Most mornings when I awake, I am pleasantly surprised to find I'm still alive. On occasion I have been known to wake up mean and irritable, but even then I can choose not to stay that way. Yesterday is gone, and tomorrow may not come. Today is the only slot of time I really have. What a shame to blow it. I want to make today the very best possible. . . . Before I crawl out of bed, I thank the Lord for another day and ask for strength. Maybe I'm to clean the house, or work at the office, or talk with a friend over lunch. The tasks aren't the issue; my attitude is. -Marabel Morgan

Trump and the NRA ( maybe Abbott, Cruz, Rubio and others ) are quite chicken-hearted. They will ban guns from their NRA meeting -- giving themselves a huge chance of going home alive after the meeting. If they won't accept guns there -- then why are we forced to accept them in other places. Yes - lives can be saved but some of the rich may not get richer. Heavens, a gun manufacturer may have to go out of business.
We are so backward -- but I think the only way to get something going is not to let up. We are lots of talk and actions, immediately after something happens, but way too soon, on to the next thing before much if any headway is made and then something else happens and all attention and focus evaporates somewhere in the background.
Pressure needs to continue to be applied. The minute we slack off they bring out the brooms and away the issue goes.

I have come to despise Ted Cruse -- the feeling started quite a while ago. Easy to put this here for me. I would not like him if he were a Democrat, and indeed most of the other Reps. dislike him intensely too. Pretty telling when none of the parties sees any value in you.

You can sure hear the ring of this is really how it is on this one.

Most of you know that I am a retired teacher. I still sub regularly in my former district. Yesterday I was in a 4th grade class, as I was on the day of the Uvalde shooting. Less that half an hour after the start of school a girl came up to me literally shaking and on the verge of tears. She whispered that she is afraid, can’t stop thinking about the shootings and feels that it could happen to us. I was shaken to the core to see how it affected this girl. She spent the rest of the day in our “Brave Room, with our psychologist and mental health counselor. i am so heartbroken and so angry that some of our so called “leaders” think that any attempt to curb gun ownership is more important than the lives of children and the psychological scars it leaves behind.
-
I can't imagine being a teacher after a school shooting. I know my daughter answers questions when her students (elementary age) ask questions, but you never know what's going on at home or in their orbit tha might cause them to break down. Glad your school system has support.

And the tragic thing is, you can't tell them truthfully that they will be fine. What a nightmare we Americans are living in.

Looks like "clergy sexual abuse lawyer" is a new legal specialty in Colorado.
"The Lawsuit: Priests and clergy members have made headlines worldwide after the repeated sexual abuse of young church members came to light. These allegations claim the Catholic Church was responsible for allowing these sexual assaults to occur. Many also allege an active cover-up to protect clergy members by hiding these incidents and moving the offenders to another diocese.
New state laws make justice possible for victims of childhood sexual abuse. Those who have experienced sexual abuse at the hand of the Catholic Church can file a lawsuit against the organization. These survivors deserve justice for the inflicted harm and the church's failure to protect their most vulnerable members. A clergy sexual abuse lawyer can help victims file a claim and take the case to court."

I hope against all that I understand about the USA, that Robb Elementary will be the American Omagh moment. In 1998 a bombing at a market in Northern Ireland killed children shopping for the beginning of school, a pregnant women carrying twins, many others. In spite of The Troubles and years of car bombings, pub bombings, killing British soldiers, 20 minute warnings from the IRA, the nation was shocked into peace talks. Can America be shocked enough to come to its senses? No civilian needs an automatic, weapon of war. You can't hunt with one. There would be nothing left of the deer you shot.
Please please please. Let everyone be wrong that the mid-terms always spells disaster for the government in power. May this midterm see the Repugnicians wiped out in both the House and the Senate.
Canada has depressed teenagers. Domestic violence. Video games. Mentally deranged people. What do we also have ? Bans on automatic weapons, hard to get hand guns. And -- our history is not the one of the man alone on his horse with his gun. Can we blame Ford for his movies where disputes were always solved with a shootout?
edited: I should probably say "mythology" of the man alone on his his horse with his gun.

Cardplayer,
Seriously, there was one gunman and how many cops? If they would have spread out in the building, realistically only one of them would have been in peril. But I guess one cop's life is more valuable than the lives of 19 children and 2 teachers.

