Cathy,
I have dry eyes as well. It definitely got worse after the lasik and seems to be that much worse now.
I keep eye drops next to the bed and every time I wake up from a hot flash I put some drops in my eyes while I'm at it.
I'm glad to hear that you are tolerating the effexor Cathy; that med turned me into a sexually dysfunctional, insomniatic, rage machine. The bummer is, it really did help the hot flashes.
Raye,
Thanks for the kind words. I think your time is completely respectable. It may not be your best time but girl! Think of where you have come from! You rock!
Miz Sissy,
How goes the shoe shopping? -
Thank you so much.
I am taking Wellbutrin and I haven't had a hot flash in months, but please bear in mind that I am not taking Tamoxifen or any other drug of that type as I am ER/PR negative, but I was having the hot flashes from chemo. The Wellbutrin, in my case, is very tolerable. -
Raye- Congrats on the 5K.
ACGW-way to go landing the big one!
MizS- Good luck with your competition! Guess spending the $100 on chocolate would kind of defeat the purpose of dieting, huh?
I weighed in this morning-126. So, I guess all the talk I've been doing about the exercise I'm going to be doing is burning some calories! My children start swimming lessons on Monday, so I will be swimming laps 4 days a week starting next week. I bought a swim cap, and I am such a chicken I think I will put it on my bald head at home along with a baseball cap, so I don't have that horrible locker room moment of being the bald woman. Wish I didn't care so much, but I do. I'll let you all know how the pool feels. I haven't used my chest muscles in 5 weeks, and I think they are going to hurt! But I am diving in Florida in three weeks, with hair or without, so I've got to get loosened up!
Mary -
Good Morning Gals,
I see that everyone has posted recently. Hey, send me your emails so I can make you COLLABORATORS on our stat page!!! My email is on my personal page (click my name).
I have been so ashamed I haven't been able to post here. I started on very small dose Effexor along with the Tamo about a week ago and I have had LOTS of gastric issues. Things are not moving, I have a lot of GAS, I look pregnant, and I feel like a cow. I am certainly not losing weight and it seems impossible. My friend Mena, who has taken Tamo, Effexor, and Femara, also had lots of gastric problems on Tamo and recommended I try Femara.
Yesterday I decided to switch drugs. I still had a prescription for Femara in my purse, and I just had it filled. I know I'm only two weeks out on Tamoxifen, but I don't want to go a whole month gaining weight.
So today I am off Tamoxifen & Effexor...and onto Femara. Hope I don't have as many SEs.
Well, I am back to exercising, and that's good. I biked about 13 miles last night, and pretty soon I'll try running again.
Raye, I took Wellbutrin & it's quite tolerable I think. You are SO lucky you don't have to take anti-hormonals!!! I am glad for you.
Kudos to all of you who are exercising. Congratulations Mary on your wieght loss!!! Carol...Seven pounds down!!! WOHOO! Move over you two, I'm going to be in the weight loss camp soon...I hope!!!
Thomcat, its so nice to hear from you!! How are you doing? I'm glad to hear the Effexor is working for you. Are you exercising?
ACQW..what a fabulous job you are doing with your running and marathons. You must be really buff....!! You are an inspiration to all of us.
So now I'll go back to my morning tea and lift a cup to everyone's good healthy & recovery!!
Mizsissy -
UPDATE!!!
One day on the new medication and I am down two pounds!!! Whoohooo. I've been exercising a lot.
Also...sleeping normally, stomach feels a lot better, I'm regular...what a difference a day and different medication makes!!!
Today I am going out to Borders and buy one of those little booklets where you write down every bite you eat. I think I need to analyze things a little better.
There's hope yet for a pair of red shoes!!!
Mizsissy -
Off to NC to do my triathlon this weekend. Wish me luck!
Casey -
Casey, good luck!
I've swum a half-mile Sun-Wed. this week. My chest is a little tight over the implants, but it is bearable. I feel much better about diving in July. (Except for the baldness. I think I will tie one of those lycra do rags on my head at the beach.) Mary -
Casey,
Best of luck with your triathon! You will do wonderfully. You are truly amazing and inspiring.
