing. I know it is not easy to do, but try not to focus too much on your weight right now. Your body is being put through a lot right now and when you get back to normal (meaning done with treatment) your weight will come in line too. Nurses told me a lot of women gain weight during chemo. Hang in there!

I've gained, almost 20 now but I have one more treatment to go. I blame joint pain and just not being able to exercise like I wanted to during tx caused I just didn't have the strength. Sorry about our gain but I think others have too...rosebud

Mandy -- Since you're still exercising, once tx ends and you get the fruits and veggies going again and get back to your normal diet, I'll bet the pounds start coming off, even if steroid pounds are a little harder to shake.

I had my last tx June 14, and I'm beginning to eat more and more normally. It's ironic that I couldn't enjoy the high fat foods I was eating to keep up my protein and overall calorie intake during treatment, and now that my appetite is returning, I have to give them up or I'll have post-tx extra poundage.

i think chemo causes weight gain in a majority of BC patients. Besides the steroids, chemo-induced menopause changes umpteen processes in our bodies, including our metabolism of calories and the pattern of fat deposition. There is water retention as a side-effect of many of the meds we take (I have to take it on faith that my ankle bones still exist). For me, the taste disparities between what I want and what altered flavor gets through my poor chemo mouth sometimes lead to me trying again and again to find something that tastes good. This too often equals higher caloric consumption without satisfaction. Combine this with vastly reduced physical activity and I am having a hard time fitting into any of my clothes. Which is very depressing and frustrating.
The fact that you are maintaining an admirable level of activity (running several times a week is awesome) should minimize your gains, as maxgirl said. And your maintaining conditioning will make it that much easier to lose whatever manages to hop on.
    Good luck!

I am chiming in as I have also gained about 15 lbs. since dx - I blame it on a few things - definitely lack of activity - I had been going to a circuit gym like Curves 4 - 5 x/week for almost 2 years before the BC. Also due to nausea only able to eat mostly carbs - saltines, whole wheat toast, pasta . Also I had three rounds of Taxotere - famous for water retention/swelling - I finally got a lasix for this and feel better. Also if you were premenopausal before tx - the chemo can put you into instant menopause - lower metabolism rate. And of course the lovely steroids - who could ask for anything more?

Man this sucks! I thought people got skinny from chemo? I guess that was before anti-nausea meds. If I had to choose, I'd obviously choose not to be vomiting...but as I whined earlier - it's getting harder and harder to look in the mirror! I am so grateful to be running still because it reminds me that my physical body is about more than just how it looks! I feel strong and fit - and this is more important to my mental health than anything. But I do find myslef not wanting to be around people who haven't seen me since I started chemo and I am not the kind of person to avoid people/social situations!

This reminds me a lot of being pregnant...the food cravings, the weird taste buds, the weight gain, the moodiness, the nausea, the sensitivity to smells...I guess everyone is different. It's tough but the end result is so worth it - with pregnancy, you get a beautiful son or daughter, with chemo you get (hopefully) a long and healthy life!

I guess bald and fat is an acceptable price to pay but man it is tough!!! (I am 42 BTW and premenopausal - although I did get my period, almost on schedule last month - I am at 3/6 treatments) I'm set for Tamoxifen after chemo and rads and hear that brings on weight gain too...I am going to be a blimp soon! Sigh...

Mandy, Uncle Fester!?!lol You hit the nail on the head with that one! I remember asking the onc(not mine , she filled in because mine was on vacation) about weight gain , because others were having a hard time with it , and she looked at me like I was from Mars and said she never heard of such a thing. And shes been an onc for 16 years. Glad shes not my onc. I think for me , although I can smell very well , but can't taste , I find myself eating more to try to taste something. Good luck to you. Next year at this time I hope we're looking more like Mortisha than Uncle Fester! Melody

