Thank you, JKL! I'm coaching my coworkers on whether they want to file claims for lost wages too. Our DoLE is slow and backlogged, but really helpful when they finally get to your case.

I watched the news as they mentioned that quite a few parents were looking for their children and they were all age 10. I froze… most 10 year olds are finishing fourth grade. Then they announced that the deceased teacher was a fourth grade teacher. My oldest granddaughter is 10 and in the fourth grade. I subbed in a fourth grade class today. I am beyond heartbroken and beyond angry that those self serving vain jerks in Washington are just fine with it. Does someone have to gun down one of their loved at the supermarket or school before they stock kissing the gun lobby’s posterior?

*Weird and unimportant coincidence; The sweet little chihuahua I adopted this past fall came from Uvalde, TX.

miriandra - Well don. I hope you and the other therapists benefit from your efforts.

My heart is broken this morning. Another senseless killing of innocent people, including children. Coach Steve Kerr said it perfectly -

In an emotional address hours after a mass shooting at a Uvalde, Tex., elementary school Tuesday, Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr criticized congressional leaders for their inaction on gun control legislation.

“When are we going to do something?" Kerr said during a news conference before Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. "I'm tired. I'm so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. I'm tired of the moments of silence. Enough. There's 50 senators, right now, who refuse to vote on H.R. 8, which is a background check rule that the House passed [last year]. ... There's a reason they won't vote on it: to hold on to power.

"I ask you, Mitch McConnell, and ask all of you senators who refuse to do anything about the violence, the school shootings, the supermarket shootings, I ask you, 'Are you going to put your own desire for power ahead of the lives of our children, our elderly and our churchgoers?' Because that's what it looks like."

Personal prayer, it seems to me, is one of the simplest necessities of life, as basic to the individual as sunshine, food and water--and at times, of course, more so. By prayer I mean an effort to get in touch with the Infinite. We know that our prayers are imperfect. Of course they are. We are imperfect human beings. A thousand experiences have convinced me beyond room of doubt that prayer multiplies the strength of the individual and brings within the scope of his capabilities almost any conceivable objective.

Unless Congress acts soon (I know) to pass comprehensive gun control, schools will have to become like prisons. Visitors and their backpacks, purses etc. will be required to go through metal detectors, with staff protected by bullet proof shields until the visitors are cleared. There will need to be multiple police on site, armed with military style weapons. I worked as a psychologist in a juvenile detention center, and its a real pain coming and going, but there won't be any other choice soon. Communities will have to pass bonds enabling all public schools to protect children and staff. Such a sad and completely unnecessary state of affairs.

It is a sad morning, much like our sad afternoon yesterday when the news kept getting worse. 19 children gone and two teachers. It seems like Democrats have always been ready and soooo willing to do what they can and the idiotic, money and power hungry Reps. just will not let it happen. I hope people keep pounding on the Reps. till they are sick to death of taking a beating. Maybe they will let something decent happen. I'm pretty sure many don't want to -- but we keep letting them off the hook.

An election is coming. I'd like to think this incident will help determine who wins and who doesn't. Meaning I hope ANY Reps. who is not for and willing to vote for SOME kind of control is ousted this time around. Who knows, because all too soon it gets stuffed in the corner. The momentum fades way too quickly and the Reps. murderers go on their merry way -- getting their fix it for me money- from the gun lobbyists.

Un-fortunately, the Reps. are on the wrong side of just about everything. No matter where you look they have something that the Democrats need to try and fix. I think the list is long -- but saving lives, especially those of children should be way high up --if not at the top. No one on either side should stand in the way of saving children.

I hope Ted Cruz ( Cancun candidate ) loses very big. Sickening piece of filth so much so that even his fellows in government despise him.

two weeks ago I had to go to ER. There was a HUGE 7foot tall security guard there, who very politely asked me to walk through a scanner and if he could check my bag. I had no problems with that. Why can’t the same be done at schools? I was not admitted to hospital.

Pingpong, some do, some don't. Most high schools, and a lot of middle schools, in inner cities, have them. Suburban schools mostly don't, yet. Very few elementary schools have them, imho, but probably every school will, sadly, have to move in that direction. Of course I'm not an expert, but I have worked in many schools across three states.

I have turned off the news for now. It is hard to continue listening to it hour after hour. We already know the story -- maybe missing some of the fine details from this one, but we know that the greedy, money-grubbing power-hungry Reps. won't vote to help ANY of these people or the ones before them and so these things are becoming a daily event in life. It remains un-believable to me that one small segment of government is allowed to be so destructive to the lives of so many w/o apparent restraint. They get to ignore desperate needs if they are paid enough and they easily look the other way while slipping the money in their pockets. I'm not wanting to ignore those who grieve or the lives that were lost, but I just fee the need to see or hear any more Reps. right now. They remain un-gloriously hideous irresponsible people who make me ill right now.

With the incredibly limited school budgets, what would you rather spend money on - metal detectors, retrofitting offices with bulletproof shields, and the salaries of armed security guards; or enrichment supplies, retrofitting classrooms with HVAC systems, and the salaries of teachers and paras? That's why this debate matters for educators. We wouldn't have to waste so much money on security efforts if our culture didn't prioritize and romanticize guns so much.

Idk where the funding comes from, but all the schools here have an SROfrom the local PD. When I started with my district in 1984, we had one on every campus. We also had the first school shooting back in about 86. One administrator dead, 2 wounded.

Ultimately, we have just one moral duty: to reclaim large areas of peace in ourselves, more and more peace, and to reflect it towards others. And the more peace there is in us, the more peace there will also be in our troubled world. -Etty Hillesum

Ruth, that meme hits it squarely on the head. We also know who most allows it. It makes me ill to think grown adult men can see or hear about children being murdered and jump all over the place to avoid facing real truth about it. They want the power and money to keep rolling along -- so they have to make odd excuses -- like mental illness. Is there any doubt -- yes there was illness, but the question is still why you ( Reps ) don't do anything to address the issue sufficiently. Why do you wish to allow ANYONE the right to buy a gun, and lots of ammunition? Why aren't you just as concerned about children's lives -- ones that still should be viable right now? How are they able to separate this as though these children are only a small part and should not be allowed to diminish other's rights. These children are everything and are the least consideration of ( at least by the other side ) all.

These Republican should be hanging their heads in shame -- blaming mental illness or other idiotic things for their abject failure because they remain for the money and power. I hope that possibly this close to an election, some of those people will get to go home from Washington and not come back. Tall order to a degree -- but I'm putting it out there in the Universe and wishing it on them as hard as I can.

This was hard to read about. It is what grief can do I guess. Another aspect to the horrid tragedy

    By Daniella Silva

The husband of one of the teachers killed in a Texas school shooting this week collapsed and died on Thursday while preparing for his wife's funeral, the family said.

Joe Garcia had been married to high school sweetheart, Irma Garcia, for 24 years before she was gunned down Tuesday at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

"I don't even know how to feel. I don't believe it. I don't want to believe it" that Joe Garcia has passed away, Irma Garcia's nephew, John Martinez, told NBC News.

Irma Garcia and co-teacher Eva Mireles were both killed along with 19 children at the school that's about 85 miles west of San Antonio.

Her son, Christian Garcia, said a friend in law enforcement who was at the scene saw his mother shielding students during the rampage.