Mary - nice swimming - that is tough. Lycra do rag sounds cute. You will look very cool and chic.
Mizsissy - Glad to hear you are sleeping better and congrats on the two pounds.
Now me, I have not run for two weeks - working tons of hours at work - not complaining. I miss the stress relief I get from running most of all, not to mention I am losing all of my muscle tone in my legs. I am heading to the Outer Banks in two weeks and wanted to be a bit more buff, but oh well. Tried my bikini on last night - doesn't look too bad, stuck the prosthetic in the boobless side of the top (which is like a sports bra - or boob flattener as I call them) and man - the prosthetic does not flatten down like a natural breast. Looks very nice and makes my other side look flat. But you know, I don't care. I have on order a tankini, awaiting its arrival from VS.
Ladies, have a wonderful weekend.
Raye -
Cathy! You changed your avatar - I just noticed. You look simply beautiful. Your hair is coming in nice and dark.
Raye -
Raye:
Thanks for the compliment....as of yesterday I quit wearing my wig (exactly six months to the day that I started wearing a wig). When I go out I'm wearing a baseball hat but hopefully in a couple of weeks I won't bother. One thing I have to admit, though, is that it came in very gray and I bought dye at the health food store. As Bobbi Brown says, hair dye is the best invention that ever happened for women!!!!
Cathy
ps - I'm still exercising - are we suppose to record something on the sheet created by Mizsissy? -
Raye and Mary,
Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. The triathlon was a lot of fun although I felt like I was going to drown 1/2 way through the swim. I beat my goal time by 6 minutes so all in all I would say it was a success.
Raye,
Have a great time at the Outer Banks. My husband and I spent a month in Avon for our honeymoon 5 years ago this August. We love it there but what a drive!
Mary,
There is no doubt in my mind that you will be fit for diving when July comes around.
Cathy,
Your hair looks great! No doubt you are more comfortable wigless, particularly with exercise.
Where are the rest of you ladies?
I hope everyone is doing well and feeling stronger all the time.
Casey -
Casey,
Great job! You beat your goal time by 6 minutes, wow - that is tremendous!! You rock, girl.
Yes, I cannot wait for vacation. Oh, a month in Avon, that sounds like heaven. You're right about the drive. Geez. The first year we went down, we drove straight through - took us 16 hours (including Hatteras ferry- 45 minutes). Now we stay in Williamsburg one night and drive in the next day - much easier.
Haven't worked out in two weeks. Feeling blubbery and stressed.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Raye -
Casey, I am so glad you've given us a name I can pronounce!!! Yeah!!! And you go girl with all you running and triathlons. We're proud.
Raye, Cathy, Mary...I am so glad to see you've been posting and keeping the thread going. I've been up to my ears in crises lately. 18 yr old family pet died last weekend, and today I got bad news from two different BC sisters, both of whom might be into serious mets...so...I'll just have to say a lot of prayers.
On a positive note I can tell you that I'm all done with treatment, I've got my energy back, I'm exercising, and I've finally got my meds in order. I'm taking femara and prozac with nothing but positive side effects. I've added a very small dose of effexor to the prozac which has the wonderful effect of *eliminating* hot flashes and reducing my appetite down to nothing. I've haven't been weighing or keeping track of calories, but my consumption is definitely down and my clothes are a whole lot looser.
Hey Raye, you're going to Avon...do you mean Hatteras?!!! My husband and I have spent a few vacations down there. We rented a fabulous cottage called The OutRigger, about two lots back from the ocean. Just loved it!!!! Stay in touch and send us pix.
Cathy, your hair looks great, and I can see you're gonna look great when it grows back out.
To access our data page, you need send me your email address if you haven't already. I think Mary has. The document is accessible via a Google account (free to everybody) and this way each person can go in and update their own data.
You can find my email address by clicking on my personal page (click on my name over my avatar).

