Grandma's having trouble

Hi, my name is Paige. My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in March, a week before my eighteenth birthday. She has Stage II, but luckily they caught it before it spread to any organs. They decided to do chemo and radiation every two weeks. Since then, she's been unable to eat or drink much (which is especially bad since we live in Arizona, where it is dry and hot). She'd feel "okay" about three days during those two weeks. She missed my last band concert of my high school career, which was the first one she's ever missed (she even used to come to our marching practices on Tuesday nights), as well as my high school graduation. A few weeks ago, she was admitted into the hospital because of dehydration. Her doctor decided to give her chemo and radiation every three weeks instead of two.

But she's still feeling terrible and not eating. The mere smell of foods and certain candles make her feel nauseous. For some reason, she and my grandfather refuse to make appointments for her to go in and get an IV every day, even though my father says she needs to unless she drinks more. He told her tonight that she has to keep trying to eat, especially on the days she doesn't feel as sick. Just talking about her not feeling sick made her feel sick... enough to get off the phone. My dad said that in that particular instance, her nausea was just mental. I don't know whether he was right or just being insensitive. Either way, I'm still worried about her. Nothing seems to help.

Anzemet is the BEST nausea out there. Maybe she could try that.

    I'm sorry about your Grandma.

Hopefully with treatments a little less frequently she'll have more time to recover from them and will feel better.

I can understand why she doesn't want to go have an IV every day. It's bad enough going for the chemo treatments, to be constantly running back and every day would be even more stressful. My husband had chemo a few years ago and even thinking about the Dr. office made him feel sick.

The treatments won't last forever and she'll be feeling better. Try to go by and see her, but don't worry too much because she's got your Grandfather and it will all be over before too long.
