Hi everyone! I was AWOL last week, but last week wasn't very positive for me as I became neutropenic, got a systemic infection, and had to be hospitalized for a day. But I'm all better now!
My positive is: With lots of eye makeup and blusher, I look pretty good with no hair!
I have a cute wig, courtesy of the American Cancer Society and the lovely woman who helped me pick one out.
I'm making headway on my homework. -
Crystal we missed you so much. I wasn't home but I noticed this week someone was missing and my percoset filled brain couldn't put a finger on it till just now!
MissS, as I told Raye a couple of times, we are in this together so there is never too bold or TMI (too much info) as long as we need answers to our questions. So, I was a D cup before surgery. Because of my body shape to house the new boobs and because I need to have saline, I am going to be a C cup. Having the larger boobs gave me extra skin that was an asset when the one skin flap failed 3 days post-surgery.
I have now caught up on all the new comedies dh and I bought at various places the months before surgery. We found some great bargains like Rodney Dangerfield double feature, GRumpy/Grumpier Old Men and Robin Hood Men In Tights! They have seen me through these past days! So have your emails and pm's. Thank you all over again! Especailly Jule, you are the best and you deserve all the happiness due you. It is your time, girlfriend. Have a good time squeezin' the gs to dickens! -
Miss S - Yeah only 3 chemos to go!! I'm so glad you feel good. I'm glad you had a nice dinner with your sister - I wish my sisters were closer.
Beth - Lucky you to have 4 surgical bras - I was so busy washing mine and that was just with the mess from the mammosite catheter. Remember those drains are helping you heal and will be gone soon. I'm glad that you had all clear on the nodes and confirmation that you had made the right choice in preventative. Also give that man a hug from me - isn't it nice when our choices are confirmed. Of course you picked a good one - you deserved it.
Valerie - WooHoo no appointments for 6 months!! That is great!!I'm thrilled with 30 days of no patient status. And I'm glad you had a good trip to Cape May.
Sheila - you are so right about hairy yarn - it takes a couple rows to realize you missed a stitch. I started knitting again after not for about 20 years (I've been crocheting since my 20's) and made several hairy scarves. Was a great way to learn quickly not to drop a stitch!! Welcome to this group - I think we'd all wear your hats proudly!!!
Jule - have a great weekend with your quilt friend and your grandson!! Hope you get lots of squeezes . I'm glad you survived such a busy week at work - I know that its good and bad.
Now my positives
My bulbs, brussel sprouts, peppers and tomato plants are all in pots or the ground. Just have a few more wave petunias to plant. Plus some seeds from last year (and probably bad) have been spread too. I can't even begin to describe the relaxation I get from gardening - even when I'm killing rose bushes .
This has been a crazy week - I think my DH is finally reacting to diagnosis and treatment and has been so uptight. Course he's a guy so he won't talk it out. I ran away from home Wednesday night cause everyone was so crabby - on my walk I found the nicest place to hide - a neighbor is gardening in a public area and has made stairs down to a wide creek. Very zen like. I'm planning on going there this weekend to journal. But there very fact I had to leave the house made DH think that he needs to mellow a little. Plus my faking it is working!!
We are of course crazy (like it always is at the end of the school year). Mahony (ds) has a tournament on Saturday along with a detetion (faked a pass to finish something in the library for history - wanted to keep his A+ fool), Delaney (dd) has a soccer tournament and we have girl scout stuff both days. I also have a rehabbed double to clean cause we are putting it on the market ASAP. I should have taken Monday off
Hope everyone has a great weekend!! -
I had company for 8 days. We had a great time together; she is a very good friend. She offered to come after my surgery, but Jeff takes very good care of me, so I told her to come on out with her adorable 8 y. o. daughter so we could enjoy her visit. Her husband was able to get away for 3 days to join us. She is a great house guest, loves to cook and was always picking up.
But it is so nice to have the house to ourselves again.
Tomorrow I will do laundry, and clean and do some work for work because my 2 Dr. appts Monday and Tuesday will cause me to miss work both days.
