Starting Chemo in JAN 2007

Amazing article on DCA. Blows me away that this stuff can be present and not be researched in the states. More and more, I'm thinking Canada may be the place to be. My kid won't get hauled off to Iraq in 8 years... DCA may be avl., if God forbid, it's needed.

Happy Sunday ladies!
Well here I am all finished with my treatment feeling like I don't know what to do with my life. I'm so used to going to drs appointments I have al this free time now!
I'm home resting up from my big Saturday. We had our CAST For Kids (castforkids.org) event yesterday, where we take special needs kids out (we had 50 kids this year) fishing for a day, and it takes lots of organizing and work to prepare for that many kids. I have been SO busy for months on this, now I can rest! My feet are very swollen today so I decided to rest them. Even though I finished treatment Thursday, I guess I am not quite back to my old self yet 8-)
Have a good day!

Today is Sunday and I didn't sleep well at all last night. Hips hurt, shoulders hurt. I ended up having to take a percocet before I could fall asleep. 1 more to go....sure will be glad.
-
Oh, Pat - (((((BIG HUGS)))))! I so know how you feel! Many times I had to take a Vicodin to get to sleep, to be able to get around the joint and muscle pain. I hope that you're enough better by July 17th that going back isn't too hard on you. I know you're anxious to get back to work.
Thanks to everyone for their encouragement and support re: my probably having to have radiation. I've gotten over the main shock of it - finally told my dh, mom, sister-in-law, etc., so it's not just my terrible little secret anymore. I see the BS tomorrow, and on the way in there will be calling the PS to give them the news, also, so maybe by later in the week I'll know what's going on. Then I can deal with it, if I must. I've gotten through everything else, and I can do this too. I'm wondering whether I should extend my STD until I'm done with rads, if I have to do them. I'm not back to normal yet, and am afraid of the fatigue that will go along with radiation. What do you all think? Once I go back to work, it will be six weeks without pay before I'll get any STD again, if I even get it. I'm wondering whether I just need to stay off until I'm totally done, much as I don't want to do that.
Where is everybody this weekend? I know Jan's camping. Lynn is probably recovering from her party. How are you doing, Lynn? Hope you didn't get overtired, and that the party was a success. Also hope the port infection is improving - that has got to be wearing you down. At least you have some time off now to recover. Tami, it sounds like you had a very busy weekend, but what a rewarding and worthwhile thing to do. You deserve a rest, now, and keep those feet up. Tina, I've had the same thoughts as you - maybe we should just move to Canada! The DCA stuff is amazing - obviously it isn't proven yet, but there is definitely something wrong with our system when an inexpensive drug can't even be tested because we're all in the clutches of big pharmaceutical companies. Just think how much money might potentially be saved - you'd think the insurance companies would be willing to fund it! Nah........what am I thinking?
Mizsissy, what is negative painting? I'm obviously not an artist...but I can't get my mind around negative painting, even when I think about watercolor. Rebecca, thanks for being the first to point out to me that having the mastectomy and finding the nodes probably saved me a recurrence. That was the beginning of my attitude turning around again. No more whining...at least, if I can help it. How is baby Bella doing - still getting better, I hope? And how are your radiation burns and blisters - getting better, also? RobbinJaye, congrats on being done with treatment, and on quitting smoking and improving your diet. I know how much effort it must have been to stop smoking, but you'll be so glad you did it. Any luck on finding a job yet? Surely you'll be able to find something soon.
Mary, your story about McDonalds reminded me of the time the kid in the bagel shop asked me if I wanted the senior discount. I'm sure the poor guy is still shaking from my response, but maybe he won't make that mistake again. He ruined my day, for sure. Sharon, hope you are having a great long weekend at home, and I'm SO glad you finally got those retention sutures out! I've never had them, but have taken care of enough of them in my life to know I hope I never have them. You must feel so much better.
