Feedback on New Format
While well intentioned, the new forum layout has some serious drawbacks. A white background does make it easier to read the text, but there is way too much white space partitioning the fields. It's as if it was designed for a large print format, but the designers forgot to increase the text size.
Here is a screen shot of the Active Topics page. The buffer column is enormous (see red notations). The most important field - the Topics list - is limited to about 2/3 of the screen. Ideally, the Topics field should be closer to 3/4 of the screen. The buffer column needs to be reduced to about a quarter of its current width. If the ad can be reduced in size to let the menu field be narrowed, even better. As you can see above (blue notations), the menu options barely use half the width of the menu field.
Here is a screen capture from one of the forums. The menu, buffer, and user columns take up so much space, the actual posts take up less than half the screen. Some posts even run off the edge of the screen. Again, please reduce the widths of the menu and buffer columns, so the most important elements on the screen take up the most space.
Also, I'm not sure why, with the sparse layout, but the pages are taking a really long time to load. I hope the glitches will be worked out easily. I know you put in a lot of effort to offer a new look. Thanks!
Note: These screen captures came from viewing on a laptop device.

I don't like it, but maybe because I'm not used to it. I used to understand where to go and how to know if one of my favorite threads had posted. It seems a lot harder now. : (
-
Sorry, but not a fan yet. Guess it will take time to get used to it. Taking longer to load. Wish the lettering was bolder.
-
Great comments miriandra. Interesting that you feel the white background makes it easier to read. I actually find your initial post, which has a light blue background - at least on my iPad, is much easier for my almost 60 year old eyes to read. The black/grey on white gives me eye strain and headaches. I would be surprised if this is considered “accessible”. But really appreciate the constructive comments on the buffer. I do think it depends on the browser/technology as there is zero buffer on my iPad using Safari.
-
Good point, SadiesServant. I was guessing that the white background was chosen for ease of viewing. In reality, a white background is often too bright for many viewers, causing the eyestrain you mentioned. Blue light from computers and mobile devices has been linked to macular degeneration in the eyes. Although blue is psychologically a calming, relaxing color, a pale yellow would probably be a healthier background color.

I don't know how it is connected with new design, but it is very slow. It was never like that before. And also i tried different sites, it is not my internet slow, it is this site. This is bad!

Thank you everyone, for your valued feedback and commitment to improving our community. As we mentioned on the glitches thread, we are less than 48 hours from the soft launch of a major site and community redesign, and while we completely understand your frustration with your experiences so far, we want to assure everyone that we are in constant communication and working very closely with our tech and developer teams to resolve access issues and bugs. We're confident that the slow loading times will resolve in the next day or so, and we are taking all of your feedback (glitch/bug and design-related) back to our team.
In an effort to streamline that process and make sure nothing is missed, please continue to post any and all glitch/bug or overall site feedback on the established thread: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/93/topics...
Thanks again, we are so appreciative of you all!

Super slow response almost unusable for me.

Thank you Moderators!

Thank you so much, Miranda. I agree all the negative space diminishes the text. I also agree with SadieServant the bright white background with the dark type is hard on my eyes. It also appears the font has been changed to a lighter font than previously. Perhaps warming up the white background and changing the font to a bolder with about 80% grey might work.
-
Very slow it also doesn’t look that appealing on my iphone, it looks very basic, it’s too white. The text is too light also and I have readers on.😂😂
-
I’m not liking it so farnew font is harder for me to read, pages load a lot more slowly, and iI have to log on every time I launch the site from my phone.
-
Honestly, this font is extremely hard to see and read. I also don't see where the Favorites section is. I found it yesterday by accident. Please, BCO, you gotta do better than this!
-
Everything about it is awful--from the glacial loads, "access denied" error messages, excessively wasteful (and glaring) white space, to the tiny fonts in gray rather than black (even the icons in the Edit bar atop the Message box) in contrast to the disproportionately gigantic Times New Roman fonts atop each page (reminiscent of a 2010s' DIY Wordpress blog), not enough color (making the site monotonous to read); the numbers of new posts in the Favorites list too small to see; round avatars, some squashed horizontally, some stretched vertically, some missing entirely. This looks like it was designed by somebody's kid. All the white space and no graphic variety (regarding lack of color, monotonous typefaces), and tiny print seem like the web-design equivalent of the "mosquito ringtone:" a sound deliberately designed by teens with such a high frequency that nobody over 30 can hear it. Absolutely NO consideration for the majority demographic on this site, with aging vision and often having to access it on a mobile device. (If I'm having trouble on a MacBookPro, I shudder to think what someone using the site on a Kindle or small iPhone must be going through).
There needs to be an option in the Dashboard section for users to choose typefaces and font sizes for Forum content posts.
As to that white space, just a thought. My first website was designed in 1999 by a friend who wrote book reviews for a PC magazine. It had very little color, no differentiation between pages, amateurish fonts and logo; but its overwhelming flaw--from graphics pros and fellow musicians alike? Too much white space, making it look like a technical writer's blog (not surprisingly, a technical writer designed it--I soon dropped him like a hot potato). Oh, and it went live in 2000. This is 2022 already. I've seen legal-research and medical-journal sites with more varied graphics.
Why on earth did it have to be redesigned? Were advertisers angered that their ads didn't get enough "real estate" and jealous that actual content garnered more attention? Did they have to switch to a cheaper webmaster or a web hosting service that required using its bargain-basement templates? Change for a valid reason is a good thing--but change for change's sake (or to "shake things up") is counterproductive (an euphemistic understatement if ever there were one).
-
I agree, ChiSandy. If their contract with their tech support ended, and the developers took their code with them, then maybe they might need to overhaul everything. But there didn't seem to be any user impetus to throw out the baby and the bathwater.
-
Hi all,
Again, in an effort to streamline that process and make sure nothing is missed, please continue to post any and all glitch/bug or overall site feedback on the established thread: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/93/topics...
There's no guarantee that glitches posted in this thread will make it to the tech team, so please either post at the link above or send us a PM.
Thanks again, we are so appreciative of you all!
-
ChiSandy, it's pretty bad on a smartphone. Too small, and if you try to enlarge then you have to scroll side to side. It reminds me of the days before websites had mobile friendly versions.
-
awful. I can barely see the font. Who designed this? Interns?
Moderators….feel free to PM me once you fix the font! Until then..I am not ruining whatever eyesight I have…mucinous sisters…the thread is all yours…I am well, done and out of here.. -
If BCO is using an external company to build the site, I wish they would publicize this so that we know to avoid them. I’ve been through two BCO roll-outs, and they have both been horrible. If the developers are in-house, then they need some help from more experienced programmers.
Did management change? If it didn’t, then nothing was learned from the first bad roll-out and that is a management failure. If it did change, then there was a communication failure.
I try not to post negative things because I find this site very helpful, but I’m frustrated that the site is still incredibly slow.
There should be a “lessons learned” document for this. It should be reviewed by the entire tech team and management team so that improvements can be made in the future.
I’m posting this because I work for a tech company and have many years of project management experience. I just want this site to be better because it helps so many people dealing with cancer
-
I have a family member who works in tech, and when I described what's going on, and how it was referred to as a "soft launch" he snorted and said that they clearly have no idea what they're doing, or they would know it's not a soft launch.
-
how many thousands of dollars were WASTED on this disaster???This is the third “improvement “ I’ve been through with BCO, by far the worst yet. I know it’s the weekend, the ppl in charge aren’t trying to fix this.
Forever to load, if at all. Extremely hard to read, too small, too white. I only use iPhone 13. Won’t let me look at more than one thread without restarting.
-
It takes a very long time to load and its very difficult to read.
-
We know how frustrating this is! We're passing this all along to our tech team and developers. You are being heard, we promise!