We live in the Florida Keys, and every dr visit is an hour and a half or two hour drive to Miami.
I have some catching up to do which I will get to do over the weekend.
So my positive is I had a great time with my friend, but now I have some time to relax. -
Crystal - we must have been posting at the same time - sorry that you have become neutropenic but am glad you are feeling better - Great thing about wigs and makeup - they'll hide anything. Seriously - sending high neutrophils counts your way.
Tricia - totally dropped you off the list - sorry - glad you had a good visit with your friend and her daughter - she does sound like a wonderful visitor - wish Indiana was more interesting . And congrats on getting dates!! I know that helps!! -
Beth--I'm so glad to hear that you're doing well and on the road to recovery. Sending prayers your way for healing and strength. I do so admire your positive attitude and courage.
-
jpann & beth, here is the link to the pattern that I orginally found. http://www.crochetmagazine.com/free_patterns/pdfs/fp_may04_wiggie.pdf I posted it also on the crafting thread. When I made the first one, I used colored paperclips or small brass safety pins to mark the beginning sticth of each row, that made it easier to follow the pattern, I also checked off each row as I completed the row so I would not lose track. The Lion Brand yarn website (www.lionbrand.com) also has patterns for chemo caps.
Sheila -
Just a quick note right now, but I WILL be back to post more a little later...
I just read Tricias post about getting her oncotypeDX score back today....
TRICIA: CONGRADS!!!!!! I feel bad as I intended on sending you an ecard last night for you day today but things got a little out of control here over the weekend and I was too tired to post much...will explain when I come back....just wanted to tell you how happy I am for you ...
Love & Hugs
Jule
PS....all you other girls-dont think you got of easy just yet, I intend of visiting each of you in my next post -
Oh, thank you Jule. You are so sweet.
I did see my onc today and got my oncotype results. My score is 13 which translates to an 8% chance of recurrance in 10 years. That is considered low, so no chemo! YAY! He will start me on AI after my mastectomy.
Tomorrow I see the plastic surgeon.
Tricia -
Tricia - congratulations 8% is the same as anyother person!! WOOHOO so glad for you!! Let us know what the ps says.
Nothing postive here - was a horrible weekend - lots of running kids, 12 hours of cleaning rentals and then 6 hours of girl scout stuff. I guess the positive is that
1) I had the energy
2) I did it!!
Have a great week all!! -
Tricia - I am sooooo happy for you. I am so glad you do NOT have to go thru all that!!! One less mountain to climb.
All the best,
Valerie -
That is great news, Tricia! BTW, my mom is on Arimidex (and her BC was advanced when she was dx'd and she's now NED) - with no side effects. I think it's because she is physically active. You hear a lot about side effects of AI's but I want you to know there are women who have NONE. And AI's really do work against BC.
-
Wonderful news, Tricia! No Chemo!!!!! Wooohoooo!!!
Miss S -
Thank you, ladies.
Crystal, that is great to hear about your Mom. I plan to have no side effects. -
Sorry Ive been MIA so much this past couple of weeks, but between trying to get back into the swing at work and things being so busy at home Im too pooped in the evenings to be here ....
Heres a quick update on what Ive been up to....
Friday-worked all day, met friends for dinner and dancing...out until 1 a.m.
Saturday-went to the parade, horse races dinner, son broke his ankle and had to have surgery then after that met up with friend and went dancing until 2 a.m.
Sunday-tried to sleep in, didnt work ...they finally released my son from the hospital and we got home about 2 in the afternoon...
Monday-back to work, son called said he slipped with his crutches on a throw rug and smacked his now metal plated, nuts, bolts, screwed and wired ankle so had to come home and take him to the Dr. x-ray looked good thankfully, but he is in alot of pain...
Tuesday-back to work to take a breather!!!!!!!!!!
I am one tired girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope all is well with everyone and I will check back in tomarrow evening....Oh and on top of everything else when I got to work Monday a storm that passed through here took out our internet modem so no internet at work until Thursday ......
