Starting Chemo in JAN 2007

You all have had a busy weekend there are more posts than I can get through.
Mary my drain was out in 10 days. I might have even gotten it out a bit sooner but there was a long weekend involved. Ive had both a lumpectomy and a mastectomy and IMO those surgeries were a breeze compared to chemo! Be proactive with the pain meds, just take them, dont wait until you feel bad. Everyone says you are numb and there is not a lot of pain, but that was not my experience. I woke up in a lot of pain after the mastectomy (much more than the lumpectomy Id had 2 weeks prior). But it was totally manageable with the pain meds. I just wish that I had expected it. I hope everything goes smoothly.
Lynn I am so excited that you have tickets to Cirque. Ive seen them twice and LOVED both shows. Youll have a great time.
I had an interesting first this week. I was at my daughters riding lesson and just totally lost myself in the moment watching her. Completely forgot about the scarf, etc. Of course, that would be the moment that a woman walked up and told me about her husbands brain tumor. Great. One time I manage to forget about cancer and bam! Oh well, her intentions were great and her husband is cancer free and recovering from finishing chemo. I managed a similar moment at the dog park this weekend there was a big event there. I was just going along having a great time seeing all the dogs when I stumbled upon the Reach for Recovery booth and wondered why all the volunteers were giving me such big smiles oh, yeah, scarf reminder again.
My in-laws were here today. Wonderful, kind people but the WORST turtle faces Ive encountered so far. It made for a very long and uncomfortable day for me.
Back to work tomorrow and in for blood counts and the neulasta shot. Fun. -
Mary,
My experience with my mastectomy was not too bad at all. I had it on a Monday, went home Tuesday by noon, was out to dinner on Sunday night. I had one of those softee camisoles with the velcro drain pouches, and just wore a big zipup hoodie sweatshirt over it.
I agree about the pain meds - take them regularly those first days, and rest...
Good luck, we'll all be thinking good thoughts for you
Caya -
Jan, I know, I know, I still get the turtle faces as well. And since I'm through with chemo and feeling pretty good, I forget that I am still looking like a cancer patient and wonder why folks are smiling or looking sad, or staring at me. Someone always reminds me though--so thoughtful LOL!
However, I took my daughter and her friend to Blue Man Group yesterday (I highly recommend it) and we got the VIP treatment. I swear it was because the guy who seated us felt bad for me. The kids got to be a small part of the show. He escorted us to the employee bathrooms when the line was too long (whoopee!) and got the kids' pictures taken with one of the Blue Men. It was very cool but I really wonder if it was in part because of the scarf. I guess you have to work it if you can. -
Best of luck, Mary. Just think, after Tuesday, you're that much further done w/this whole process. I was very glad to have that part behind me.
Don't worry about the drains. They are so nothing...you'll be used to them in two days. Don't worry about being a rocket scientist, measuring the exact exact amt... it's kind of like when you have a newborn and you freak out with the first one...did I pour exactly five ounces into that bottle, etc. After a while you just kind of wing it and you get through...
I'll be thinking of you! -
Had a "cancer free" day today. We drove down to the Hocking Hills in OH to check it out. Nice, sunny day and pretty scenery but the area is def. not for us. Not much there. We then checked out the most gorgeous condos, brand new...called Heron Bay, on Buckeye Lake. The surrounding town was so decrepit...no thank you. Hillbilly central. Saving my $ for that Ft. Laud. or Boca condo....my after cancer goal.
Lynn, did you see Sopranos tonight? The shower scene was just disgusting. A pathetic attempt at getting people to talk about the show...like bad attention is better than no attention. ICK! -
Mary, I had my mastectomy on a Monday, had the drain out on Friday of that same week. The worse part of it was taking a shower. Good luck on Tuesday, we'll be thinking of you!
Tina, yes, that shower scene was so gross..yuck!
Joni, great pic of the linx, I have pictures of 2 bobcats playing in my backyard. I named them Bob and Katy! I guess I should check out those website where you can put pictures, that's how you can post them here, right?
Jan, which Cirque's did you see?
Amera and Viddie, see you tomorrow! -
Remember, Lynn, Amera, and Viddie - you all take your cameras and post some pictures for us. Wish we could all be there with you.