I am lost finding what I am looking for. When I first joined it was easier for me to find the topics that interesting to me and related to my situation. Now it’s like I don’t know where to look for that info. And site is very slow. Forget my password and every time I tried to reset it it keeps saying a link was sent but know link. So today I tried and rack my brain what it could be and luckily one worked. Sorry about all the negative feed bac

in the old format when I did a search, I was able to scroll through user comments. Now I just get articles, most of which are irrelevant. For instance, look up "eye twitching" and get nothing, but previously I could look at user comments on that symptom

I feel like I’ve lost a vital piece of my support system.
I’m newly diagnosed. On the day between my biopsy (2/15) and diagnosis (2/17) I was internet sleuthing like a woman possessed. When I found BreastCancer.org I finally was able to settle myself into a much more helpful frame of mind. When I easily found the guide to interpreting my pathology report and diagnosis, I felt so much more prepared for the phone call I received the next day. Being able to fill in the blanks was so very helpful.
The way your information pages were organized and the ease of navigation was the best I had seen. Not selling anything, just informing and supporting. The level of information was the Goldilocks Solution. Not too alarming, yet not sugarcoated. Not overly complex nor dumbed down, but complete enough to satisfy my unquiet curiosity.
One of the first things I noticed was your four star charity navigator rating. I would have been encouraging my friends and family who wanted to do something to contribute to your organization.
Your community was the next great find. When I posted questions about choosing a surgeon, I was humbled by the thorough, compassionate, and wise support I received in response to my post. I’ve pored through threads both old and new. I really had felt so much calmer and prepared for upcoming appointments. I had even begun to develop a warm familiarity with others who also had recent diagnoses, and some of the other faithful experienced members
I’m still unfurling my next steps. I now feel that in addition to losing the self I had who was nearly perfectly healthy, when your website changed last week, I’ve also lost an important tool in my successful recovery.
I know that organization leaders and moderators are also reeling. I just want to reiterate that there is too much that is good here to lose it to such a poor user experience. Any encouragement and expectations we can have that this will be corrected are vital to people like me. I’m not angry. Just a little more sad and lost than I though I’d be.
-
On day 6 can we still call these glitches? It seems that this is the new BCO.
-
SarahMaude, What a lovely post, albeit a sad one. You have a great way with words. What you've described is one of the big things I've been afraid of with this new system. I'm so sorry that you've been so negatively affected by this. I'm sure you're not the only one. I just can't believe they didn't have all of this figured out before they expected to present it and have us all use it exclusively. I have yet to see an explanation that makes good sense to me. I have some very minor sympathy for those involved in "launching" this, but not much. People who use this site have all kinds of problems, and that needs to be taken into account. Unfortunately, I don't think the target audience was given the consideration they should have been, when this was "planned" and executed.
-
Hi Mods, I know you are working hard behind the scenes to resolve this issues. It’s not an easy fix when things go awry. I know it would also be helpful if all the comments and reported technical issues were on one thread. Unfortunately, I have noticed that I have been unable to access that thread for two days. Each time I try I get the “site down” message and, although I never have success reaching it, the unread posts count resets as if I did. I noticed this morning that it had zero unread posts so suspect that others are also blocked from accessing that thread
-
sarahmaude, I'm sorry you're encountering health issues and questions when this BCO website is barely operational. I'm glad you found it helpful before it went haywire! I hope you can still post your questions and concerns to a new thread, and we will try to access. It saddens me that BCO launched through a major site change for everyone which makes it more difficult for us to walk with you. I hope it will be back to functional soon and that you receive the comfort and information you seek. All the best.