Raye,
Have you ever had the peanut soup in Williamsburg? It is marvelous! Are you staying on Ocracoke? My cousins with assorted kiddiewinks, brother and sister, aunt and uncle will be spending a week at Nags Head in August. After my mom, aunt and uncle passed we decided that our family was too small and too precious to not get together at least every other year. I think I am going to ride my bike from Atlantic Beach to Cedar Island and take the ferry to Ocracoke, then to Hatteras and ride up to Nags Head for the week.I can't wait. Oh, I think you are going to have the best time after all that you have been through.!!!!
Mizsissy,
Nice to hear from you!
I am glad, glad, glad that treatment is done and that you are feeling well on your way to being yourself.
I put my husband on the Adkins diet three weeks ago. He hasn't lost any weight and I can't seem to stop eating cashews! I told him we would have a carb frenzy feast July 4th through July 8th before we go back to the diet.
I've chosen my next event. The four mile women's run in Charlottesville, Va. My sister-in-law promises 8 minute miles, I promise not to puke at the end. It raises money for the UVA breast center so it seems like a good cause and a good way to spend Labor Day.
Have a marvelous weekend ladies!!!!!!!!!!
Casey -
Mizsissy - I am so very sorry to hear about your girlfriends who may have mets. They will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am also so sorry about your beloved pet. We lost our 7-year old choc. Lab a little over 3 years ago, he had a tumor on his spine and couldn't walk - just heartbreaking. Now we have an almost 3 year old choc Lab. I tell him he (Riley) and Bailey (the dog who passed away) are the most beautiful dogs in the world and heaven. my babies.
Glad to hear you've got your meds worked out. That is great.
Casey,
No, we've never been to the peanut shop! Sounds like you are on a nut kick - that and the cashew frenzy. We usually pull into Williamsburg around 5, walk around and see the animals - I got into the pin with the sheep last year, looking to pet them and they start baaaing at me, I got nervous and got out. My husband tells me, "uh, you are not supposed to get in there, what if there is a ram"! ha. After petting the animals and walking around a bit, we have dinner, go to bed and head out early the next am for the OBX.
Yes, we are staying on Ocracoke, this will be our 5th year there. We just love it, so peaceful. You will have a wonderful time in Nags Head. You are going to ride your bike all that way. My lord honey, you are something!!! Have a wonderful time. Oh, and 8 minute miles. Wowee. I ran a 5K a few years ago. Got caught up in the moment at the start of the race (you know how that goes); I passed the clock after the first mile; it said 8 minutes and I almost freaked, I think I had to to walk the last mile. I have to pace myself and cannot run that fast for 3 miles.
Ok. Got to get busy here today.
Have a wonderful weekend all!!!
xoxo
Raye -
Hey Everyone,
Cathy, your hair looks great. I heard that Whole foods sells a vegetable dye that works well. I have used a Clairol dye already but I think I may give the vegetable dye a shot and see. Mine was all gray when it came it.
Casey - Congratulations on your achievement! I can't even imagine a triathalon. I have started walking again, an hour a day and started swimming a little in my pool. After two laps I feel as though i could cough up a lung! I can't imagine how wonderful it must feel to accomplish what you have done.
Mizsissy, I am so sorry to hear abut your friends with the possible mets. That is just horrible news. And losing a pet too...you have had a tough time. But you sound well and it sounds like you are feeling healthy. Is anyone updating the spreadsheet - I am going to check it because I have been losing a few with my increased walking. I don't mind posting when I lose!
Raye, You're not exercising? I hope you are feeling well - if you are working too much make sure you make time for yourself. Have fun on vacation. -
Hey Spa Gals,
Thanks for the up & up and kudos for all your good work. My energy level is really back...I feel great mentally and physically. I just have to get rid of that stupid cocktail hour, which has been a little difficult to do with the stress over friends. But I myself feel really good physically.
My mental capability is coming back; here's how I know. Last weekend I went camping, and when I went to the showers, I put my wedding ring in the soapbox to make sure I didn't forget it. The next morning, my ring wasn't in its usual place, but I remembered right away!!!