Walking exercises the whole person. It exercises the body-- it gives the arms and legs a workout. It stimulates the flow of blood; expands the lungs. It is gentle and relaxing. It exercises the mind-- it shakes up the brain cells. It fills them with oxygen; drives out the cobwebs. A famous scientist says he does his best thinking on the two miles of sidewalk between his home and office.
Walking exercises the emotions. It gives you a chance to observe and enjoy the world. Open your eyes to beauty. See the homes, the trees, the gardens. See the shining faces of little children. Listen for the church chimes, singing birds and the laughter of happy people. -Wilferd A. Peterson

You are right Ping-Pong, Elderberry, Pupmom and others. The ball was so SERIOUSLY dropped in Uvalde. I do REALLY hope change, even if way slower than we would all like to see, is coming. I so pray these children didn't ( like so many others ) have to die in vain. I hope the tide is turning. I know the majority of Americans want strong reform. It is time to stand up and keep standing. The politicians are not going to do it for us. They are greedy and want power, control and money to flow their way -- so it is time to stand up and keep standing.
If we do that -- by election time perhaps we will actually get rid of some of the worthless baggage that calls themselves Reps. That I hope will start a trend -- where people who only want money and power are no longer acceptable to those who vote. We always say now is the time -- but time slips away. I so hope and pray -- not this time.

This was posted by a friend on Facebook from a teache. Thought it was good to share here too -
As educators, we have done our part.
We have fenced in school playgrounds and locked all doors except one single point of entry. We have added a a double entry to the front door and added bulletproof glass. We have led our students through active shooter drills and watched the scared looks in our student's eyes as they cowered in the darkened classroom. Research tells us that drills are not good for students emotional well-being, but we want to keep them safe. We have added door stops to classroom doors and covered any classroom door windows. We have partnered with law enforcement to add metal detectors and school safety support officers. Teachers and administrators have completed hours of active shooter trainings and collaborated with county and state law enforcement officers to hold active shooter simulations. Every teacher continues to place her life on the line for her students with the understanding that she may be the next teacher who dies protecting her students.
We have done our part.
Now, it's time for our legislative representatives to do theirs.
1. Ban military-style assault weapons.
2. Require universal background checks for all gun sales.
3. Close gun sale loopholes and require background checks on all commercial gun sales.
4. Remove the prohibition on gun violence research by the CDC.
5. Ban bump stocks and limit the size of ammunition clips.
6. Pass an Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, a "red flag" bill, to allow relatives and law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from an individual in crisis.

I hope this is true:
-
It's just so damn sad that educators and students have to go through all this, just because of a few Repugnants in our government.

https://texassignal.com/report-cops-waited-outside-for-40-minutes-during-the-uvalde-shooting/
As Gov. Abbott walks back his praise of the police response today, here's a report from two days ago about police threatening to taser parents who wanted to enter the school to rescue children, reports of officers who entered the school to rescue their own children and video of a parent on the ground.

When is the Texas electorate going to say ENOUGH!
-
When there's a gun in every pocket, all women's health clinics are closed, and the only people of color are federal prisoners that white men paid for to come work on their properties. Then they'll say enough. Maybe.

I left that hell hole 31 years ago, and have never looked back.

Cardplayer, I'm glad you shared that very succinct letter about teachers. I told my husband the other night that teachers should not have to worry about marksman ship -- they are paid to see to penmanship. I think it incredible that Reps. have decided teachers should stand up to shooters and that they propose having only one entrance/exit door.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but the Reps. have something replacing their brains and it is pretty ugly.
As for Herschel Walker -- did he finish school. His fix ( for the shootings ) is to NOTICE young men looking at young women. I read that and couldn't believe what I was reading. I think anyone ( including Reps ) who vote for that guy is definitely touched. In fact, after reading that I'd expect the idiot Loon to be the only one who would vote for him.
I went way past total disgust for the Reps. some time back and while I keep thinking they have reached the lowest they can go, I am wrong. They don't seem to have a bottom line on their idiotic and dangerous stupidities.

So sad--so true:
-
This cartoon is from 2018.

Herschel Walker didn't complete his education at Georgia, although his bio first claimed that he did before his campaign corrected it. He's skipped all of the debates against Warnock. I can see why. He also has questionable business dealings (like his buddy Trump) and has a history of violence against women. Sounds like an ideal GQP candidate.