Hugs
Jule -
no drains on the right side! yayay!!! it feels so much better already. the sites were gettign very irritated and starting to look nasty. it only hurt when they were checking them out. the actual removal was a piece of cake. thanks to those of you for giving me heads' up on what it will be like. i can be such a wuss! i now need a nap. we went to walmart to get gauze pads and nostick pads to dress the site where they came out and it wore me out. but....i got to see my gs! all he had to do was smile and it made my day.
bbl. have a great day!
oh. missS, got your im but you signed off before i could reply. dh was on the internet and he didn't see the box pop up for a good 10 minutes after you sent the im. sorry! we can try again! -
Hey Beth and Jule!
Jule, it's pretty bad when you have to go to work to rest. LOL It does sound like you do a lot of fun stuff, though. I hope son heals quickly. How old is he?
Beth, it must be great to have the drains out. I guess I have drains in my near future. Sounds like you are getting better every day.
My surgery did get scheduled for June 2. I'm glad, but the reality is beginning to sink in as well. I am so glad to have met you all.
Tricia -
Hi Tricia,
Im not sure one week at work is going to get me any rest...its been a mad house there too!!!!
I am pretty active but normally not all hours of the night like that so it really caught up with me...I normally do more quiet things...
I guess I should have added that my son is 26 when I posted that....made it sound awful that I went out playing while he was in the hospital ....
Beth.....glad you are feeling better each day....
gotta run fix dinner but will be back to visit each of you in a bit...
Hope you are all doing wonderful!!!!
Hugs
Jule -
Yeah Jule, I thought..., "Jule dumped her little boy off at the hospital and went out partying it up with her friends." Heh. Just kidding... and I have called and withdrawn my complaint to CPS. Hope he heals quickly... I hope you get some rest, too!
Beth, so happy you got part of your drains out. I had two drains and one hurt terribly when they pulled it out and the other one barely hurt at all. Hope you continue to have a good recovery. You can leave me an IM anytime and I will get it when I get back online.
Tricia, glad you got a date for surgery. I know it's scary, but I think waiting forever is even worse! You'll be glad to get it over with, I'm sure.
Tomorrow I have to visit my BS to have some lumps checked out that are around my mastectomy site. I know it's rare to grow malignant tumors while getting chemo, so I keep telling myself this is nothing. After all the bad news I have received since the beginning of my bc road, I am not sure. I'll definitely be happy to hear her say it's nothing!! I'll also be getting my second infusion of Herceptin.
I hope I have a great positive for Friday!
Miss S -
Miss S-Your so funny!!!!!! Thank you for the smile ....Oh and thanks for recinding your complaint to CPS, too;) He's starting to feel a little better but its going to take him awhile...I keep telling him he needs to stay off it and keep it elevated but does he listen???? NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
I will go with you to the bs tomarrow and will kick him in the shins if he dare telling you anything but good news!!!!!! My thoughts are with you but I know they are nothing. (if he starts hopping around on one foot during your appt you will know Im there and I decided to kick him for giving you all the bad news before )
Tricia-you know we will all be with you on the 2nd so dont worry, we will keep you safe You will be fine and heal quickly just because I said so We wont let it be any other way!!!!
Beth-that drain thing feels funny when they pull it out...I still like the analogy of the spagetti through the nose ...mine didnt hurt at all....glad you are finally getting them out...wont be long now and you will be rearing to get back to things ...
Crystal-so glad to hear the news about your mom, Im one of the lucky ones taking that too and so far no SE's ...hope your doing well....
Hugs
Jule -
Happy Friday - Hope everyone finds us in our new home. I think that the whole idea of this post might have been lost on the moderators - as a newly diagnosised it was nice to come and focus on a positive. Every once in a while we'll have to invite positive girls to join us!!
Jule - hope your son is doing better - I broke my right ankle right around his age - and 19 years later those pins and plates are still holding up.
Miss S - I'm sure the lumps are scar tissue - but I'm sending good news vibes your way.