My friends are Mena and Puppy, who you may know from other threads. Puppy has a very serious and delicate brain aneurysm surgery coming up, and Mena has lung mets. The last report was progression in March or April, and she's been on a new chemo, Tykerb, since then and will get her first set of scans on Tuesday, results on Thursday. These results are going to be pretty important. But if the results aren't good, there are still other avenues.
Sorry to depress you with all this stuff. Hopefully everything will work out OK...we'll know soon one way or the other about both of them.
xxxooo Mizsissy -
Hi Everybody!
Mizsissy, so sorry to hear about your pet and bc friends. And so glad to hear you are feeling stronger and sharper!
Carol-congrats on the weight loss! For those of us who are ER positive, losing those fat cells cuts back on our estrogen production! Yeah!
Casey, you are impressive!
I am going to do the Race for the Cure in Portland in September. I am trying to decide if I should start running (Ha! More like stagger and gasp) to get in shape for it, or if I should resign myself to walking it. If I started running now, could I be ready for a 5k in September? There is a track at the Y where I swim, so I could do a little running and then cool off in the pool. But most of my team will be walking, so maybe I should not make the effort. I don't know!
I spent the weekend at the beach with my do-rag and new boobs. Quite a combo! We rented a kayak Saturday, and that was lots of fun. I'll be diving next Sunday and Thursday. Sunday will be two easier, shallower dives in Panama City Beach, Florida, and Thursday will be a little more technical and intense in Pensacola Beach. This way, if I flame out on the easy dives, I can cancel the second day of diving. But I think I'm ready.
Haven't weighed myself for several days, but I think I'm pretty much at 122-my pre-chemo weight. Now I need to work on getting some muscle back!
Mary -
Mary,
I think you should try for the run! I think you can do it. You have come so far, just believe in yourself!
I am excited to hear about your dives. I used to dive and had some wonderful adventures in St. Thomas and Belize but have not dove since I moved to West Virginia.
You are right about getting muscle back. I am still shocked at how small my arms are. I know I should lift weights, particularly to strengthen my shoulder blade musculature but right now I can't get motivated.
Mizsissy,
Sometimes I just don't read closely enough.
I am so sorry to read about your friends and about your family pet. I had to put my dog to sleep during chemo and it just seemed to add insult to injury. I hope that your grief is tempered by the fact your pet was with you for such a long time.
Carol,
Glad to read about your weight loss but more importantly, that you have been walking further. I think ultimately our goal should be about fitness and health, regardless of weight.
I hope you are keeping cool during these very hot, fairy lit summer nights.
Casey -
Hi All!
Hope you had a great July 4th. Maybe you all have the post-vacation blues and that's why this thread is so quiet!
I had a great weekend at the beach, and I did, indeed survive my two days of diving. What a huge confidence boost! Now if I could just get my hair to grow a little thicker and faster!
I am interviewing for a new job tomorrow--I really want it. I turned it down just after my BC diagnosis, because it seemed like too much to handle--chemo and a new job! But it is available again, so wish me luck! I currently work at a culinary school, and the daily (free!) lunch is killing me! 5 courses with dessert! I will miss the food, but at the same time, I really want to get away from the sugar and refined flour!
How are you all?
Mary -
Hi Mary,
I agree this thread is much too quiet. I haven't been posting because I am so ashamed I didn't win my red shoes, and I just can't seem to lose weight.
My excuse is that most of last month I was on Effexor which had me so constipated that nothing moved. So I'm off it now. But I think the only way I am going to do this is keep track of every single calorie. I feeel so hopeless and helpless.
I found one of my pitiful diet books from last year down in the basement. Geez...I weighed 136-7 this time last summer, so I've made a litttttle progress over the past year. I just want to get down to 124 before vacation THIS YEAR no matter what I do. Ideas anyone?
Raye, how was your vacation down on the Outer Banks?
Mary, you're gonna get that job. I feel it in my bones!
xxxooo Mizsissy -
Mary,
I am glad you had a great weekend and that the dives were a success!
