Starting Chemo in JAN 2007

Hi everyone,
I've been really tired today - woke up okay, then around 1:00 the fatigue just overwhelmed me - this is the nadir of the Taxotere for s/e - I know my platelets are low because last night when I blew my nose it was bloody - not just the usual little clots... so this afternoon I slept for about 2 hours, then dragged myself to get dressed, made up ( ah yes - the eyebrow pencil), put on my curly wig and went to my mother's for dinner. It was great, too bad I can hardly taste anything.
Mary - I recovered from my mastectomy amazingly well. I had it on a Monday, (with 16 nodes taken), and was out to dinner the following Sunday. Take all the drugs they give you, I had Tylenol 3s when I came home.
Re: sleeping - I have been on Imovane 7.5 mg. for about 2 years - yeah, I'm probably addicted, but all my docs don't seem to care right now, as they all say I need the rest - I used Ativan for anxiety when first diagnosed, but hardly had to use it in the past 2 -3 months. I know many of you use it for nausea and/or sleeping. I think if you need it, use it, at least to get through the chemo, rads etc. whatever...
Jan, I'm with you on the chemo fog...
Shorti - I know what you mean, I get up with great plans for the day, thinking I'm okay - but ha ha hey hey - like the major exhaustion wave hits me... have fun kayak shopping
Tomorrow we're going to our accountant for our income taxes - oh that should be alot of fun. I might need one of those ativans...
Amera - what was your hair like before BC - was it dark blonde (looks that way from your picture) - thick, thin - mine was like my avatar pic when I had it blown dry straight - but normally it was curly and pretty thick - very interested to see what I'll get - my onc. says I'll be "blonde" (greay) at this point I'll be happy to just have some hair.
Around the house I usually wear little cotton caps that are trimmed with a wide stretch lace band, (this keeps it from slipping off). At first my DD didn't want to see me bald, but I do take the caps off sometimes, and she's gotten used to it. I really don't care what other people think - when they are going through what I am going through, then they can talk. Obviously I never go bald in public, although with the hotter weather coming up, I might.
I hope everyone else is okay, hopefully I'll be more lucid tomorrow so I can respond to more of the posts...

Cindy, it must be discouraging to think about more treatments, but I agree with your coworker; you do have a doctor who cares and plans to cure you. I love to bike ride too, that's what my husband and I usually do together on Sundays. And it takes the cares away ...
So I have had this recurring problem of not asking for help. Now that I am having trouble with blood counts and am really anxious to stay on track with my chemo, I have asked my husband to take over the grocery shopping. I find that chore to be overwhelming even when I am healthy, but I have traditionally done it. He is happy to to do it and tries hard. One thing I love is spinach, and I usually buy frozen whole leaf, microwave it, put some vinegar on it, and munch away. So I had four pkgs of spinach on the list. He came home with four big bags of fresh; it takes up the whole crisper drawer. I guess I will be sauteing spinach this week! I am learning that I need to be very specific with the list.
I hope all sleep well tonite, with whatever aid it takes to do that!

I don't know how to post a picture here - I would be happy to post a pic of my son if someone could tell me how!
I also do not go bald around the house (unless I'm home alone and I keep my wig handy in case someone comes to the door! My 11 yr old daughter does not want to see me bald - she looked once, and that was it. My DH doesn't mind at all, but I do!
He told me I still looked beautiful - my eyes are still the same he said!! Made me feel better for sure! -
Amera -
I have horses, so I cannot wear my "good" wig to the barn, or it will "smell"!! My DH doesn't really enjoy me smelling like my horse all the time! So, I bought a cheaper wig online - it looks very wiggy on my head, BUT I found that I can pull it back into a ponytail and put on a baseball hat and it looks very natural!! Having horses, I have always pulled back my hair and wore a baseball hat, so everyone thinks it's just my real hair! My friends who know what's going on with me says it looks just like normal!! Something to consider until your real hair grows back! -