Beth - Great news on the right drains gone!! Hope you are still taking it easy and feeling stronger every day. Isn't it nice when those men in our lives step up to be so great - John hates anything medical and was a rock for me during all my medical - makes me think that 20 years ago God knew I'd need him.....
Tricia - They are doing your surgery on a Saturday? That would have been nice - nothing gets done in our network unless its emergent on the weekend. Sending calm peaceful vibes your way. There was a great post about having the anesthesiologist say lots for positive things while you are under. I had my anesthesiologist say somethings to me as I went under and during the surgery and I swear it helped!!
My positive for Friday is
Its a 3 day weekend and we have no plans!! I'm going to garden, we'll take the girls out to see the fillies at our friends farm and I'm going to just kick back and relax.
Another positive is after a Choir Concert on Tuesday nite - I have my evenings back until the fall!! -
Beth, I'm glad to hear you are doing so well - and YAY for drains coming out! I swear, drains are the biggest PITA.
Jule, I hope your son gets better soon. And I'm glad to hear you have no side effects with Arimidex. It truly is a wonder drug for ER/PR+ gals. Thanks to Arimidex I have my mom by my side and I don't know what I'd do without her.
Good luck with your surgery, Tricia. I'm sure you will go through with flying colors.
Miss S, I'm crossing my fingers those lumps are nothing to worry about!
Made, yay for a relaxing gardening weekend!
My positive is that I got through my second round of A/C/T. Two down, four to go - I'm 1/3 of the way through treatments, woo HOO! And the Decadron they are giving me is making my closets as clean as can be. *g* -
I am glad to hear that everyone is doing well. It is 7 days till I get these "ticking time boobs off". My positive is yesterday I went to the PS for my pre-op and had the wonderful 'before' picts taken. Also my son's wonderful friend emailed me a poem she wrote for me and I felt it appropriate to share with everyone.
I could never imagine what your going through
but Gods in control and he cares for you.
He sees your pain your tears as they fall
look to your father in heaven on him you must call.
I know that sometimes life things don't seem fair
but God wouldn't put on you more then you can bare.
So just keep the "Faith" what ever you do
and know in Gods timing there a healing for you.
Hope all have a wonderful long weekend. I only work 2 1/2 days next week.
Sheila -
Hi ladies..... you were hiding from me! I must say that I think being a Positive Girl should start right at diagnosis (well, of course before that, but you know what I mean!). In fact, I have never browsed much in Moving Beyond Cancer, because I am in the midst of chemo, then I have rads, and a year of Herceptin. It will be nice to remain positive once I am moving beyond cancer, however. But I will search high and low for my positive sisters wherever you may be hidden. We will just have to keep on the lookout for people who need us and invite them to join us.
SO... I went to see my breast surgeon yesterday. She greeted me with a BIG hug. She is the sweetest thing in the world and I love her so much. Anyway, she was only concerned about one of the lumps (as was I) and she ended up taking it out. She said it looks like fatty necrosis, but has sent it off dutifully to the lab. I am pretty sure it's nothing BAD. Yay! She will take the stitches out next Thursday, but said she would call me immediately with any results.
Positives:
1. Fatty necrosis
2. FINALLY got an appointment with Lymphedema therapist.
3. Sunny weather
4. We were just moved and not deleted!
Sheila, glad your surgery is quickly approaching and the poem is lovely. God truly IS in control. It looks like Tricia will be right behind you. Perhaps you can exchange drain stories? Beth may even still have one in, too.
Crystal, congrats on 2 down and clean closets. I definitely need to make a dent in some housework this weekend. I have been SO lazy.
Kelly, sounds like a nice relaxing weekend spent with the ones you love. Can't beat that with a stick!
Beth, let us hear from you.... are you lost?
Jule, my bs didn't need kicking. But I sure do like to joke around with her. She has a great personality.
Hope everyong has a great weekend!!!
Miss S -
I'm so glad we were moved and not deleted!!! I started a thread on "Moving Beyond" after rads and it has helped tremendously. For all of you still in treatment Moving Beyond is a great place to see that there IS life after bc.
