lumps don't show on mammo

I had my 1 yr mammo today. Had mammo 8/05 - benign findings come back in a year. 4/06 discovered a lump. Had mammo and US - mammo was read as no changes from previous mammo 7 months prior, but tumor showed on US. Diagnosed with extensive DCIS and 3.4 cm IDC, grade III. SNB - 1 node negative, 1 node not clearly malignant. Left mastectomy and chemo. Felt a lump in my right breast a few months ago. Had mammo and US today. Nothing showed on either, although the tech felt two pea size lumps also. Checked extensively with the US. Have an appt with my surgeon in two weeks. Saw my onc in January, said I was fine. Could this be something even if both tests are negative? Wouldn't it show on at least one imaging? I'm not really sure what to think. Has anyone else had any similar results, and what was the outcome? I appreciate your advice. - Sandy

If you're worried you can ask for an MRI ...

Wishing for B9 results for you ...

Sandy, I believe that we have a "gut" feeling when something is not right. When you meet with your surgeon in two weeks tell him of your concern and maybe other tests are necessary. Be persistant until you know something for sure!! Here's hoping for B9!!

I am so horribly sorry you are dealing with this.
I agree about the MRI and gut feel.
I had a perfect mammogram but said I was uneasy about my right breast...no real lump but just a huge gut feel.
They did an ultrasound that didn't really find anything but a tiny shadow so I was sent to have a breast MRI.....ILC. I had my lumpectomy last week. My surgeon insisted that the breast MRI is 98% accurate. HA! My supposed 9mm tumor (according to the MRI) turned out to be 1.8CM...still a stage 1, but DOUBLE the size. That just infuriates me! I know they warn you that machines are not 100%, but to have 3 machines mediocre on this just bugged me.

I hope you do NOT have cancer and your gut is just wired higher for this. BEST to you!!

Sandy, have an MRI and a biopsy. My IDC was read as benign changes on both US and Mammo. So yes they can both be "ok" and this lump could be something.

Be aggressive and insist on more screening if you think something may be wrong. I had 3 lumps of IDC on the right side (each about 1.2 cm) and none were found by mammo or ultrasound. The radiologist found evidence of DCIS on the LEFT side, which sent me to a breast surgeon who found one of the lumps -- the others were found during mastectomy (thank God). I get upset when I think about all that the radiologist missed, but I don't want the karma of having it out with her. In the end, I'm just grateful I was treated.

Lauren, it is often not that the radiologist missed the cancer. At least 10% of cancers are not seen on mammogram. In the under 50 age group I have read this is as high as 25%. A mass often shows as unusual patterns of calcifications. Some BC grow rapidly and have not had a chance to calcify. Some people have very dense breasts which are white and similar in appearance to BC so seeing the BC is not possible.

Radiologists do their best with tests that are not foolproof. I was initially upset about my radiologists failure to see my BC. But after researching the whole thing, it is tricky in some cases. Despite being told I was OK i did proceed to have my lump biopsied. It is simple to do that. The only good lump is in a jar.

    Fists up!

My first lump showed up on the mammogram. We thought it was small and that it was the only lump. Even though I had multiple other mammos and US, the other 2 lumps in the same breast never showed up at all, and the one we did see was 3 times the size they thought it was. What we thought was a small stage 1 tumor was really large, multifocal and stage 3c.

The only lump you know what is for sure is one in a jar. If you think there is a chance it might be something, go with your gut and get a biopsy.

I would never 100% trust mamo or US again.

Just my opinion based on my experience. I'm not trying to frighten you, but I would get the biopsy...