Ha! Melia, I have to be *very* specific about groceries, right down to the location in the store and color of the container. It always amazes me that my husband could live with me for 15 years and have no idea what kind of milk I've been buying every single week. LOL! Sometimes making the list takes more time and effort than going to the store myself. At least they're trying :9 -
Caya, hope you have more energy today. Good luck at the accountant's. Jan, hugs to you, hope you're feeling better. TPP- I never knew so many people who wanted to visit Columbus! Amera, I can relate to the impatience re the hair. I keep checking daily. My eyebrows even look thinner now. Melia, I have the same problem when I ask my DH to do the grocery shopping. It's a good idea to add brand names in too. Actually I like grocery shopping, it's the carrying the groceries into the house and putting them away that I don't like. Cindy, I hope you get a definitive answer on your rads.
Well got to get going on cleaning the house, doing laundry. Somehow I feel I have to have my house perfect before my surgery Tuesday. Well at least it keeps my mind off of it for awhile. -
Good morning all!
Mary, good luck with your surgery. I agree, it is a good idea to have someone stay overnight if possible. My husband offered and I said no - regretted it! I had to go to the bathroom about 10 times due to the IVs steroid etc, and had to wait for the nurse to put the leg thingys on and off. Also, ask for the max. allowed pain killer even if you don't take it all at once. You'll be fine and probably not in too long - home is better.
Melia, lol about the grocery shopping! My husband too would not question that I would want 4 big bags of spinach all at once!
Caya, Jan, hope you are feeling better today.
I don't wear a wig at home and after the first week or so DH got used to it. Now that I have a little hair, I'm leaving it off more and more - I'm protective of my hair! I plan on a very short cut, so people might as well get used to it. I had a hot flash at yoga yesterday and took off my scarf - nobody fainted and I felt much better. My eyebrows are back, lashes are paler than they were for some reason. Don't wear the wig while BBQing - my daughter's friend did that, with unfortunate results (she's OK, but the wig isn't).
I'm feeling very anxious - I feel like a horse at the gate who doesn't want to go! Back to work, back to "normal" life. Maybe I just want to curl up and lick my wounds awhile longer.
Peace to all. -
Cindy I do think your friend is wise and that your doctor is a good one to insist on double-checking. This really is the only time to get it right. I'm very glad myself that I'm not having rads til the other stuff is all done, it would have been too much for me. Bad enough that once a week I'll have to drive 35 minutes east to get Herceptin, then come back and drive the same distance west and back to get rads. But the rads GREATLY reduce recurrence odds when they are indicated useful on a case. We will just have more excuses to lounge around during the warm months. - Skye

Mary,
I do think you will find that the surgery is much easier than everything else you have been thru. I only had a left mastectomy, but had full axillary dissection (34 nodes) and that was what was uncomfortable. I took vicadin for two days and then a couple more times before bed, but as long as no one slapped me on the back or bumped me, I was fine. Are you having bilateral? What about nodes? (sorry I can't remember stuff these days). I am not minimizing how unpleasant the whole surgery/hospital thing is, just don't want you to be more worried than you need to be.

CONGRATS, SKYE, ON THE GOOD ECHO SCORES. I FOUND OUT THAT MY MAY ONE WAS 53 AND MY FEB. WAS 55. THEY TOLD ME IF IT GOT DOWN TO LOW 40'S, IT'D BE AN ISSUE FOR HERCEPTIN.
MIZSISSY, READING YOUR ATIVAN WARNINGS. SKYE, LOL'ING ABOUT YOU'RE NOT REALIZING ATIVAN WAS LORAZEPAM. ANYWAY, I FELT LIKE CRAPOLA TODAY AFTER NO ATIVAN YESTERDAY. TOOK IT TODAY AND FEEL GOOD. HMMMMM.... I MAY NEED TO START THE WEANING PROGRAM. MIZSISSY, YOU'VE GOT ME PARANOID. ACTUALLY, ONE OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS IS IN NURSING SCHOOL AND SHE LOOKED UP ATIVAN AND SAID IT'S HIGHLY ADDICTIVE, ETC...
Hey TPPJ, congrats back to you on your good scores. And yes, that's pretty classic that I'm taking Ativan w/o knowing! The nurse just told me it was another anti-nausea and I never thought more about it or asked the onc. And I research things for a living! I constantly have to remind myself, since the first shock of dx, that I can't just be a good girl and swallow all the pills and take everything for granted. But I feel dull-brained so much of the time it just doesn't always register. I wonder if I have a much smaller dose however because it doesn't do that much for me, last night I still woke up every 2 hours. Think I will just fuggedaboutit.
Eyebrows...mine are still the same color, what's left. They are about half of what they started out as but I've realized I look better with them really well-plucked. My lashes are barely hanging in there, I have just enough that if I put on liner and a little mascara the difference isn't too noticeable. I only do that for dress up because I'm afraid to mess with them too much. I know the effects of Taxol linger and I could still lose them.
Amera, it's so encouraging to know you do have new hair growth. It helps me know I won't be bald forever even if I feel that way right now. - Skye -
Hello gals,
I thought we should revisit this again...I had a time finding the last one. I think I'd like to put this on a web page so I don't have to hunt for it; it would sure be nice if we had a page somewhere that we each could update