    Hi Mandy,
I'm in the same boat. I thought the one silver lining in all of this was the incredible 13 pound weight loss I experienced in the first month after diagnosis (mostly from incredible stress and being awake 20 hours/day. I got my shoulder length hair cut in a great short style to prepare for the hair loss and had a whole new look which everyone loved (including me!) I have now gained back those 13 pounds plus 10 more! I had bought my summer wardrobe while I was thin and now all of my new clothes barely fit! I hate to harp on the "small stuff" like weight gain but it's just one more thing to be depressed about. I'm thinking of Weight Watcher's too. I'm just not sure I have the will power not to eat the bowl of Mint choc. chip after dinner. I am eating tons of fruits and veggies and overall very healthy, but have the worst sweet tooth.
Keep up the running because I'm sure the benefit to your body goes way beyond the weight. Let me know if you end up trying something that works!
    Thanks,
    Amy

Amy, my downfall during tx was rootbeer floats. DH was terrified that I would waste away and kept food at my fingertips all during tx. Result: 20 pound weight gain. I lost 5 pounds during AC, then the pounds packed on during T/H. I'm still on herceptin so the weight is really hanging on. I've lost 10 pounds but am still struggling with the next 10. We've started walking in the evenings again and I think it is helping tremendously. BUT I couldn't move a muscle most of the time during tx.

I've also been watching my carbs (I am the original carboholic). There is a free website: fitday.com. It tracks all the food you eat during the day and breaks it down into calories, carbs, proteins, etc. You can also set up reports to track special items (ie sodium), track your weight, record exercise. I've been using it for years and like it enough that I'm tempted to buy the program.

I'm also still searching for a low carb cocktail. Those are also my downfall!

    Hi,
I had lost 20 pounds in the 6 months before dx, and when on tx, I would lose a few pounds the week after and then gain it back as my mouth and tummy felt better. I spoke with my onc (in Calgary, btw!) and mentioned my worry about gaining weight now that I'm on the Tamoxifen. She told me that if I even gained 5 pounds, she wanted to hear from me. My next appt is in September, and so far, I'm fluctuating +/- 3 pounds from before tx. She also said that it does come down to eating less and doing more cos we are in menopause because of the chemo and hormone therapy.

To some it sounds like we're complaining about very shallow things, but I don't think it helps us physically or mentally to be fighting bc when we're sad, frustrated, and not feeling like ourselves. And of course I've had people say to me, better to be fat and alive than . . . In my opinion, these people don't get it.

According to the very latest research, we're all going to be better off exercising moderately 6 times a week and eating at least 5 fruits and veg a day. I HATE it when the research is right!!

    Thanks for the venting . . .

Carol--there is a no-carb cocktail you can make---we have store here called Drug Emporium, but check your grocery store too---they sell a NO CARB cranberry juice. Vodka has no carbs. So, instead of a vodka tonic, treat your self to a vodka-cran cocktail.

    Enjoy!

I have gained weight too. I have been done with chemo for 3 months and I am at a stand still with my weight. I gained 24 pounds and lost 9 about 2 weeks after my last chemotherapy. I am finally starting to feel stronger so I am going to start walking more and riding my bike. I know what you mean about Uncle Fester. My face was so bloated by the last chemo that my husband called me his apple dumpling...funny for him..not so funny for me. I hated it. It's easy to get down over it. We are bald, scarred, bloated, and tired! I also don't have any summer clothes to wear. I went and bought 2 pairs of capris that don't cut off my circulation and I rotate them. But I think people are on to me..I think I need to go get more..lol

I thought chemo was going to be the quick weight loss plan! Who knew that I would develop a pot belly like a garden gnome?! I think I gained about 20 lbs however when I had my exchange surgery I got liposuction of my abdomen and flanks.

Lipo doesn't necessarily take off pounds but it does improve the profile so now I have a flat stomach and very reduced love handles. I figured I suffered enough, I didn't need to torment myself at the gym too!

UUUGGGHHH. I agree with everyone, I have completed 4 rounds of AC and one of 4 taxols so far and with no periods, and the steroids, I have only gained 4 lbs but I was already not the smallest thing, but i feel bloated, and my stomach feels hard all the time, cant wait for this to be over and see if I drop any weight, I hate not having periods.... never thought that I would say that...Good luck to all

Weighed in today and thought 'I've been careful this time and haven't overeaten so I hope I'll be okay' If "okay" means a 4lb weight gain in 3 weeks, then I'm GREAT! That puts me up to about 16 lbs so far. My onc. kind of smiled and said "usually my patients have a hard time keeping weight ON!" Yeah, well, apparently not me! He says not to worry but he's not the one who is fat and bald. I feel like I don't even want people to see me right now!! He didn't advise against Weight Watchers...maybe I will give it a try! I am still exercising and can't imagine what I'd weigh if I wasn't still running and biking!?! Man, this journey sucks!

