The emailed worked here so I sent them my question.

Hello all...back from "vacation" to Seattle and Salt Lake...only gained 2.5 pounds and I was happy since I felt I ate my way across both cities...and I'm sure part of that is going to be water with all the salt in restaurant food. And it was worth every bite because we ate at some awesome restaurants...I don't mind gaining when it's GREAT calories!!!! Junk food calories are so not worth it to me!
Celia...congratulations on the elipitical!!!!! And you will get back there...slowly and surely!
Rose, did you get an answer from Polar...I use one and it transmits to the equipment at the gym I go to...but I think it has to be "polar" compatible. And even then, it will pick up monitors nearby or when I put my hands on the heart rate grips it will show my heart rate up at 190 and of course it's not. But they are extremely handy to have just like you said, so you can swing those arms and get even more cardio.
Glad to be back and getting into the "routine" again! Now just one more laundry load!

"It is continuous monitoring, and if you run on the treadmill you can just swing your arms and you dont have to grab anything."
Cait, i actually said this, and it is ironic because i have to hold on to the treadmill so i don't fall! No swinging my arms like i was walking normally...not for me.
I am glad you enjoyed your vacation. I live about 2 hours drive from Seattle, in the Pacific Northwest. I had to leave Berkeley, California to come up here because my hubby, who was in the Navy at the time, got stationed up here. I do not like all the rain we get here.
I had gotten a Polar Pacer last week and mentioned it on the thread. I had one about 20 years ago when i used to run on a track. In those days there was a chart to figure out your Training Zone in the info book that came with it and it was easy to set up. My new one is the FS-1 (most basic) and i have to set it up digitally. I have not done that yet so have not used it yet. Which model do you have? I do not know if my Polar will transmit to the gym equipment where i exercise. I am not sure why i would want it to transmit to them, since i think the Polar is probably more accurate than the gym equipment pulse rate detectors.
Rose, have you gotten your answer from the Polar company yet??
peace,
celia -
I haven't gotten an answer yet My confidence in the salesguys at the store isn't all that high, I'd hoped somebody online would help.
Their comparison sheet mentions "polar one" or something like that. It's supposed to stop cross-talk between monitors. I don't know that we're a monitor happy gym where I go. Seems to me a lot of people are reading while they're on the machines. I have a thing about that as I don't think you work out as hard.
I want it to transmit to the machines so I can adjust my iPod without losing my pulse rate. Plus I'm gadget happy.
Glad to hear you're only up 2.5 pounds. That won't be hard to dissolve. It's 5-10 pounds that can be hard to lose. -
I did hear back from them.

Thank you for your email.
The F11 is sold with the Wearlink coded transmitter. The coded transmitter
is compatible with most exercise machines that have the Polar logo. Some
exercise machines may not be set up to receive the coded signal. You can
check with the healthclub or the manufacturer of the particular machine. -
Thanks, Rose.
I am curious as to what the advantage is of having the Polar Pacer transmit your pulse rate info to the exercise machine's pulse rate checker device, since the Polar Pacer has the wrist watch that has the read-out??
peace,
celia -
Celia - I don't know that there is an advantage, I'm just being gadgety. If they had one that would transmit to an iPod I'd probably think I needed to buy an iPod!
A lot of it is just stuff to keep me interested. Between the aerobics classes and people I like to say Hi to, various injuries that I'm always nursing and these little personal "challenges" it all keeps me going back to the gym.
You don't want to know how many exercise outfits I own! They're all from WalMart or Target, and they're just one more thing to keep getting myself over there fresh.
No problem going today because when I look outside there is snow. Brrrr.... -
Rose...I just finished culling my exercise "outfits" because they just won't fit in the drawers anymore! I swear I own more stuff to exercise in then "regular" clothes! And then of course there is the kayaking clothes! Snow for Maryland...can you believe that Texas is getting tons of snow also???? Houston is only 42 degrees today!!!! And drizzling rain. No kayaking for Easter...bummer! But we'll be back in the 80's by Tuesday!
Celia...I also hold on most of the time...these knees just don't balance the same way as the real ones, do they?
I prefer the heart rate readout on the machines so I don't have to keep looking at my wrist...plus I have an ipod on the arm!
Have lost all but 1/2 pound of the ones I gained on the trip. Won't lose much this next week. I have a 26 mile kayak race on the 14th, so I won't restrict calories below 1600-1800 AND I have to add 400 carb calories on Thursday to get this body ready for the race...wish it could be in cheesecake calories! But it will have to be in whole grains...gives me a chance to enjoy Panera's bagels for a day! And on Sunday my appetite will run amok needing to refuel!