Well, we just got back from a trip to Sears. Our dishwasher, which is fairly new and wonderful, seems to be a lemon - keeps shorting out. DH is an electrical engineer, so he has been able to keep it going, but this morning, when it went out again, he confessed that he really wasn't comfortable with it anymore and was thinking we should replace it for safety's sake. (of course none of this happened until after the warranty was up) Anyway, I just LOVE appliances, for some reason. So off we went to pick out a new dishwasher, and before we had even got to dishwashers I was salivating over the new washers and dryers (no sale there) and then I showed him the very cool new refrigerator I had seen somewhere, with the french doors on the top and the ice/water in the door, and the freezer on the bottom. Very pretty, lots of good features.....and before I knew what was happening, we had bought that and a dishwasher! I just walked away while they were ringing it up, didn't want to know....but we weren't far from needing a new one anyway.
Melia, Skye, Joni, Nancy, Caya, Cindy, Robertin, Dar, and anyone I forgot...hope you're all doing ok. Hugs to everybody. -
Hi Mel, negative painting is when you create a shape by painting the area around it. For example, a pale green leaf in front of a dark green background. In watercolor, you must always paint dark over light, so the only way to paint the shape lighter than the ground is by painting the dark space around it.
Looks easier to do than it is!!!! -
Thanks, now I understand. And it does NOT look easy! I think you're an incredible artist, and hope you get back into it soon. Anyone with talent should use it, and you definitely have talent.
-
Thanx Mel. If you saw what I painted yesterday, I think you might tell me that perhaps I should think about sewing instead!!! Or typing?
-
Quote: DH is an electrical engineer, so he has been able to keep it going, but this morning, when it went out again, he confessed that he really wasn't comfortable with it anymore
Mel, my son in Freeport who works at Dow keeps reminding me he is an electrical engineer, not an electrician. To us lay people, it seems the same, but apparently it isn't. Any way, I hope you enjoy your appliances. We are home so much these days, we might as well enjoy them. -
Oh Mel I am so glad that you have bounced back (again). You have had such a wonderful attitude all along....it was only a matter of time that you would come back into yourself. Rads is not so bad.....for me the worst part is that it is so time consuming. I have been calling it my "new hobby" and joking that I had better find a new one, because this one stinks! Anyway, my burns are better this weekend than last weekend, most likely because I had such a light radiation week last week. Much of the burn has turned into a dark, rather freckly tan, and the blisters seem to have subsided for now. I have to say that the description I posted probably sounded more painful than it is....the spot of worst burn is also my spot of least sensation. Yay me! Undocumented benefit of rads after mastectomy!
Baby Bella is doing great now. She was at the vet yesterday, and now I only have to soak her paw twice a day instead of four times. she must finish her course of antibiotics, and she needed an additional medication for some obscure parasite they found. Other than that, she is bouncing around my house acting cute as can be. She is such a happy baby...I honestly think that she knows how lucky she is. If we had not taken her when we did, and not noticed her paw, she would most likely have been put down by now.
Well anyway, my MIL is here tonight, she needs some help writing a grant, so DH and I are reading it and making corrections. Hugs to all of you! -
Hello all:
Beautiful Day here today. Dan & I made a Fern garden, and it's very nice.
I hope you are over your port infection Lynn, and that your party was lots of fun.
Mel, I was disappointed that I had to have radiation after having a mastectomy, but I never had any problems at all with the radiation. The nice thing is it helps you to sleep at nite.
Sounds good about your painting MizSissy, hope you "Get Your Groove" back.
Viddie, I would take a gun in the next time to your infusion center...maybe that'll get their attention, it is just blasphemous what they are doing to you.
Rebecca, sorry to hear about your burns...try the Glaxall cream, it really worked well for me. Love your Kitty.
Jan hope you're having fun camping.