Amera, maybe it was your scarf, maybe it was because you and the kids were so cute - who knows? Sounds like you got some special treatment anyway. I'll bet that was a really fun concert - I've always wanted to see them. My family in Kansas all just went to see them a couple weeks ago, and they loved it. But anyway, as much as I don't like the turtle faces and all that, we might as well get some good out of this experience, so if the scarf gets you personal attention from BMG and use of the employee bathroom, then great.
Mary, I'll be thinking about you tomorrow and Tuesday. For you, tomorrow will probably be the hard day. I'm sure you'll do well with the surgery.
Night, everybody.
Mel -
TPP - I can relate to that analogy about the newborn. I was really scared bringing that baby home!
Lynn - re the shower, my surgeon suggest using the oxygen tubing to put in the shower to rest your drains on. Not sure exactly how that works but I guess I will find out.
I didn't sleep great last night and I'm sure tonight will be worse. I guess I'll stay up late for that Red Wings game.
Thanks for all of your wishes. I agree, I'll be glad to get this part over with. Of all my drs, I have the most confidence in my surgeon. SHE is the greatest. -
Mary Hang in there! I really think the worst part of the surgery was the anticipation. I got so freaked the night before and the morning of that they gave me meds for it. I took a Xanax the night before, and they gave me valium when I was waiting for it all to start. I hate to rely on such things, but it really did help. My subjective experience of the surgery itself was that no time passed at all between when a voice said "you are going to sleep now" and when I was in recovery. It was eerie. As for post op...the rest of your sisters have pretty much said it all! I had my drains for about 10 days. I was on my feet the next day walking up and down the hospital hallway. Be proactive with your meds...take them before it starts to hurt....and stay moving. Oh, and your surgeon gave your permission to shower?!?! Lucky stiff...I had a strict dry dressing. NO SHOWERS for 10 days YECK!!!!!!!! That was absolutely the worst part. It was during that time that I got my short haircut because I could not stand it. Make sure you use your arm, too...there are stretches and exercises to do, and you will get your mobility back quick. I had full movement back within about a month (my surgeon was impressed...but Iw as determined!)
You will be fine! We love you all love you, and I will be thinking of you. -
Mary - good luck tomorrow, you will be fine. I had a female surgeon too, very kind, and I felt very safe with her. Makes a big difference.
Jan - congratulations on your "cancer-free" moments! They are priceless.
We are headed to the coast tomorrow for 5 days. We'll walk and eat and shop and hopefully see some dolphins.
Went shopping on the weekend for carpet and a sectional sofa for the basement. DH has it just about done - we've been in the house 10 years and it's small on the main floor, so this is very exciting!
Went out for lunch with dh's sister and husband yesterday. She cares, but seems to always say something! This time we were talking about work, and I commented on how stressfull my previous job was - she says, yes, it gave you cancer! She also commented that my daughter (a single mom) is SO lucky that Lilly's dad is so involved with her - they trade off child care so as to not need day care etc. I said, well he is her Dad, but she wouldn't leave it - said, yes but many guys would just walk away. Not sure what her point was. Oh well, have to let it go. I feel that it lets me know what she really thinks though.
Anyway, we're off. The hair is growing daily, I now have a "cap" of hair, but it still lays flat. Curious to see how curly it will be.
Hope all have a great week! -
Lynn I saw O in Vegas and Varekai when it was in town here. Both were amazing. I would go to Vegas again just to see O (and I hate Vegas). The performers are so talented. I enjoyed every single aspect of the shows the music, costumes, production, etc. I have heard great things about the show in Orlando. You'll love it!
-
Mary good luck you will be fine . I had a woman surgeon too and she was great . I was just back from the OR when she gave the nurses heck because i had a liquid dinner tray . "you get my patient some FOOD this will not do !" Se needs to eat ! ..... now how are you dear ? I had my drain in for abut 10 days and a home care nurse took it out .
I am finally starting to come around had a rough weekend seems the taxotere does add up each time . My fingernails are very brittle and hurt ,typing carefully . Also my mouth looks like a fish , wavy on the edges , pasty , i could not taste much . yuck . Fatigue set in big time and the fog was dense beddy byes for me all day Sunday . No more though hope this doesn't last too much longer ..... need my brain back .
Off to get checked up for menopause today make sure that I am actually done and get tested , check in with my family doctor and go over all my past results . Now I am going to have to get blood drawn from my veins as only special chemo nurses can draw blood from my port , expecting to keep that in for a year and have to get it flushed every 5 weeks .
