Tamoxifen & Joint Pain
I have been on tamoxifen since March and I've noticed that my hips have been very achy. Has anyone else had any kind of joint pain while taking the tamoxifen? My hips ached a little bit before I started but now they ache a little more. I just had my 3mo check up with my onco and things are fine there so I'm not worrying (or at least, trying not to worry) about that part of it.
Thanks,
Pam

I have been on Tamoxifen since Feb/07 and almost right after I started my left hip starting aching. It did go away about a month or so later. Some days I still feel it a it but nothing like the beginning.
My onc said the tamoxifen does not cause this but everything I have read from patients on the drug say otherwise.
My guess is it is the tamoxifen doing this to you.

I found this thread while poking around to see if anyone else on Tamoxifen is having hip pain. I started Tamoxifen in April, and just this past week I have started having hip pain. I won't see my doctor for three more weeks, so I guess if I'm still hurting I''ll ask about it.

I have joint pain in my shoulders and hands. Onc says it's not from Tamoxifen but I never had these pains before I started the med.
-
I've been on tamox for over 3.5 years and I hate to say it, but I'm still achy/stiff, especially first thing in the am and if I've been sitting too long. (back as well as hips). My onc says tamox doesn't cause achiness ("that's from the AIs"), but I can't agree with him on that one. I'm gonna ask my regular doc this week about glucosamine and omega-3 fish oil and see what he thinks.
-
Glucosamine works well for me. My orthopedic recommended it

Joint pain is now recognized as a side effect from tamox. The oncs have said for years that it wasn't but just a couple of months ago an article was released noting research validating our complaints. I'm not sure why some oncs still say it's not related.
Wish i'd have put the article on my fav list so I could pull it up for you. Sorry. -
hello all, my name is leonie and im emailing from dublin, ireland, ive been on tamoxifen for 1 month, following the usual surgery, chemo and im in the middle of my radiotherapy. I am in awful pain with my joints, wrists, ankles, legs i can hardly get in and out of the car, i thought i was going mad till i read some of your emails, i am going to phone my onc tomorrow and see what he says and ill keep you posted, i am 38 years of age so tamoxifen was what i was recommended. I hope these aches are normal, i get anxious that the cancer is back all over me, but im trying to think positively, best of luck to you all, leonie
-
Good luck, Leonie and let us know what your dr suggests. I hope you get something to help with the pain. I've been on Tamoxifen for almost 3 months now and am just starting to get some achiness.

thanks cynthia for your reply, i saw the registrar onc and he said yes that joint pain is common (like bad period pain he suggested!!!) he just said leave another few months and see if it gets better, great, im trying some walking and little bit of yoga to see if this helps. Hope your keeping and doing well, kind regards, leonie

hi all, my name is dawn and i was misdiagnosed in 2005 when i was told the lump in my breast was benign. i was finally diagnosed 12 month later and the cancer had spread to 3 lymph nodes. i underwent lumpectomy followed by 4 cycles of ac chemotherapy and then 6 weeks of radiotherapy. i started experiencing leg pains just after finishing chemo which then progressed to my back and hips and now in my shoulders and arms, i have been told the aches and pains are due to the effects of chemo and tamoxifen. i had to have surgery recently to remove a tumor from my liver, prior to the surgery i had to stop taking tamoxifen to reduce the risk of blood clots. i stopped taking tamoxifen for 2 weeks and found alot of the joint and muscle pain i had been experiencing eased a great deal. i found this quite reasurring having worried before that the aches and pains were secondaries.

I'm 36 and found a lump in my left breast last May. I had chemo first, then (double) mastectomy and radiation. I finished radiation about a month ago and have been taking tamoxifen for 2 months now. I went back to work last week and have had achy legs at night while laying in bed. Of course, I fear the worst. I saw my oncologist last week and told him about it. He felt my legs and asked if they hurt in certain spots. I would have felt so much better if he would have mentioned that it could be a side effect from tamoxifen. I'm glad to hear others say they are experiencing that as well.

Leonie,
Firstly, I try to read your email with an Irish accent....because it is so cool. I'm sure my efforts are pretty lousy.
I wonder if alot of your achiness might be from the radiation. Tamoxifen is famous for causing side effects that come and go and change over time. Maybe some of it will go away after you finish radiation.
Hope so
Jacky

Isn't tamoxifen suppose prevent osteoporosis? Maybe that has something to do with it. Anyone else heard this?
-
thanks jacky, im sure you do a great irish accent, better than my american one id say, i suppose it could be a combination of chemo and then radiation, i spoke to a cancer nurse and she said chemo can cause side effects for up to a year, its just particularly bad in the morning, i feel like a old woman, hope your doing well, ive to see my onc in may and ill be sure to say it too him, i thought that tamoxifen can cause bone loss but im not sure, maybe its just my body getting use to the oestrogen being depleted, luv from a wet and windy dublin, leonie

Hello ladies. New here.
The joint pain I was having in my elbows and shoulders ended up being caused by lymphedema. I had seen an orthopedist several times and finally had to get a shot of cortisone in one shoulder so I could finish PT after my dbl mast. After about a week of daily LE therapy, my joint pain was gone.