Everyone stay warm...I swear most of the country is under a spring deep freeze...except you Celia...I see that Seattle is having a warm spell!
Cait -
So the "carbs" shouldn't be fatty? I find that fatty things cause me to gain weight more easily.
The snow is gone but it's only 47, which is a bit nippy. I thought maybe the heat was off for good.
My exercise wear doesn't fit in my drawers very well. I cheated and put it into a plastic crate, my rationale being that I wash them frequently and needed a quick store place.
Swim-wear has a different basket, and of course the sweats and hoodies just have to hang on hooks so I can find them quickly. -
Has anyone tried Hoodia, I am 20 pounds over my original wt. I eat well ( usaully about 1200 cal) , excersise daily, but those pounds won't come off
Help, -
Rose...I agree, fatty ANYTHING makes me gain fast. No my carbs this week will come from whole grains...and fortunately they do stay with me longer and make me feel fuller. And actually once I had gotten used to 1200-1500 calories...I won't be happy when I have to add the extra...I end up feeling "stuffed." But I'll need it for the race...then I'll go back to 1200 and hopefully knock off this last 9#.
Reorganized my workout clothes this weekend and got rid of all the sports bras that had been stained with the radiation markings...time to move on. So now, I need to go buy new?!? Any excuse and I'm betting Target has lots of new spring stuff in!
Cait -
I've never tried Hoodia. I would urge you to get 30 minutes a day of walking, and be really honest about the calories. That means measuring things religiously. I find that my portions creep up on me really easily.
I didn't have radiation, but I had sports bras that just didn't work with my new chest, so those went out. The same with tops. Somehow I have a little roll of tissue around my underarm (which should be about two inches lower, so low cut tanks aren't right.
As time as gone on a lot of my "first" new round is in the give-away bag because I've found better solutions. I have actually had some spandex shorts lose their stretch or rip, and those are in the trash.
Now that pants have gotten lower cut I'm onto better undies so the band isn't always showing. My wants are endless.... -
Okay, Rose, since you love gadgets, I just got one from the friend we visited in Salt Lake. Hydracoach...it's a water bottle with a computer readout to measure and tell you if you are drinking enough water. My trainer is going to roll over laughing tomorrow am when I waltz in with this one! But it's kind of cool and like you I enjoy playing around with stuff! She got it at REI.
Cait -
Does it beep when it's time to drink?
-
Hi, folks.
I've been following the 'gadget discussion' with great enjoyment - I love gadgets, too, although the water bottle may take the cake (so to speak). I Googled it (www.hydracoach.com) and found:
"Intelligent Water Bottle - It Thinks While you Drink
HydraCoach has introduced the worlds first interactive water Bottle. It calculates your personal hydration needs, tracks your real-time fluid consumption, paces you throughout the day, and motivates you to achieve and maintain optimal hydration. Click here to view the features and functions of the first generation, "Basic Version", of the bottle. "
I didn't see anything about beeping, but it may have been hidden somewhere.
Just think: people got paid to invent this! -
I waltzed into the gym this morning with my new "water" gadget and I thought my trainer would fall on the floor laughing! Not since I brought my water bottle in a feathered "cover" has he laughed so hard! And then I forgot to turn the blasted thing on, so it didn't measure it at all! And no, I don't think it beeps...it better not!!! It's rather cool, but I have to get used to "sucking" instead of just slugging down the water from a bottle. I was told however, that I would not be taking it in the race this weekend...camel packs instead filled with electrolyte water!
Cait -
You had a FEATHERED water bottle cover?
-
Yes, there is a spa/hair/nail salon that I go to and she has them in her boutique...stretchy BRIGHT material with boa type feathers (also VERY BRIGHT) on the top of it...fits snugly over a standard bottle of water. I have about 6 of them in various colors just to drive my trainer to distraction. It's especially useful if they start to shed a few feathers and they float through the air in the gym...the guys HATE it! And that makes me grin!
Cait -
I've been after my husband to get a Camelpack. He's doing a century ride. He doesn't think he'd like it.
Water bottles are something that I seem to lose. One plus to driving a car inhabited by a teen aged boy is that there is always an empty soda bottle knocking around. I rinse them out at the Y and use those.