Good going gals on the shopping looks like we are all getting new furniture , rooms , and stuff .
Have a great day everyone . -
Dar have a great trip!!!
Mary, good luck tomorrow. The drains are a no biggy after about Day 2. I had showers, but I covered by mastectomy with saran wrap, and I also used safety pins to attach my drains to my shampoo holder. That way they were out of my way, and I never had to worry about them. As I do not have a sit down shower, my huband bought me a little stool to put inside the shower.
Shorti, hope you are feeling better this week, and good luck with your blood draws.
This week is my MRI and my radiation simulation so I'm a bit nervous. Another week of scansiety.
Jan, are you feeling better yet from #5?
When I bought my new oven (convection) I asked the salesman, what does it do extra? He says it really helps with your baking. I told him the only time I bake is when I'm on a beach! C'est la vie!!
Amera, I saw the Blue Man Group down in Vegas at the Venetian last September....very different!!
Tina, glad to hear you have the house to yourself for a while. I have lots of company coming this summer, with my nephew's wedding being right during the Calgary Stampede, alot of the relatives from out of town are all coming. I have my twin nieces and their S.O.'s coming, also, my nephew from Taiwan and his girlfriend, and several relatives from the Maritimes. Oh, well it should be a great time...hopefully lot of BBQ's.
Have a great day everyone....Hugs to all...especially you Mary with your upcoming surgery...I may even take my hex off the Red Wings for you tonite.
Love to all.....Joni -
Feel better Shorti! My nails are a mess too from the taxotere....black splotches, red lines, ridges and PAIN. yuck. I just hope they do not fall off...one of them looks pretty iffy...I am crossing my fingers.
In in the meantime I just got an envelope from motor vehicles...my driver's lic is due for renewal this summer. AAARRRGGGHHH a picture of me in a scarf on my drivers lic for the next fouryears. Just when i thought I would be able to move past it I will have a reminder in my pocket at all times. Ah well.
Hope you are all ahving a good day! -
Thanks to everyone who has asked about me. I am feeling better. Just got back from the oncs office getting labs done. All my blood counts are the lowest they have been so far. Have had the shot for both white and red cells as of today - so hopefully they will start going up soon. Meanwhile I'll keep trying to avoid the strep throat that has been going around my daughter's classroom. I am feeling OK - just tired as usual. I haven't been able to sleep much, but otherwise OK. Trying to get some work done this week, but my appointment for blood counts this morning took an hour and a half - don't know why they were so busy.
Rebecca - what a bummer about the driver's license picture! That stinks. -
QUOTE: I may even take my hex off the Red Wings for you tonite.
LOL! -
Thanks girls for all of your support. I will offer my suffering up for you, all of you still going through chemo, tests and rads. My showers are very short lately --- there's no hair to wash!!! Joni, I guess I will stay up late and try to watch the Red Wings especially since you've taken the hex off. I am not too hopeful in this series but we'll see.
Re the convection oven, it also does roasts very well, especially if you have the convection roast button. I am still trying to figure mine out.
I will post as soon as I can! -
Good evening ladies -
We had lovely weather here yestereday, DH and I went tree shopping and bought and then planted some evergreens and a weeping mulberry tree in our front garden - too cold here to plant annual flowers yet, usually we wait until around May 10 - 15th. I'm looking forward to having some pretty colourful flowers soon.
DD #1 is writing her last exam for the school year as I write and will be home later this evening... really looking forward to seeing her.
A dear friend is stopping by to see me tomorrow for lunch. Every year she does the Relay for Life Cancer run, and this year she is honoring me. It is a night long relay run that she does with a team of about 10 people, they do a survivor's lap first. My friends and family have been donating money online - Debbie (my friend) posted that she wanted to raise $800, she's way over that already. She's coming by tomorrow to take my picture so she can wear it on her T-shirt- I am going to pose bald.
Robertin - congrats on the weight loss - you've inspired me to get cracking and lose it too - I've gained about 10 lbs. since dx -
Mizsissy - how's your nephew doing, the one that was hurt?
Skye - how was your trip to New Glaus- sounds like a real cute town...
Jan - glad you are feeling better.
Rebecca - I wasn't allowed to shower either with my drains ins - like it was 2 frigging weeks of sponge bathing.. I also did my exercises religiously and had pretty well full mobility by around 5 weeks.