My positves for the week are:
I got thru a very tough week at work, with multiple people out and TONS to do.
I'm just about finished getting my patio set up for the summer. ( I really go crazy decorating it - DH thinks I'm crazy).
Most important - I got my boss to agree to do a "Jean Day" in June for the walk I am doing in August for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I hope to raise a lot of money.
Have a great weekend everyone,
Valerie -
So good to see everyone!
I gotta say, I think it was good to have this in the "Just Diagnosed" area, because that is when I needed to find it the most. When I was diagnosed, I stayed away from the internet for about a month because I thought it would worry me too much and just scare/depress me.
I have a "be positive" group of friends that I had before BC. I couldn't wait to tell them about this thread and you guys. Oh well...
Miss S, you are doing great! So glad the bumps were nothing bad.
Made, I was surprised they scheduled the surgery on a Saturday. This ps is highly regarded. When I called for an appointment, they told me end of August. When I said the onc surgeon referred me, they squeezed me in. I think both surgeons (they will tag team the surgery) reserve Saturdays for ladies like me. How nice. I will be about 3 months since dx by Saturday because of the wait time between appts., and of course doing the lumpectomy in late March which didn't work.
Anyway enjoy a relaxing weekend. I would love to go see the fillies with you.
Beth, how is you "no drain" life going?
Jule, thanks for your encouragement. I know you will keep me safe, and I can't tell you, and everyone here, how much I appreciate that.
Sheila, what a sweet poem. Looks like we can recover together.
Crystal, so glad you feeling better and that you have a wig you like. And you are 1/3 done! YAY!
Valerie, that is so cool that you are doing a walk for Lance Armstrong. I hope you raise a ton of money.
I am also enjoying a relaxing weekend. Doing some house work, running some errands, enjoying the weather.
Happy long weekend, everyone.
Tricia -
Well, as some may have heard, I was back in the hospital. I went in Wednesday night with a 103.9 fever. Turns out I have an ifection from surgery called MRSA. So, I came home Sat. afternoon with a PICC line, IV pump and Vancomycin to be infused twice a day. I feel tons better but still washed out. Good news is I am down to one drain on the left. Thanks for the pm's you guys, I relly felt good with the encouragement and support.
Hope this is the beginning of my road to recovery. I don't think I can take anohter round in the hospital....I have had it! But at elast i am cancer free and keep remindng myself of that.
Enjoy the holiday weekend. See you sometime next week and I hope to catch up on everyone. -
Beth,
So sorry to hear you're having a rough time. Here's hoping everything is onward and upward from here on out!
Miss S -
Oh Beth - I hadn't heard but I've been real bad about reading the 2 posts I regularly look at and jumping off. I'm glad you are feeling better and down to one drain. Please take it easy and get better!!
Sheila - is your surgery June 1st? I better start now sending great surgery vibes to you and Tricia!!
Miss S - yeah for fatty necrosis!! Hope the therapist helps!!
Valerie - decorating the outside is serious business - my dh just ignores me now
Tricia - glad you are having a nice relaxing weekend. I'm sending calming relaxing vibes to you for the week. Can you have your DH connect with someone from here so we know how your surgery goes?
My positive - weird as it is - is that it has rained for 2 days - so relaxing was the only option -
Good Morning ladies
Im posting my last weeks positives this week!!! (give you any idea how far behind I am with things!!!!)
1. Daughter and grandkids came for the weekend....had a blast and got lots of yard work done....with the last two surgeries I had some of the stuff got a little out of control....she is such a huge help!!!!
2. Son is not in quite as much pain now and it is looking like they will put a regular cast on tomarrow...but he will still be on crutches for 6 wks....no walking cast until after that..
3. Had a small bbq at my house for the 1st time this year for family & friends...very enjoyable....a few of my roses are blooming but not enough to make the yard smell pretty yet ....but they will soon enough
4: All my friends and family are well, safe and happy....the most important part for me .
Hope all of you enjoyed/relaxed on your long weekend....looking forward to hearing what everyone did....
Hugs
Jule