My family is all coming into town this week, as my nephew's (James & Lesa) wedding is on 07/07/07. I have my niece Holly and her beau Cliff staying here, as well as my nephew Davey, who is coming from Taiwan. He resigned his post in Taiwan, and will be teaching in Kuwait next year.
Watched the tribute to Diana today, it was super.
Caya, Sharon, Dar, hope you guys are having a great Canada Day. We're going into Calgary tonite to watch the fireworks.
The Calgary STAMPEDE starts this Friday, July 6th...goes for 10 days. I have lots of friends who now have kids and grandkids in the rodeo. I will be attending a few times, and may work down in the barns one day helping out with my girlfriend's granddaughter's barrel racing horse.
YeeHaw....Yahoo!!
Hugs to all
Joni, Chestermere, Alberta, Canada -
Oh, yea...my nephew Davey's girlfriend is from Mass. Andover....maybe Viddie, Amera or Lynn have heard of it.
She's a lovely girl, and she is also a teacher, and will be teaching next year in Kuwait, at the same school as Davey.
Hugs all!!
Joni, Chestermere, Alberta, Canada -
Yes, Happy Canada Day to all us Canucks!! Just a quiet day here, a barb-q dinner, chicken breasts marinated in some fresh spices from my garden - oregano, basil, sage, rosemary, chives, added some garlic and a little barb-q sauce - corn on the cob, spinach salad (with mandarin oranges, red onions and slivered almonds) - YUMMY- I have been taking the anti-nausea meds 3x/day as the onc.l suggested - much improvement! I will cut back to 2x /day for the next 2 or 3 days, then 1x/day.
We went to see Camelot last night. It was lovely, the actress playing Gueneviere was amazing - a beautiful lilting voice. Michael York was very good as King Arthur, but too old for the part - he's in his 60's now. I had a 2 hour nap in the afternoon so I was very up for the show. We has great seats - about 8 rows back, centre aisle.
Mizsissy - you are one talented lady. I can barely draw a straight line, although my DH is very artisitic.
Rebecca - sounds like little Bella is keeping your very busy.
Mel - chin up for the rads. And great about the new appliances - the fridge sounds really nice.
Joni - the Stampede will be alot of fun I am sure. Enjoy.
Tina, and any of the rest of you "Yanks" - come on up - we Canucks would love to have you. I remember reading about the DCA once I reread the article Mizsissy posted. It is disgusting if this is true, that the cure for cancer could be right at our fingertips for practically no cost.
The DH and I have been putting back the family room after the new dark maple wall units were finally installed - putting up pictures, rearranging "chockes" (knicknacks), etc. I will try to take some pictures this week and post them. I may have to email them to Jan or Rebecca until I figure out how to do it myself - sorry, I am tech. challenged.
Lynn - sure hope you are feeling better as well. I hope your party went well.
caya -
For those not doing rads how is your energy level? I feel like I still have a lot of fatigue and I get tired so easily. I guess thats normal?
Has anyone been gaining weight on tamoxifen? My matabolism seems to have changed completely. I lost about 10 lbs during chemo - but now I seem to be gaining even though I am eating less than usual and exercising same as before.
The camping trip was fun. The girls had a blast playing with their grandparents and I got some rest. They had about 50 campers for the fireworks. It was a good show. The turtle faces were out in full force, so I pretended to be more tired that I really was and spent some extra time in the RV with my iPod. Im glad to be home.
There are so many posts to get through after being gone just two days! I know Im a little late on some of my comments below, but I typed them as I was reading through the posts.
Viddie I am glad that you spoke up. I am sure it was the right thing to do and that you have helped a lot of other patients, but WOW that charge nurse sounds like a total b***h. You do NOT deserve that.
Mel Ugh I cant believe the news on radiation. What an unexpected blow that must have been. I would have totally lost it you thought you were done! As horrible as it is I guess the mastectomy was good because it did find the other positive nodes. Not knowing about them would not have been good in the long run. So, youll get the tx you need even though it totally stinks!!! I really hope you can get your recon soon. Big hugs. On the STDisability (I just cant type STD without giggling) if you can stay out of work it sounds like it might be a good idea. Why not? You deserve some rest.