Dar - ah , the inlaws, what can I say? it's always something -
Shorti, Rebecca - my nails have not been too bad yet on Taxotere - I've been putting on clear nail hardener, maybe this is helping.
Joni - good luck on your MRI and rad simulation.
Lynn, Amera,Viddie,- okay, we're all waiting for those pictures.
The taxman cometh - but he owes me - we are all getting refunds. YIPPEE!! Some retail therapy is definitely in order.
And finally, good luck Mary - you'll do great.
hugs to all

Hello all:
Getting Back in Shape
I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape,
so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.
I decided to take an aerobics class.
I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down and perspired for an hour.
But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. ;(
Joni -
Hey ladies,
Mary, I'll be waiting with everyone else to hear how things go tomorrow. Sounds like you've had lots of good advice from everyone who has been there.
Caya, I am also planning to put a weeping mulberry in the front yard. I LOVE those! Although like TPPJ we are looking at condos. Both the dh and I are feeling kind of vulnerable after our dx's, and thinking of taking care of an acre lot and a house that we close four rooms off in winter just seems like so much right now. But first we need a new roof.
Also, that is really special that your friend is honoring you in the walk. There is one in Milwaukee next Saturday and the dh and I are thinking of going just to hang around "our people."
Dar, sympathy on the in-laws. Family members are always the ones who know how to get to us best, God love 'em.
We had a great day in New Glarus, it's a totally Swiss-themed town, complete with people in Swiss folk dress walking around. Of course we ate fried brick cheese curds at the outdoor Swiss beer garden, it's mandatory. I know I gained a pound from that. Sitting there, I said to the dh that I felt almost normal. He said, "You LOOK almost normal." :-) I did find out that my wig is pretty comfortable in 80-degree weather.
I had my Herceptin today and did not get a rash or reaction, even without Benadryl. I did get increased bone pain, and found out I had low rbc but had Aranesp last week so couldn't get one today. All seems minor though compared to chemo.
The sad thing today was finding out a young woman I've gotten to know in the chemo room (the one whose sister does the imitations of turtle faces) is going to have to undergo a second round of chemo and this time she'll lose her hair. She doesn't know yet because she doesn't want to; her sister told me. She's a single mom with a six-year old and a 12-year old and has mets from cervical cancer first dx when she was 23. Anyway, I think Taffy could use prayers if anyone is willing. - Skye -

Hi everyone,
Amera, Lynn and I had a great time at lunch today. We met at california pizza. We found each other rather easily- with our scarves of course. It was lots of fun and laughs. I took one picture and since I am technically challenged, perhaps I can e-mail Joni, and if she does not mind, she can post it.
Mary, good luck tomorrow with your surgery.
Jan & Shorti, I am glad you are feeling better.
Dar, have a great time at the coast.
Rebecca, In Mass, we can renew once on the web and they will use our old picture. Is there a possibility you can do that?
Catch you all later,
Viddie -
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow and sending positive thoughts and prayers for a safe surgery and quick, uneventful recovery!
Hugs from Iowa...
Cindy -
Guys,
I showered w/my drains in the hospital. How odd that we all get diff. info. I wore a long necklace and there was a little tab on the bulb part of each drain. I'd stick a safety pin through the tabs and hang them from the long necklace. That way they wouldn't hang/drag in the shower and the weight of them hanging wouldn't be pleasant either. It was a convenient way to get around w/the drains. Like a big, ugly necklace. By day, I'd usually wear hoodies and put the bulbs of each drain in my pockets. If out, I'd have a coat on because it was cool weather. Harder to disguise in summer. -
Skye, the Swiss town sounds cool. Have you ever seen Solvang, CA? It looks like a Dutch village. No people in costume, but.... it's really pretty. It's north of L.A., in the San Luis Obispo area.
-
Viddie, are all three of you in Western Mass?
-
Viddie, three of you in scarves...power in solidarity! It must have been great. I would have loved to be there. Looking forward to seeing the pic. Amera and Lynn, can you share any more?
Rebecca, that is just too ironic about your driver's license photo. The ultimate worst photo in the world anyway. That suggestion about seeing if you can use your old one sounds like a great idea if it works in your state. Or can you beg borrow or steal a wig similar to your hair? - Skye -