Don't worry, the hair will come back and before you know it you will be in desperate need of a haircut.
Good luck on the interview. Something tells me that the job is as good as yours. Why would it be available once again now that your health is better? It is meant to be.
Mizsissy,
Sorry about the shoes but I still think there is a lovely pair in your future. Don't give up hope!
My best advice is to purchase a heart rate monitor. We all grew up with the notion that in order to become more fit you should exercise in the (220-your age)x 60% or 80%. Not true. Your heart rate is determined in utero/birth/genetics/whatever you want to call it and it remains constant through your life. You can easily determine it through what is called a sub-max test. Once it is determined then you can begin to workout based on heart zones. There are five of them and your best cardiovascular fitness and weightloss occur when you are working in your aerobic and threshold zones. For instance; my maximum heart rate is 190. This means I need to be working with my heart rate between 133 and 156 to be in my aerobic zone and between 156 and 173 to be in my threshold zone. When I started paying attention to my heart rate I found I burnt a lot more calories and my fitness level improved dramatically in a relatively short period of time. I also lost about 10#. By understanding my heart rate I was also able to workout smarter. This meant I no longer felt I had to go full out for long periods but could do high intensity intervals in my threshold zone, recover to my aerobic zone and repeat this. It cut down on fatigue and bordom. I bought the Timex heart rate monitor because once I programed all the information into it it told me with relative acuracy how many calories I burned in a day (My record is 5863 while riding a particularly long stretch of scenic road into a head wind and I swear all up hill one day in Spain. I also quickly replenished those calories with some great wines, cheese, lamb, olives and other assorted vegetables!)There is a website (I think it is Heartzones.com)that is very helpful.
Sorry for the long ramble but I firmly believe in using a heart rate monitor when working out.
I hope everyone is doing well.
I am off to Charlottesville this weekend to see my niece and nephew, follow up with the breast surgeon on Monday and stock up on all the yummy food I can't purchase at home!
Have a great weekend ladies. -
Hi Casey,
Thanks for that info about the heart monitor. Maybe I should give it a try. You're the expert around here in my humble opinion.
Well, guess what, the scale dropped 1 1/2 pounds yesterday. I just decided it was time to count every calorie. I think I'm eating too much. You know, being "too good to myself." I am now at 131.5 and 129 isn't too far away. My weight up until about age 32 was 117, then in grad school I jumped to 124. This last weight gain came when we moved into our present house and got involved in major renovations...no kitchen meant pizza and beer most evenings.
I think I do exercise a lot. My husband and I have just started going on a 90 minute bike ride every other day or so over a dirt path (we're spurning the easier paved path now), and I run about a mile on the days I don't bike.
Strength training...I don't get near as much as I should because I usually just have time for aerobic or strength training, and I love my runs and bike rides. But it had quite an effect last Sunday when we went to the gym because it was too hot out, and I saw myself in the mirror. I felt like a pig. And that's when I decided something had to give.
So I have one month between now and vacation, and I am going to try to lose 2 pounds a week. That would get me where I want to be.
Thanks SO MUCH for the support. I really need it.
xxxooo Mizsissy -
Mary, You should definitely try for the run. We have a Komen walk here in October and I have thought about it too. Not sure I could do it but I am starting to run a little on the treadmill, maybe a minute or two, each time I am at the gym. Good luck with the new job, I know you'll get it.
Casey, YOu are right about being fit regardless of weight. That is not so much my concentration now, although it helps me gauge my success.
MizSissy, I am having trouble too, I think, because it is SO difficult to give up my red wine. I am trying but I think that is why I am stalled. I think we just have to keep at it and not get discouraged. You are doing some great things too - the bike ride sounds great. -
Hi everybody!!!!
Mary - Good luck on the new job!!!
Mizsissy - How easy was it getting off the Effexor? I'm thinking of stopping too because I'm concerned about it interfering with Tamoxifen. I know I've read where it's one of the safer anti-depressants but I don't want to take any chances. I know weight loss can be so hard. Hang in there and keep exercising!