Mizsissy thanks for sharing the update on Mena, I am so sorry that its bad news. I hope you back starts feeling better quickly.
Sharon I sent a PM to you with the chat room link. If you have any problems with it just let me know.
Caya the clinical trial for the BRCA results sounds interesting. A nice opportunity to contribute if what they are asking sounds reasonable.
Rebecca Cant wait to hear how the sleepover went. You have a lot more energy that I do.
TLC Sounds like a good weekend.
Lynn Hows that infection?
Joni the rodeo sounds like so much fun. I have always wanted to go to one. I learned to ride english and so is my daughter. But the barrel racing sounds great.
Caya Im glad you made it to Camelot. Sounds wonderful. Id love to see the pics of the new room feel free to send them to me I dont mind posting them at all.
With all the DCA talk I guess Ill keep my Canadian citizenship a bit longer. Its funny that the clinical trial gave me a Canadian treatment. I did not read that article, but I read either that or a similar one several months ago and was just so upset and enraged at how money plays into this whole thing.
We made some last minute plans to go visit my brother and sister-in-law in GA this week (Thurs-Sun). They live about 30 minutes from the beach so we are using them for a cheap and short beach vacation. My brother is in the Navy and has been out on a sub for the last few months. So it will be lots of fun to see them. -
Hi Ladies,
Viddie, I am SO glad and proud of you for standing up to those nurses (who acted rather snottily and immaturely toward you I must say). You handled it all very well.
Mel, I'm sorry too that you now need radiation. It's so hard every time one more thing gets added onto our burdens. But for me it hasn't been bad at all, I'm halfway through and only moderately tired, no burning yet just some soreness. I know you can do it. And somehow it will work out with your surgery though it may seem so difficult right now. Hang in there, girl!
Mizsissy thanks for the update on Mena, although I know it is not the news any of us wanted to hear. It's terrific that you are going to bat for her and I hoipe that you can somehow put things together so she can get the new drug. I had not heard of that one either. Major prayers for both of you!
My weekend has been fun but exhausting. I got one of those "creature" reports yesterday and ended up going to Milwaukee with dh for a field investigation, then had to talk on coasttocoastam.com last night about it for quite a while (it's on their streamlink). I posted it on my Myspace blog and have had 1100 hits just today. Sure took my mind off radiation and such. Now I really need a rest however. The blog link is http://blog.myspace.com/lindagodfrey if anyone is curious. My pic was on the C2C home page yesterday and today so I was glad I had the new wig. :-)
Now I need to go backwards and answer a couple others. Hope everyone is catching a bit of celebratory fireworks sometime this week. - Skye -
Robbin I got your note too. So cool to get snail mail from a sister! Glad to see your post, too! - Skye
-
Sherry and Shrink, I think we have all been there at the "crying in the night" stage. This really is the place to vent, know that we are all there with you. I'm not sure what the Avastin is but I and others on this group list have had Taxol.
Tina, I'm glad I had the Taxol too, but equally as glad it's over with.
Shrink, you must be a very strong person. At least this time you have the sure knowledge that the hair will come back. For me, I've had a hard time believing that until very recently. If we can be a comfort or sounding board to you and Sherry in any way please let us do that for you - Skye -
Caya, glad you had such a great time at Camelot, and you must have a fabulous spice garden!
I forgot to mention we had old friends we hadn't seen for 20 years stop by unexpectedly today, and I went topless! It felt strangely fine, and they didn't seem uncomfortable. When we went out for a bite later, though, I put my wig on and they thought that was funny. In my own home is one thing, I have not progressed to restaurant stage yet. - Skye -
Hi all,
HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!
