Mom newly diagnosed
I'm new to the discussion boards. My mother was just diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma (believed to be stage I). My father had acute myloid leukemia & is almost 6yrs post bone marrow transplant. I'm an oncology nurse. I see and care for others. Still, it's not the same to have it happen in the family, especially for a second time.

My mother was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer just today. She is going on Friday to discuss her options with a Radiologist & Oncologist. She will have to decide between a lumpectomy and 6 weeks of radiation 5 days a week or a mastectomy. I am scared for her and a little nervous. I don't really know what to expect.

Best wishes to both of you, and to your Moms! I know this is a nasty disease and a really scary time, but it sounds like both got caught early - Stage I is very treatable!
It truly hits home when it's your own mother - no matter if they are 38 or 88, we like to believe they are impervious to illness or injury. Guess now you get a chance to really return some of that care she gave you.

Hi I too am new to all this , my mom was diagnosed on Feb 1 and last wed had a bilateral masectomy and now we are healing. So, as someone who has a few weeks in and I just found this place today myself and wish i would have found it earilier. BE THERE all the way and it will get harder but be strong and you will get through it. I can not beleive I have made it this far , everything will move VERY fast and you will need to educate yourself on almost everything. And things are getting better. I need to cry and just let it all out I am trying to keep it togther for my mom, dad, daughter myslef but I can feel myself getting weak, Knowing that we are all here going through this and here for one another I feel will benefit me and I hope all of you as well. Like I said I am new at this as well but if you g=have any questions please ask. Hold on tight you are in for the ride of your life but it does slow down and get a little better:)

I think my mom may choose to have the mastectomy done. What can I expect after her sugery? How can I help her?

my mom had one in jan and within a a few days she was up and about much to my surprise. the time leading up to the surgery seemed to be harder than afterwards, fear of the unknown. the first 2 days she was very tired, didn't eat much, and had to deal with the drains (tubes to drain the fluids). she may need some help with those. also, make sure she has plenty of fluids while she is recovering.
honestly, the best thing you can do is spend time with her after the surgery. make sure to have some good magazines, movies, and new nice pillows for her bed. i think it's those little things that are appreciated and go a long way to making her comfortable. -
Hi,
My mom was recently diagnosed with stage II so I know exactly how you feel. She starts chemo on Wednesday for 6 months and then radiation. It may be a possiblity that it has spread to her spine so we are waiting for those results. I learned to take this one step at I time. Just know you are not alone. -
My Mom was diagnosed last Friday. She underwent a Bilateral Modified Mastectomy yesterday. They found cancer in the left lymph node. We are waiting for the results as to what stage and what type of cancer it is. I am feeling so overwhelmed and hepless!! She lives 600 miles from me so I can't be with her during all this. They are saying she will need some Chemo and I wish we lived closer so I could help her out.

My mom just started chemo as well on April 11th. She will have to go for 4 months and then after that, go for 6 weeks of radiation due to the involvement of the lymph nodes. She just had a PET scan done on Monday and we are awaiting to results from that to see if the cancer has spread. Please know that you are not alone and if you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to email me. Hang in there.