Hey Ladies, I couldn't resist pointing out we have reached 100 pages on this thread! Lots of laughs, tears, info and sisterly love packed in all these posts. I am most grateful to you all. - Skye

I am having a left mastectomy also with nodes. I could have had a sentinel node biopsy before chemo (because after chemo you can't do it) but I told them just to take all of the nodes to be safe. One part of the lobular cancer goes close to my underarm and there is one node that felt suspicious to the surgeon. The other part of the lobular that I could feel is near the center of the chest. They are going to do lymphatic mapping so they can see which nodes the tumors are feeding to. As I understand it they don't like to go after the nodes close to the lungs (center of the chest?) so as not to nick the lungs. I plan to be back outside walking after my drains are out and biking after two weeks - do you think that is realistic since I bike now 6 days a week for an hour at the gym? I am not sure when I can go back to lifting weights. My surgeon just said to take it gradually and I am afraid of overdoing it and getting lymphadema. Usually I lift weights two to three times a week at the gym.

ooohhh the heartburn!! Did anyone else have severe heartburn while on taxol? They give me tagamet in the pre-meds and I have a protonix to take but shoot, I am in agony. This morning I took 4 tums, drank some milk, still couldn't stand it and found an old prilosec in the med. cabinet and took it. I may need to see a gastro DR. after this, my insides may be burned up. YuK. I fell asleep in the chair during taxol yesterday, never done that I am usually hyped up, came home and slept some more. Weird.
may the chemo room laugh yesterday. the nurse asked me how low my port was. I said "huh? it's right there". and she said "well I wanted you to show this man what the ports looked like without showing your boob". I said "huh? I don't have any boobs". I had her so flustered, and the room was tickled. She told me if I didn't straighten up they would put me in the quiet room. Bad news there.. thats the room with no TV! So I straightend up showed the dude my port. ( No it didn't turn him on ): he fell asleep too. 1st Friday in June should be my last Taxol..Yes!!!
Probably just read posts next few days as I typically crash tomorrow and Monday is the pits. Be well my friends! -
Ativans are highly addictive, but you CAN get off them. You should try this when you are no longer getting chemo, and can exercise everyday. Exercise a great stress reliever, and will also help you sleep.
First, taper off the ativan; you may need extra weeks here:- Week 1, 1/2 pill each night to sleep (do not skip)
- Week 2, 1/4 pill each night to sleep (do not skip)
- Day 15 Take a 1/2 dose of an antihistamine (benadryl, zyrtec) if needed for sleep
- Day 16 Try to sleep w/o a pill. If you need one, take a pill, but something different from Day 15 (I took a darvocet).
- Day 17 Milk and Ibuprofen or Aspirin or Tylenol, if needed. Warm the milk if you can. Milk has a lot of tryptophan which makes you sleepy. If you can't drink milk, try turkey, which has even more tryptophan.