Joni,
Viddie, I would take a gun in the next time to your infusion center...maybe that'll get their attention- LOL- that certainly would get their attention- and a great front page story for our local paper Sounds like you have a very busy and fun week coming up- enjoy!
Andover is north of Boston- a very nice town- home of Andover Academy- a very famous private school that has a notable alumni: http://www.andover.edu/about_andover/notable_alums.htm.
Rebecca,
I am glad Baby Bella is getting better. I am glad you are feeling better also.
Mel,
You sound much better today. A new dishwasher and a new refrigerator- enjoy!! Impulse buying (refrigerator) is the best kind. I would love a new refrigerator- Mine is 18 years old and the door does not close properly- we have to remember to shut it tight- I keep kicking it- but it still runs, and my dh will not replace it until it stops running---
Mizsissy,
Is your back better? What a pain!! I hope you had a nice relaxing day today.
Pat,
We have just one more!!! I hope you feel better today.
Tic,
I am glad you had a successful day yesterday. You definitely deserve to put your feet up today and rest.
VIDDIE -
Quote: The turtle faces were out in full force, so I pretended to be more tired that I really was and spent some extra time in the RV
LOL! Good for you, Jan. Re: tamox, haven't noticed weight gain. I've been on since mid April. -
Yep, Joni, Andover is the "right side of the tracks" as far as Boston suburbs are concerned.
Jan, didn't know you were a Canadian. -
Mel, I got a new french door fridge for x-mas last year...w/freezer on the bottom. I got it w/the water inside because our old one w/the water on the door showed discoloration marks from water drips. I got a white one as my appliances are white and the house is only five years old. I did have quite the time getting it in a pebbled finish, vs. smooth. I wanted pebbled to avoid seeing scratches. Oh, the main thing that made my search difficult was that I got "counter depth" so it appears built in.
-
Skye, GREAT blog! Interesting life you lead!
-
Hi,
Thanks again for everyones support on my Nurse situation. What would I do without my sisters?
Caya,
Your dinner sounds delicious. You must have fun cooking from your own private garden. I am glad you enjoyed Camelot. Those were great seats.
Jan,
Were you born in Canada? I am glad you had fun on your camping trip. I know what you mean about the turtle faces. They are everywhere- geezit is good you could escape from them in your RV.
I am not doing rads, but I am still doing taxol, so I am still tired. This too shall passthe sooner the better.
Skye,
I love your bloghouse!! You are such a talented writer. I got the goose bumps reading your story about the Manwolf. You must really enjoy your work- it sounds more like a hobby- the best kind of work!!!
Viddie -
Skye, I love your bloghouse, I especially liked the doll with the scarf on!!! You crack me up!!
-
Hi all,
Wow, we are a busy group! Mizsissy, I so admire artistic ability, of which I have none. My husband and younger daughter do, though. Mel, the rad news must have been a huge blow, but I am glad you are feeling better about it. Lynn, how is the infection? Caya, I LOVE Camelot, glad you enjoyed it. Skye, what an interesting topic you have specialized in!! Robbin, so good to hear from you. And anyone I skipped, big hugs and good thoughts ....
We had a quiet weekend. The taxol has pretty much beaten me into submission; I ache and have zero energy. My husband, at my urging, took a bike ride and ran, but he basically seemed content to relax with me. I have blood work and the oncologist on Tuesday, then the last chemo on Thursday. I cannot believe it is finally ending. I admire all of you who did all the chemo and then the radiation.
This will be a busy week at work as the bosses are out of town and I am in charge. Fortunately we are closed on Wed so I only have to be sharp for four days! We are floral wholesalers, and it should be a quiet week b/c of the holiday, but there are lots of weddings on 7/7/07 so we will have plenty of hysterical brides to pacify, I am sure.
Sweet dreams all. Prayers for Mena, and for everyone else who is struggling.
Melia -
Thank you sisters again!!!