I had one with a pink ribbon that I got at the Race for the Cure. Since I really wasn't so keen on carrying that one around it took a long time to get lost. I think my husband snitched it for a bike ride. I don't think he even knows what a pink ribbon is for. -
Rose, it does take some getting used to using a camelpack, but once you do, it's wonderful. Especially for kayaking since it means I will drink more water since I don't have to stop paddling. On hot days, we fill one with cold water and a second one with ice. By the time the first one is finished, the second one has melted into ice cold water! Heaven on a hot day!
I agree about the pink ribbon thing...most of my friends learned early on...skip the pink gifts...I carry enough scars to remind me!
Still stuck with 9 pounds to go.......
Cait -
That's pretty good that you've gotten back on track after your vacation.
The last pounds are the hardest ones to lose. You need to get down to your goal. Once you get there you'll fluctuate, and if you never got to your goal you'll fluctuate higher!
I'd think he'd want one on a bike ride, but you know how husbands are.... -
Rose you are so right...my trainer keeps asking me if I really want to get to 145, thinking that 150 might be better because of the endurance rows...but I really want to see what 145 looks/feels like.
And after months of very healthy eating...I grabbed a handful of peanut m n m's that my step g'kids sent for Easter...I have the WORST headache...not that a handful is going to have a huge effect on my weight...but it's a great reminder that food, any food, affects our bodies!
And yes, I know what you mean about husbands...it always has to be "their" idea before their adopt it, doesn't it?
Cait -
Hi, Cait-
A question about the camelpak. Do you wear a PFD (lifejacket) when you kayak? If so, what do you do w/ the camelpak? I'm on a dragon boat team, and the camelpak idea is very appealing for summer practices, but I can't imagine using one with a PFD. I feel like the Michelin man already sometimes (yes, I'm going to buy a trimmer one this summer!). -
I think getting to 145 is a good idea. Then 150 can be your upper limit. Everybody has holidays so you need some ease to accommodate those.
-
Stronglady...I actually use a platypus, not a camelpack...the platypus has a gussetted bottom and I can sit it in front of me which should work well for the dragon boat...I captained a db team a year ago and my husband rows for a year round team that has just been invited to compete in Taipei. The platypus also has a longer drinking hose and a clip which would attach to your pfd, putting it at mouth level. I find that I can "snag" that mouthpiece, sip and never miss a stroke...which means I hydrate better. And I usually put some kind of electrolyte (GU2O is a good one) into the water. I never paddle without my pfd on. I use a pfd that is made for paddlers...got it at Academy if you have one near you. Larger arm holes and it comes down lower in the front...not under your chin. There are also some pfds made specifically for women...the Betsea is one I remember. I've always wondered why someone hasn't manufactured one specifically for mastectomy boaters! If your db team ever gets down the Houston way, we'd love to have you in one of the regattas!
Cait -
The LL Bean catalog has some for women. I"m saving my bonus points for one to take to NH this summer.
-
I'll have to check out their catalog Rose...lost another pound...yeah! Only 7.5 to go! Just finished getting down the 850 extra carbs ahead of this weekend's race. I'm so used to being on that "slightly" hungry edge, this does not feel comfortable!
Also, thought I would pass on some info I got today from a doc in PA that is doing a weight lifting/lympedema study. They are finding more and more that lifting and working out is helping not hurting...but that not only do you have to start gradually, but even if you have been working out...if you have to stop for a time because of healthy or family...then you have to start back much more gradual than you normally would have. Good information to have!
Everyone have a great healthy weekend!
Cait -
I've always felt that the warm up/cool down was more important with lymph edema. Your arm doesn't handle lots of fluid as easily so you've got to edge into it.
So there I am setting all the weights to 30 pounds on the weight machines. Perfect form is my goal.
Yeah on the pound! Those are hard to lose. -
The trouble with all this edging-back-into activity with lymphedema is that with every little setback, you have to start all over. I feel like I spend my life moving the weights up and down at the gym. And how do you 'ease back' into dragon boating? Stop paddling in the middle of the river? (I know I'm supposed to do that, and let the rest of the boat pick up my slack, but I HATE doing that).
By the way: who's the doc doing the exercise research?
Feels like I'm on the wrong thread...but those of us w/ LE exercise too! -
I've kind of given up on ever lifting very heavy weights. It is easy to injure yourself with them.
About the best thing I can say about exercise post bc is that you've always got something to occupy yourself about
We're the losing weight thread, but it's so much easier to do if you're exercising that the topic wanders.....