Casey - The heart monitor sounds interesting. Years ago I thought I was doing the right thing by exercising alot and keeping my heart rate up based on the 220-your age formula...and I actually gained weight.
Carol - I did give up the red wine and can't believe I did. I was so turned off by it with chemo and haven't taken it up since because I'm so highly ER+.
Good to hear from everybody - I'm continuing to exercise by mainly doing water aerobics - the heat and humidity are oppressive to do anything else outdoors here in SW FL.
Cathy -
Thomcat,
You don't have to worry *at all* about Tamo and Effexor. The original study that was done used a number of antidepressants. Prozac was one of them and it definitely interfered with Tamo, but Effexor was the one that was OK. That's probably why you were prescribed Effexor.
I don't have the study handy that said this, but I'll check around and find it if you want.
Nice to hear from you!!!
Mizsissy -
Hello Ladies,
Mary - I hope your interview went well today and that they have already offered you the job!
Casey - Yes! My brother is a track coach and highly recommends a heart rate monitor. Being the non compliant sister, I have never gotten one and maybe that is why I was bigger when I ran every night!
MizSissy, congrats on the drop in weight! Good for you. It is TOUGH. You'll get those red shoes yet, you just wait. The only tip I can offer is the simple "lower your caloric intake." It is the only thing that works for me. Although I must say I've never burned 5K calories in one activity. Casey, you are something else hon. I gained some weight on vacation (and yes, thank you, it was lovely and so relaxing) and am trying to take it off.
Cathy - good to hear from you! Water aerobics sounds so fun and refreshing. My girlfriend and I did them last year in Mexico in the pool somewhat against our will - "Don't be lazy senoritas - come and do some water aerobics..." So much fun.
Carol - First of all, I want to tell you your avatar is just gorgeous. I love that hair on you! You look like a very chic teenager. I am going to do the Komen race in October and the American Cancer Society walk in September. Those events are so fun and inspiring (not to mention emotional).
I have to admit I have been a very lazy senorita. I have got to get my butt in gear, I just have no motivation! I have worked out since I was 18 and now I just can't get into it. We are going to Kelley's Island up in Lake Erie this weekend to ride bikes, so I will be getting a little activity, but nothing like I used to get.
Have a great weekend all.
Raye -
Raye, First, thank you for the compliment on my hair. It is great for the summer but I definitely will let it grow. We did the Relay for life also and it was so emotional. They do this survivors lap around the track and it is just lined with family and friends applauding us survivors. Then at the halfway point you meet your caregiver. Jeez, I totally lost it and I am not usually a crier. It was very emotional.
Cathy, I am ER pos also but red wine is my only vice at this point! I had an aversion to it during chemo too, but my taste for it came back after I was done. -
Hi Everyone...
Carol: You look stunning!!!! LOVE the hair!!!How many weeks out from treatment are you?
Good to see everyone's post...all seem do being doing well. I had my exchange surgery three weeks ago. Looks pretty good, better than I expected actually. I was really lopsided before because of the lumpectomy on one side 15 years ago. Over the years it really atrophied from the radiation. So, I had one big breast and one little dented one. Now I have two mediums....ha! Am not looking back on the decision to have the bi-lateral mast. I will see the ps again in three months at which time we will discuss the tattooing.
Other than that I have another three weeks to go on my restrictions for running and lifting...and I still have to wear a sport bra 24/7 for another three weeks. So, I am really (ok sort of) trying to watch my eating habits until then....
Stay well everyone! -
Hi Everyone!
This is me at the beach over the 4th. You can see that my hair is still NOT growing, but my boobs look hot! Blue-glad yours turned out better than you expected! I'll be doing some tattoos soon, and that should help break up the Barbie Doll effect.
I'm still swimming 4-5 days a week, but I haven't picked up a weight even though my doc cleared me weeks ago. Maybe next week...
Still waiting to hear about the job, but unofficially, it's mine! Yeah! Big raise and great insurance!
Mary