Oh, Mandy - I am so sorry that you registered a gain despite your efforts - but mostly I'm ticked at your oncologist for being such a jerk about it! It is common for women to put on weight during chemo and nearly guarantedd if they are on much decadron (or other steroid)to speak of. The taxanes are notorious for adding water weight. Does he not treat much breast cancer?!? Wasting is a symptom of advanced, uncontolled disease - NOT chemo.
Just work on getting through this and then we'll all work on getting rid of all the side effects - including the excess adioposity!

    Mandy -

I'm another one who gained weight on chemo. I kept working out at the gym, although my stamina for cardio definitely dropped - impressive that you're keeping up such a rigorous running schedule!

I'm now 7 mos out of chemo and still have an excess 20 lbs. At least the 15 lbs of water retention are gone. However, when I fly, I still use the lasix and orthopedic stockings to prevent swelling in my legs.

I think LisaSD's earlier post ... about those of us being premenopausal being kicked into chemopause or menopause and the resulting metabolism changes is right on target. The hardest thing is that I've had an hourglass figure since I was 12 ... and since chemo, it just vanished! The chemo weight is really in my mid-section. Ugh. I'm trying to increase my cardio work-outs (weights stayed pretty strong), but it's not coming off ... Most of my cute summer dresses and other clothes don't fit ...

You're right, the most important thing is beating this cancer ... but I'd really like to get back to my pre-chemo appearance ...

You are all singing my song! My diagnosis was in October and since then I've gained about 20 pounds. Thank goodness my supportive, female onc was understanding and sympathetic. I went through chemo and then rads and I am now getting Herceptin every 3 weeks and take Femara. Will I ever lose all those pounds? I don't know...but I do know I am at a point in my life where I am exceedingly happy in spite of the very short hair surrounding the pudgy face starring back at me in the mirror. I am so glad to be through the main part of my treatment. I DO NOT like the side effects of Femara. My joints ache. Insomnia comes and goes. I am trying to get to the neighborhood pool frequently for exercise. My DH likes my size better when I am slim and trim, but I think he's so glad I am a survivor that my size isn't as important as it used to be. I bought 4 pair of the next size up capris and am very hopeful I will be back to my old size before the seasons change again! That pizza with extra cheese I ate for dinner tonight probably wasn't a good choice was it?

I just had my 1st round of AC a little over a week ago and was also given steroid pills (Dexamethasone) to follow up for a few days after. When I found that they made my heart race and caused dizziness, I called my Onc. He said that in this case, they were used purely to alleviate nauseau and to stimulate appetite, and I could stop them alltogether if I wanted (I did). Some steroids are used to shrink cells in other types of cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, but in breast cancer they are used short term only to mitigate the effects of chemo. In fact, there have been a few studies suggesting that steroids used in this way prevent the chemo from doing it's full job.
Just thought I'd pass it along.

My last taxol is tomorrow and I have gained 15 LBS throught this whole thing. My problem is I was 50 pounds Overweight to begin with! When the AC started I lost 20 LBS due to everything tasting like sawdust, but when the taxol started, the only thing that tasted "right" was the potatoes, carbs stuff. My taste buds are still messed up but at least I can eat. My dr. say don't even think about losing weight until after chemo because it's much more dangerous to be slim rather than fat. (well I guess there's a plus).

And yes compared to the good we're doing by taking the chemo, weight issues are secondary and can be resolved.

    Hi Mandy,

How are you? I remember emailing you when you were first diagnosed I think.

I am done with radiation for a month now! NO METS! Yes! I now go every 3 weeks for Herceptin, and that's it. I'm slowly getting myself together. I started going back to the gym. I gained to be exact 16 lbs. I hate it. I've been on treatments/etc since September, 9 months.