When I went on arimadex last year I had terrible joint pain, even trigger fingers and thumbs. Couldn't even open a door til had surgery on thumb. Now on tamoxifen for several months, was okay until lately have awful joint pain. Have joints I didn't know I had. What is the alternative? What can be done for the joint pain?

Hello, last March I had a bilateral followed by 4 rounds of chemo. I was on tamoxifen but after a full hysterectomy I was put on the other one that starts with the F. I was in so much pain i couldnt sleep, everything hurt so the Onc put me back on tamoxifen. I am better but still i ache like crazy. Especially in the am or if I have been sitting for more than an hour. I run on the treadmil 4 days a week and it hurts. I am trying not to get fatter than I already am. I just want to know, does the pain go away when you are done taking it????? Please say yes. :0)
-
survivormom----I just sent you a PM. Unfortunately my achiness has not gone away since I went off tamoxifen. My oncologist feels the achiness isn't from the tamox, but from the loss of estrogen since my surgery (oopherectomy).

I am new on this site.I began tamoxifen a monthand ahalf ago.I just started getting severe joint pain in my ankles. The doc said it was a minor sprain.I know I didn't injure myself. Three days later my other ankle is doing the same thing. It tightens in the evening and by morning I may not be able to walk. The onc doc said it wasnot related tothe meds, but I am only on Tamoxifen.I did not have chemoor radiation.I had 10cm of cancer plus 3invasive spots by my armpit. They sent my cancer to California and my test score was a10. That is out of 100. 100 being the worst.I did have a doublebiopsy because of the large amont of cancer. All of you women take care-God bless

I too have been having ankle and foot pain.I have been on Tamoxifen for about 6 weeks now. At night it can get really bad. I've taken pain relievers and used a heating pad. Sometimes it hurts to walk. My husband thought that I had injured it too, but there is nothing that I did out of the ordinary. I'm convinced it's from the Tamox. I am hoping that it will subside after time.

Oh my! I have been experiencing hip pain since I started Tamoxifen 1.5 years ago. I keep mentioning it, but none of my doctors seem concerned, and don't think it's related. But I find all these posts describing the same problem! I have heard it from other women too. And now I read that an article was written indicating studies show YES it does cause joint pain. It's a relief to know I am not just crazy, or standing wrong, or walking wrong..or getting older. It has caused me to be more concious of my posture so not to aggravate it, but it's nice to know the cause is really what I thought. I am going to try glucosamine and hope it helps. I have also read that turmeric (a spice) is a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory. I use it regularly and it seems to help. The October '08 Prevention had an article written by a surgeon, who is also a cancer survivor. He mentions this, among other things that are really good for us. Great article if you can get it.

Hi all, new to this site and Tamox. Started it 8 mos ago and the pain started with hips and now severe pains in hands, sometimes the pain moves around. One day it might be knees, or hips or hands or even feet. I have agreed to a rheum. workup, if it comes up empty, my onc agreed to stopping it for 1 mo. to see if I feel better. I really am considering this. I also am very scared. I am 61 and the next 5 yrs of my life are important. I want to be able to walk and kayak again like I used to !!!

I have been on Tamoxifen since Jan 2010. I have noticed aches in my feet, (which I never had before), specifically the top and soles of my feet, knees, and hands. I have carpul tunnel syndrome in my wrists, so I am not sure if the medication is affecting my hands,,, but I find the discussion interesting. I have a follow-up appt in october with my dr....while I was relieved to see others with the same problem and now I've identified the possible cause, I am so concerned. I will not stop taking the medication (for the next 5 years), but at the same time, I understand Kayak's feelings.

I was only on it for 8 days, and the hip pain was so horrible that I was limping around (I could have dealt with the dizziness, nausea, and hot flashes). I also had absolutely no patience - wanted to scream at my children the instant they did anything. But nothing touched the pain. I was already on max dose of natural anti-inflammatory (includes turmeric and bromelain). Started taking max dose Advil, and that didn't help either. I've now been off the Tamoxifen for 4 days, and it hasn't gone away yet. It's horrible. I'm getting PBMs instead. I can't bear the pain. It's like the bone hurts, not the joint, so it hurts even when I don't move. I'm only 42 and have to keep up with 3 kids.