I am so so tired. They told me to stay out of the sun. I thought they meant, keep the breast (rads site) out of the sun. Well, stupid me.... don't go hang out in the hot sun all day ya all!!!!! Expecially during the end of your treatment. It will kick your butt!!!
Well, end of treatment and time to start looking for work again. Anyone have any tips on looking for work after cancer treament? Do I still have cancer patient written all over my face?
So, when you guys chat is it in the new site with the new link, or the site in here???
Tues and Thurs right?
Can't wait to chat!!! Talk to ya soon... -
Robbin, your hair looks so thick. I wouldn't mention the cancer situation, personally. It is gone, and it has no more relevance than any other traumatic past situation. Of course, we all know we need to learn to live with the uncertainty, we all know we have been changed in a very fundamental way. But you are a normal person with normal capabilities now (actually probably above normal, but oh well). My motto in the workplace is to never let them see me sweat. I may be a mess inside, but I try to present a professional demeanor. You have been thru hell, have been very brave, have proven you can withstand incredible stress, and you deserve the best job out there. I am interested to hear what others think, but in my estimation, you go girl!!!
Melia -
Godd morning ladies
Jan- You asked about the fatigue level for those not on rads - Well, I'm not on rads, but on Herceptin, and I think I may still have some lingering s/e from the Taxotere, which was completed May 10th. I would say my energy level is still nowhere I would like it to be, I still nap 3 - 4 days/week in the afternoon for anywhere between 45 minutes - 2 hours. However I am much improved when I am awake - have more energy to go grocery shopping, cook, bake etc.
Skye - I read your blog - very cool, and you are very talented... I go topless mostly at home now, but not "out" in public.
Melia - congrats on your last chemo this week, and good luck with your flurry of flowers for 7/7/7 -
RobbinJaye - I agree with Melia about job hunting - do not mention the cancer, put your best foot forward and go get'em. BTW - your hair looks great.
Pat & Viddie - congrats to you both as well on your final chemos this week. It is a great day to celebrate. And Viddie the lunch for the nurses sounds very nice, hopefully they will respond to your lovely gesture. I agree with the other girls regarding the attitude issue of some of them when you brought up the performance of that one nurse.
Today is our work holiday here for Canada Day since July 1 fell on a Sunday. I am having 6 people here for dinner (so it will be the 4 of us and the 6 for 10 total) - But we are going to order in Middle Eastern food - pita, falafel, salads, chicken and lamb shishkebab etc. An old friend is visiting from Israel so she is coming with her cousin 2 & other couples. Going to use paper plates to make clean up easy.
Catch you all later,
caya -
Yes, Im Canadian. Born in Halifax, but we moved to the states when I was in 5th grade. I still have a lot of family in Halifax, Toronto, and Ontario.
Melia good luck with those brides. I would not have the patience for them. Congrats on the last chemo.
RobbinJaye - the chat is Tues and Thurs with the new link to the private chat room. If you don't have the link let me know and I'll send it to you. Hope you can make it to the chat this week! Good luck with the job hunt. I would not mention cancer at all - they won't know unless you tell them. I hope you find something you like. I have always hated job hunting. -
Hey gals,
Thanks for all the nice comments on my Bloghouse, it was my sanity outlet --along with you-all -- this past six months or so. I do have a lot of fun chasing those stories down, too. Just glorified reporting, really.
Mel and Tina, I have not seen the French door fridges but they sound great. Mine is going on 15 years old so I think I'm due for one soon.
Robbin...that LUSH head of hair! Thanks for sharing the pic! As for job-hunting, if there is a way you can account for your unemployed time other than cancer treatment maybe that would be the way to go but if you do end up telling about it there are positive ways to put it like saying you were successfully treated for some symptoms of cancer and are finished with that and ready to work again. It will eventually come out in health insurance paperwork if you are hired. Good luck on the job hunt!
Speaking of chat, what time are we chatting tomorrow night? Will enough people still want to on eve of the 4th?- Skye