I'm only 5'1, small frame and was 108 lbs. I'm Asian so that's a good size for us. I was told to gain a little weight. I used to be a gym fanatic. I stopped. I had the lymph node surgery first, neo adjuvant chemo then mastectomy, more chemo then radiation. There was just no time, or I just didn't, exercise at all. I ate. Once I started eating, without caring what I ate, it was easy just to gain all the weight.

I wish I kept exercising, even just walking.....and I wish I didn't eat (ice cream and lots of rice). But I did very well during chemo, so....maybe it was a good thing.

It's been a week since I started going to the gym. I joined a strength class and picked up 5 lbs (since I used to lift 8, 10 and 12 lbs). I had to switch to 2 lbs and still sore. I go on the stair stepper and elliptical all at level 1/2 or 3 the most, and I'm sweating like crazy; when I used to work out at level 10-12.

Life's different. Our body is now different. We went through a lot. I guess we just have to be thankful for the little things, even if it's hard to, when all my belly and flab is showing every day, and I can't fit in to all my clothes, and had to buy new clothes..........it will take time...........I lost 1 lb in one week of really working-out (1 hour class and 1 hour stair/elliptical/abs). Aaaaaaaaaagh. But slowly. And I'm trying to enjoy myself as I get back in shape, to the ways things were.......

I started taking supplements too (L-glutamine, selenium, beta-carotene, Vit B6, B12, D, E and Calcium) since I've been eating less, I just want to make sure I continue to heal.

Take care and PM or email me at mjucutan@yahoo.com if you want.

Hang in there. It'll be over before you know it,
    Myra

PS. At least it's summer now, you can sweat with all this heat. I used to go to the sauna and jacuzzi. But we can't now because of lymphedema concerns. It would have been easy to lose water weight that way. Now I don't turn on the AC at home so I can perspire a bit, ha!

You girls are definitely singing my song. I am an athlete so I know exactly how my body should look and act. I was 40 when dx in Dec and still might have kids so I got a shot of luprin to turn off my ovaries to protect them from chemo. Water weight, oh yeah. And where? My abbs. Why couldn’t it be my elbows or even ankles? The good news is that after about 2 weeks it went away. I have continued to lift 3 times a week and do as much cardio as possible. On my last day of chemo I got another shot of luprin, oh goody! So Im working my tail off to get that weight off. It is SO hard to eat healthy when our stomachs are not happy and our mouths hurt. I just do the best I can and try and allow myself permission to eat carbs and comfort food right after my tx. And don’t allow myself to get super hungry so I make bad food decisions (like the pizza last night). I constantly tell myself, its just water, its not really fat, it will come right off. Everyone around me tried to talk me out of going to the gym and trying to control my diet. They didn’t get that if I blimped out, that would just add to all the other crap I was dealing with. Not to mention the very real fact that Im down to only a few pairs of pants. Dont want to talk about how many shirts I have left to wear because Im so a-symmetrical. Its summer, cant really wear those baggy sweatshirts and coats all the time.

Just keep exercising as much as you can and know that it is just temporary.

PS. IMO, Weight watchers is okaaayyy, but they have people eat a lot of carbs. Lots of fruit and low-fat/high-carb foods. Its summer, grill some chicken and veggies.

    Hugs,
    Issa

Wow, I see that this is an old thread but it's very helpful. I haven't started chemo yet but have already gained over 10lb. And the crazy thing is that I lost 25 pounds with the help of jenny craig in 2011-2012. And I had to buy ALL NEW CLOTHES. Looks like I'm in for the same deal. and expense. Maybe I should invest in some mumus.

Wish I had read this before I started chemo!

I purposely packed on the pounds prior to starting! I want to have DIEP flap surgery after masectomy and my belly fat will be my new boobs. Was afraid tmlose the fat I had to chemo, so I started eating.

Darn! Now I'm up 12 pounds...doctor for DIEP had said to maintain my weight.

    Jokes on me!

Just saw these recent posts - keep in mind that to gain a pound you have to eat about 3500 calories in addition to what you normally eat, and not burn it off, most people don't do that during chemo, so what you are gaining is probably fluid.  It comes off after chemo is done but it does take about 6-8 weeks for most people.

OMG, we don't have jack in the box near us but I remember those when there was one near me in boston growing up.  Their tacos are great!
