Worried about BIRADS 3 ultrasound
Hello and good day to all!
I am 24 years old and noticed a lump in my right breast approximately 2 months ago. I put off getting it checked as my mother has fibrous tissue and is prone to cysts/lumps in her breast, so honestly I believed that’s all it was. It did not hurt at first. I did go to the dr for an unrelated issue and mentioned the lump, to which she felt it and said it did not feel like a cyst, but just to watch it and come back if any worrying symptoms developed. I was back in about 2 weeks later due to pain from the lump and slight breast swelling, which quite possibly could be because I constantly poke/prod at it. It does feel moveable to me.
When I told her about the pain, she scheduled me for a “limited” right breast ultrasound. The ultrasound revealed a focal point that is 3.6cm, parallel in orientation with decreased echogenticityand the radiologist believes it is just a fibroadenoma or a cluster of microcysts. My BIRADS score was 3. The part that worries me is the radiologist recommended a follow up, but he wants me to follow up in 3 months rather than 6, which from everything I’ve read seems a little early and makes me think he’s worried it could actually be something worse. It could just be that he has different preferences than other doctors, but it just threw me off that most everyone says a 6 month follow up but yet I’m going in 3. I have scheduled an appointment with a gyno in my area for a second opinion just for peace of mind or in case something was missed, and that appointment is September 27th. I am trying to stay positive about all of it but I’m still just really worried. I’m just looking to see if anyone has been in a similar situation as I am and if it’s normal for a 3 month follow up?
I appreciate anyone who takes the time to reply back to this and help me out.

Elenham I don't think I would read anything sinister in a shorter follow up time period. If the radiologist was more concerned, they would have labeled your results as potentially needing other imaging or a biopsy. It is entirely possible that the radiologist "read" your concerns and is doing a shorter follow up interval to support you and to be just that extra careful. It may be that this particular doctor does that with some regularity as well. I am pleased you are getting such careful care. I went through a similar situation at the age of 30 and I remember well how unsettling it all was.
Please come back and let us know how the three month imaging goes.