So much for the secretarial work...now for the catching up..
Melinda...how are you and where are you?!!! You were in horrendous shape when you last posted and we'd like some news..
Mary...getting a mastectomy is terrifying, physicaly and emotionally, but if it's only a mastectomy with no reconstruction, it will practically be a piece of cake I think, especially with the kind of physical shape you are in. The only uncomfortable part will be lymph nodes; I had 11 removed and it took a few weeks for my arm to feel normal again. Are you ever going to do reconstruction?
Cindy...do the radiation if you're having second thoughts..It's really easy, and nothing to worry about, except NOT doing it!!!
Continuing chemo gals Nancy, Jan, Caya, Skye, Lynn...hope you're not feeling too foggy or tired..the end is in sight!!
As for me, I've finally caught up on my sleep after a week of being very tired. I've had an ongoing problem with heart rhythm and am getting checked out next week; I think it is either the taxotere or radiation that is causing it. Fortunately, it doesn't interfere with exercise and goes away when I sleep and eat well...
Am hoping to talk to Mena today to see how she's doing; you're prayers REALLY helped!!!
Love to all xxxooo Mizsissy -
Hi Ladies,
Wow, tons of posts to catch up on.
Mary, I had a right breast mastectomy and I don't think I could have been riding a bike 2 weeks later. I only had sentinal node and had trouble keeping my arm on the desk to use the mouse after 2 weeks. One of the problems is your arm is numb from about the elbow up to your shoulder. Well, mine was both numb and painful. As for the actual surgery, I had pain the first few days but nothing the perocet didn't take care of. The Dr. and nurses said to take 2 every 4 hours and not to let the pain happen. I did that for 3 days, then only took the perc at night to take the edge off. We will all be there with you in spirit!
I think I have eyebrows growing in. Also, my dh has been shaving my head about every 2 weeks and when it came back in, it was white and very scarce. This time, there's a lot more fullness and actually some color. No more shaving for me. Although I do have one more tx, so it might all fall back out again. I'm ready for hair.
Mel, I have some water retention as well. Boy, it sure wasn't fun shopping for a bathing suit yesterday. There I was, standing in the dressing room at the mastectomy shop, bald and fat. So I got a tankini where the bottom has a skirt on it. DH laughed thinking it was like back in the 50s or something. I do think they are coming back and are quite stylish, right ladies?
I walk around the house bald all the time, my daughter and dh are used to it. Dh keeps telling me how cute I look.
Nancy, lol about the nurse disciplining you. I occassionally get heartburn, not sure when, no rhyme or reason. Rolaids usually works for me.
Caya, Jan and Nancy, hope you are feeling better. Also anyone else I might have missed.
Happy Saturday! -
Mizsissy,
Isn't Viddie on the same 12 taxols as I am? I think we have nearly the same schedule.
Thanks so much for doing all the record keeping, very kind of you. I hope your heart checks out ok. And thanks for the hints re getting off antivan. I will deal with it in July when the taxol is done.
It would be fun to have everyone's stats if ladies are comfy with that. I had idc, 4 cm, clear nodes (34, ouch), stage 2. Left mastectomy on Dec 11, no reconstruction planned.

TPP- I never knew so many people who wanted to visit Columbus!
YOU AND ME BOTH, MARY!!! DON'T BE FOOLED...THESE ARE THE FIRST VISITORS I'VE HAD SINCE I GOT HERE NEARLY FIVE YEARS AGO..ASIDE FROM MY PARENTS. -
Mizsissy,
Those Ativans are so tiny, I can't believe you able to cut them into quarters. -
Lynn, I love tankini's... been wearing those for a few years now.
-
Mary,
I had a lumpectomy, not a mast, but I was running within a week; I had to wear a very tight bra and hold my chest, mainly cause the surgery boob was jiggling around, so I guess I looked kind of funny running with folded arms. That is not a problem biking. It might even be easier with a total mast.
Nancy, that's a funny story about being scolded by the nurse! Was she for real!!!
Mizsissy -
Got my script for the Tamoxifen. She didn't say and I didn't think to ask - does anyone know if AM or PM is better?
CINDY, I HEARD IT COULD POSSIBLY, AND I STRESS---POSSIBLY, CAUSE NAUSEA SO TAKING IT AT NIGHT WAS A GOOD IDEA. HOWEVER, IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO TAKE, I DIDN'T WANT TO RISK FORGETTING IT OR FALLING ASLEEP BEFORE TAKING IT SO I FIGURED I'D TRY IT OUT DURING THE DAY AND IF IT DIDN'T GO WELL, I'D CHANGE TO NIGHT. I'VE BEEN ON IT ABOUT FIVE DAYS NOW AND I'VE HAD NO SIDE EFFECTS...TAKING IT LATE MORNING. -
Ok, I'm mad! I just wrote a big old long post, and when I hit continue it vanished! Don't know why that happens, but surely they could fix that problem somehow. Ok, now I'll try it again...but if it happens again, at least you know I'm alive. Yesterday I wasn't so sure I'd live to see today.
Mel -
Yesterday I did manage to drag my bloated self out to lunch with a few of my bc sisters, and had a wonderful time. By the time we were done, however, I could hardly walk, was short of breath, and had a hard time bending my legs to get into the car. Also removed my shoes, and then there was no way I could get them back on. I was still clutching my bottle of Lasix, and waiting to hear from my internist, who called on the way home to tell me that my echocardiogram and cxr were perfectly normal, and that I could go ahead and take the lasix. So I took one as soon as I got home (afraid to take one in the car because I was expecting instant massive diuresis - no such luck!). I lay around all evening WAITING for something to happen, too miserable to eat or drink or post anything. Finally at bedtime, I took another Lasix, and I think I may have gotten up to pee one time during the night. No big deal. At 5:00 am I took two more, and went back to sleep. When I finally woke up, I was better - I can bend my legs, I can walk without being short of breath, and although I am still swollen, I'm pretty sure it's better. So...I think I'm going to live. The problem is, we still don't know exactly what caused the problem. I still lean toward thinking it's the taxol, even if the worst of it did happen AFTER my last treatment.
Lynn, oh, Lynn, I got anxiety just reading about your swimsuit shopping! You're a braver woman than I am. I think that is something I just won't be doing this year.
Nancy, I had the heartburn with taxol. I was already on Nexium for GERD, and they gave me something during my taxol treatments (sorry, chemobrain deleted memory of what drug it was), and then I added in Zantac at bedtime. That pretty much took care of it, but still I had an occasional heartburn breakthrough.
I'm going to hit Continue before this post gets snatched away. Everyone have a wonderful weekend.

