Can you drive yourself to radiation treatments?

Options

I want to choose a lumpectomy but I am single with limited support network. The cancer center is appox. 15 miles awaywith no interstate involved. Can you drive yourself?

Yes, I drove myself everyday to a center that was about 10 miles away. I think most everyone does unless the center is very far away.

I had lumpectomy followed by radiation and just finished rads last Tuesday. It all went much better than I expected.

    Good luck.

    Hugs,

Yes I drove myself the 35 miles to the center and back each day after work...it is doable but near the end I got very tired and would crash the moment I walked in the door at home in the evenings.

I drove to all of my radiation treatments. I wasn't working through treatment, so I had an easier time with fatigue.

I,too am single. I drive 43 miles from my home to the hospital for treatment every day, and then home. I am also taking anti-anxiety medication (it doesn't make me sleepy, just takes the edge off the claustrophobia). I plan to run errands on the way home (I have a late am appointment), then take it easy in the afternoons. I have 21 of 33 treatments left, and so far it looks like I'll be able to drive myself the whole time. A 15 mile drive should be very doable. Just remember not to plan too many errands in a single day.

I started my rads yesterday, and I will be driving myself for the first 3 weeks for sure. MY DH or my sister will drive me the last couple if I need help. The doctor seems to think I won't, so I might be driving them all. I live about 45 to 50 km from the Cancer Center.

Good luck in your decision making.

    Hugs...Joni

I finished rads last June. I drove myself every time and had no problems with it. I didn't really feel the fatigue others have experienced.

    Good luck to you.

I too drove myself to/from rads. I was still on summer vacation for the first half of my rads and went in the morning. The last half I was back to work and went in the afternoon after work. All the best to you. Hugs from Denver, karen

I drove to all of mine - about 10 miles. Worked each day and had late afternoon appointments. I was fatigued by it wasn't debilitating. I did get in the habit of going to bed early at night, sometimes as early as 8:00pm. Just try to get plenty of rest and you should do fine. Good Luck!

I asked this same question after my lumpectomies and before I started rads. YES you can drive yourself. I drove an hour each way to my treatment center. Towards the end I was dreading the drive and the treatments but it is doable.
    Best wishes.

Hi - I drove myself every day - it was about a 42 mile round trip in traffic. I went early morning, ran some errands and tried to walk about two miles before heading home. But that was about it for me for the day - made lunch and laid on the couch!! The fatigue does creep up on you. Good luck with your treatments.

Yes, I would do a daily morning walk then drive myself to radiation treatments in the afternoon. Probably 20 miles round trip. I did the daily walks as I had lots of neuropathy in my feet after Taxol treatments and the daily walks helped. Joann

I do every day. It is about 10 miles to the center and then I go to work. I am an accountant so I am sitting most of the day. I do find that I get tired in the afternoon but otherwise am OK. 24 down and 6 more to go. Will be happy to be done.

I drove myself everyday to radiation. I got very fatigued towards the end but it was doable. I then went to work after each treatment. I did go to bed early--sometimes by 7pm. Good luck--you will be fine.

like so many offering support & encouragement.... i too have driven myself for the daily zapping. they've been very flexible and have been able to change my time from 3:00 to 7:00 a.m. and now this week i have a couple trips @ 10:30 --- all to accomodate my consulting schedule, which differs day to day. I've had 13 so far, so good.

reach out to others whenever possible, i've met a couple of my neighbors due to my newly religious walking our little neighborhood.... and i've told them of my dx, so many offers for help.

I'll join the others in saying that I too drove to all of my rad appts. I'd like to add that's it a great time to listen to a book on tape/cd. I listened to an entire Harry Potter book. - Kathy

I drove myself too with no problem. I was dreading the 7 weeks of radiation, but was amazed at just how fast the time went by. Kate

I drove myself 50 miles round trip up till the last week and a half. The fatigue hit and decided it would be safer to let my friend drive me those last days. Three days into her driving me I was glad she was doing the driving! I had 33 days of rads with the last 8 being boosts.

I drove myself to all my rads apps. I used to get up at 6 , leave at 7 to avoid the city traffic get there for 8. I used to sit and talk to all the others till my slot at 9 , drive home and have time to myself before work in the afternoon. I had 36 treatments.
I used to like driving myself , gave me time to myself!!

Can you drive to radiation? Absolutely!! I'm single too, and although I have a very close friend who was willing to go with me to my appointments, I worked during my treatments, and I told her if she wanted to come along, she would have to meet me there because I was coming directly from work. I drove 23 miles to work, then from work to the treatment facility was another 30 miles away, then another 25 miles home (total of 78 miles round trip) 5 days a week (when gas prices were on the rise too) I ended up going to my treatments by myself.

Fatigue wasn't really a major factor either. I did it because I knew I HAD TO! I know you'll be fine even if you have to go by yourself. Radiation is actually quite uneventful.

Oh gosh, I have had no problems at all driving to rads and I had chemo first. I only have two more treatments to go and have not had any fatigue at all. I am back to working out and doing my usual activities. The actual treatments take about 2 minutes. It takes longer to get into your gown and wait for the tech to come get you. Good luck.

I wonder if I had the fatigue hit hard when it did because I was having rads on both breasts at the same time?

In my particular situation, the OP Surgery Dept would not release me without someone there to pick me up. I actually hired a limo service with a female driver who agreed to come into the waiting room when I was ready to leave. The cost was well worth it and she turned out to be an angel.

I plan on driving myself to radiation (MammoSite) next week to and from the facility which is 80 miles round trip.

I drove myself to rads daily 13 miles (no freeway) away with absolutely no problem. Then drove to work. No fatigue.

I did use audio books to entertain myself during my commute. Made the drive go VERY quickly.

I am lucky because recently they opened a new Cancer radiation facilty 5 minutes from my house. So that's where I opted to go. I go in at 7:40 am get tx and the rest of the day is mine!

Wow, five minutes is great. I go about 15 minutes each way which is really not bad at all. Unfortunately though starting Mon. my new time will be 11:45 instead of my usual 8:30am which I loved because my son is now on official summer schedule. The new time really cuts into my day but it will all be over in a few weeks anyway... and I can't wait.

I drove 3 hour round trip to 7 weeks of rads. I stayed over night 1 or 2 times a week and that helped. I kept up a walking program through rads and this helped with my energy.