I guess that's why I am so worried. A year ago the lump didn't show on either mammo and the US said the lump was small - turned out to be 3.4 cm and so I ended up with mastectomy after a lumpectomy revealed much more CA than originally thought. How do they do a biopsy if nothing is showing on neither the US or mammo to guide them to the area? The tech put a metal marker during the mammo so the radiologist could see exactly where we felt these lumps and during the US the tech was able to feel both lumps and zero in with the US wand - but still couldn't see anything on the screen. I'm not looking to have CA again, but I am terrified my surgeon might want to take the wait and see approach since nothing is showing. I have an appt in two weeks with my surgeon. My 1 yr. anniversary is next week and I thought that would put a lot of my worries out of my head. I just hate this waiting game. Thanks for all your input - Sandy

    Sandy-

Ask for a MRI. You may have to push, but with your history I would not take a "wait and see" additude. If they pull the "come back in 6 months" thing I would tell them NO. You can also ask for a second radiologist to read all your test...sometimes that clarifies things too. Good luck! Let us know how things come out.

How easy is it for you to get an MRI. I have recently had a reccurence after 7 1/2years. I went for my annual mammo which was clear I always have a ultra sound straight after and that picked up 1 tumor. When I had my surgery They found 5 tumors 4 were over 10mm athe largest nearly 20mm so they werent huge but they werent tiny either. My mother had a clear mammogram and 3 months later felt a lump her tumor ended up being 50mm!!!! and there is no sign of it at all on the mammo. If you are young then dense breast tissue can hide tumours. If you are really worried I think a peace of mind MRI would be a good idea.

My routine yearly mamo found non invasive cancer in my left breast. It never showed the invasive cancer that was twice as big in my right! Luckly when I got a second opinion and changed surgeons she ordered an MRI and Ultrasound for both breasts. When those found the suspicious spot in the right they did a mamogram which again did not find the cancer. A needle biopsy confirmed it was cancer. Thanks to this second surgeon I'm being treated a bit more agresively because of the right side. Am about done with radiation to both breasts at the same time. I asked the techs if they get alot of women like me needing both done at the same time. She said no but we get alot that come back and have to have the other breast radiated.

I am worried after reading your posts. I had a mast. 9/11/06 for extensive DCIS to left breast. The mammo showed the calcifications which turned out to be DCIS. My right breast looked fine, no calc.

Now 7 months later I am having pain and burning in right breast. My dr. did not do an us on the right breast when I had the problem with the left. A couple of weeks ago I had mammo and us, mammo looked clear but us showed moderately suspicious for malignancy.

I am worried that this ca has been there all along and it was just missed. I had us bx a week ago and it came back negative, but surgeon is not convinced. Scheduled for excisional bx this Thurs. Now I am worried that the mammo missed it before and I didn't have an us until now. After reading your posts it sounds like it is fairly common to have bc missed by mammo or us or both. I hate this roller coaster, I want off. I am leaning toward having a mast on the right breast. I will remember to ask my dr. about MRI, not sure Kaiser will do it though.

This is my response to Mary Tim on her thread about MRIs....just couldn't retype it so some of it may sounds like it doesn't belong here but it's my current story. Best wishes!!!

Sounds very familiar to me! My cancerous lumps (3 in all)also didn't show on mammograms because of my very dense breasts. I had my first mammogram post reconstruction/augmentation and was called back for an US because with the digital mammograms they saw 'something' but weren't sure what. After the US the Dr. (same Dr. who read my mammogram actually did my US), mentions casually that I need a needle biopsy and goes on to say that they will be very careful but can't guarantee that they won't 'hit' my implant. Long story made short, I flipped, she says maybe I'd be a good candidate for a MRI with results pending for the biopsy and a repeat mammogram in 6 months. I had the MRI, the spots didn't "light up" and the results came back "probably 2 cysts". Right now, I don't know who to contact and if I'm having another (worthless as far as I'm concerned) mammogram in 6 months or WHAT?????? I talked to the PA at my PS's office this week and she recommends that I see my breast surgeon to sort this out.

I felt my lump so do the doctor and surgeon. I had mammogram, ultra Sound (the tech measured the lump) neither showed the lump. When these tests did not show anything my surgeon sent me for a diagnostic mammogram once it was confirm i had cancer she sent me for MRI to make sure there was no other cancers in either breast.

    Good Luck,
    Elizabeh