I have created an online spreadsheet with all of our info:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pgjYG95q8xXARUQK7TjhrLQ
if you PM me your email address I will put you on the list of collaborators so that you can all make changes to your data (I think ) -
You can cut Ativans into quarters with a pill cutter; yes they are tiny. But I'll tell you those quarters are potent. My body knew when I missed 'em!
-
Well, I'm feeling better today. My accountant called and says he needs more time to work on our taxes, so the visit is postponed until tom. morning - I don't know if this is a good or bad sign, but I'll be bringing my checkbook.
Melinda - sounds like you've had quite the ordeal with your welling and heartburn - hope you feel better today.
Cindy - Your onc. is being very thorough and right on the money - you want to fight this beast now - you'll get through rads, we will all be here to commiserate with.
Tina - hope your company doesn't overwhelm you. Don't panic about the Ativan - it's not like you're taking 3 a day, every day are you? You can wean off when ready, but right now your body needs it - it's part of the process.
dar - hope you're less anxious today. I think we would all like our "normal" life back - but of course there will be a "new normal" for all of us now.
Mary - I wouldn't plan on doing ANYTHING until you see your surgeon for the post-op visit - One of my drains didn't come out for 2 weeks, and only then could I start doing the post-op exercises ( my hospital gave me a post-op booklet with the exercises and other info in it) - I also saw the hospital physical therapist and she advised me not to do any weight lifting or any repetitive movement stuff (like vacuuming, ironing) with my right arm for a while- I had 16 nodes removed, you have to be very vigilant about lymphodema.
Skye - I also noticed we're over 100 pages - congrats to us all , and thanks for the support ladies... I think we have such a nice group- Also congrats on your good heart tests - great to know the ticker is in fine form.
Melia and Amera - I had to laugh at your DH shopping stories and add one of my own . I sent DH out with the list, and the only thing he gets frustrated with is yogurt - because I give him so many specifics - low fat, no aspartame, stirred ( not fruit bottom), probiotic - the poor guy calls me from the supermarket and says - there are like 50 different yogurts here, I can't meet all your specifics - so I laughed and told him to fuggetaboutit... and sent DD out to get it...
One more thing - I've had about 5 marketing calls today - The Weed Man, Consumer Survey Review, the Shriner's Circus, etc. - like, is my phone number highlighted or something?
have a good one everybody...
caya -
Rebecca this is terrific!!!
I've gone there & tried to edit my stuff but it won't let me yet. I'll be happy to help you get this updated.
Mizsissy -
Mizsisy, I am going to wait until after mastectomy and radiation to decide about reconstruction. I don't know if I really want to go through more right now
TPP - I think we were in Columbus once - don't you have a COSI science center? That was nice although he got very lost (darn mapquest).
Nancy, re the heartburn. Try to take the meds first thing in the morning about 1/2 hour before you eat or drink anything. They work better on an empty stomach.
Luckymel, sorry you are so bloated. I was starting to feel that way at the end of Taxol too but it seems to have gone alway and my body is going back to normal.
Rebecca, do I have to establish a Google account to get into the spreadsheets?
Lynn, All I wear is Takinis but I didn't know they had a name. I have big legs and they are comfortable.
Caya, thanks for the warning about taking it easy after surgery. That will be hard for me to do. All of you will have to keep warning me. When I was talking about biking, I was talking about a stationary bike. You don't have to steer and I can move the handlebars up high. It is almost all lower body work.
Joni, are you putting a jinx on the Red Wings?
Re sun -- a guy at work whose wife was on a lot of meds (had a quadruple transplant - heart, two lungs and a liver) said that the meds make you more prone to sunburn and the sunburn makes you more prone to skin cancer. So I guess we need to be careful. His wife had olive complexion and never burned but she really burned if she was in the sun after being on the meds.
