I think I’ve had it and didn’t know it. Around thanksgiving I came down with a weird for me “cold”. Nose ran constantly, and a really nasty deep cough. Never felt bad. I still smoke, this isn’t smokers cough. Never ran a temp. Pulse ox ok. Now, nothing has any taste. With red devil, stuff had a dirt taste. Now there is nothing. Strange.

Well, after 4 negative rapid antigen tests (2 days between each, 3 different brands) I still had low-grade fever & a scratchy throat, so I got PCR (and flu) tested this morning. Flu-neg, but COVID+! Waiting for hospital pharmacy to call me back as to how & where to pull up to get my Paxlovid (assuming they have it) at curbside. Getting nervous bec. it's an hour drive and it closes at 3pm. Holding and they're not picking back up. Gulp. Think I'll head out anyway and hope they call me back before I get there.
Wow, Spookiesmom--sounds like you may have caught Delta rather than Omicron. I can still (knock wood) smell & taste. NP says we both got Omicron, judging by the symptoms. She says I'm likely already 3 days in, and would probably have PCR tested positive by Wed, or Thurs. had I come in.
-
I did suspect maybe I had it. I never got tested. Humana had the touchless thermometer and pulse ox, had them just in case. Not in close contact with anyone. If I had it, glad not to be in hospital.
-
spookiesmom,
I’m glad you’re not in the hospital too!
Many thanks to all who wished my granddaughter well. She has no fever today and my dd reports that her appetite has returned. My dd and her partner will continue to keep a close eye on her. They are both mostly working from home so child care is not a problem. They are also fully vaxxed but I still hope they don’t get it.
-
Glad you're not in hospital, Spookiesmom! We bought pulse oxes (Bob & I, and one for Gordy because of his asthma, even before the pandemic) and have an array of thermometers.
Caryn, glad your granddaughter is on the mend. Napa, eh? I see a combined winery tour route and lovely family visit in your future. I didn't realize Silicon Valley was only 1-3/4 hrs. from Napa--last time we did Napa we flew into & out of Oakland, which took over an hour each way.
-
Sandy,
I been up there several times since their move and it is lovely. My daughters partner has had a proper wine cellar built into their basement (basement are not common here) and has a very detailed spreadsheet to keep track of all of their wine. From San Jose it’s possible to completely avoid Oakland when driving to Napa. My best time has been 1 hour and 33 minutes!
-
exbrn - but I'd guess you're not going up 101 & across the Golden Gate?? I can't remember the time of my last trip from Palo Alto, but I don't think it was any shorter.
-
minustwo,
You guessed correctly! I can get to Hwy 680 easily and it then heads inland toward Contra Costa County at which point I continue in a more northerly direction. I avoid all big cities once I drive out of San Jose. I do avoid rush hour at all costs!

Wishing all w/ any kind of covid rapid healing. Love hearing about Silicon Valley and other interesting areas of Ca. I can't say I miss our life in Ca. all that much, but I was there for 25 yrs. We mainly lived in coastal areas -- Ventura and Santa Barbara. Visit most of the tourist attractions on the way or very close around Los. Angeles. Other favored places were Solvang and all the Ca. missions around there. We often went to Santa Inez Mission. My mother just seemed to really 'feel" it for want of a better description. We would take a picnic lunch with us and even my dad enjoyed going. Would usually go to a few stores in Solvang just because we were there before we left for home. Solvang is a little Danish Village and is a real tourist attraction. All sorts of wineries in the area as well.
-
Did you see the shoe store in Solvang with the giant red clog out front? My feet are awful and good clogs, Dansko or Sanita, are the shoes I wear most often. That giant red clog was like a monument to clogs!
-
exbrnxgrl, I don't specifically remember the red clog, but no one at the time was interested in shoes. I think we visited shops that featured kitchen goodies or food type items more so. Both my mom and I were more into those types of things although some general (like postcards) types of items were visited. I do recall the stores that had windmills. Fun to just stroll along the street and because we went often, we were able to bypass feeling like tourists. If something took our eye we would pop inside for a look.
-
Loved the jelly stuffed pancakes they made in Solvang. It is such a pretty town to visit and to explore all the interesting stores.

Thinking of everyone dealing with Covid right now. It is so disappointing when I know that we have all tried our best to be safe. I'm home from vacation & stopping here briefly because I need to buy groceries before the projected freezing rain commences. Mother Nature seems to be in a very bad mood this winter!

-
Love the memes, Ruth. I think you are right about Mother Nature and the weather. We will have snow upon snow since our temps have barely made it out of the teens, so no melt expected before the next round.
-
I'm sorry to hear about the Covid cases you've all dealt with or your family members have. I'm glad we're on this end of the vaccine and that there are some available treatments for Covid. Hope everyone is on the mend.
Gosh, lots going on. I read Spotify will add a Covid advisory to podcasts in light of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell pulling their music in protest of the asshat antivaxxer I won't name. Why couldn't Spotify do that before the protests?
In my area I have to put up with a proliferation of Dr. Oz political commercials. He's running for PA senator. I do mute most any commercial. He's hard to look at. Never liked him.
Our township trustee ran for reelection in November. Always voted for him, dh has known him since high school. This election, a large billboard type sign to vote for this trustee was painted on high wooden sides of a truck parked right outside the precinct doors where we vote. Clearly in violation of voting rules. My complaints fell on deaf ears when I told poll workers. As we walked home (a block away), I told dh, “I won't vote for him again." And I definitely won't because shortly after he was reelected, the trustee caught Covid and died earlier this month. Pretty sure he wasn't vaccinated.
You may have seen the collapsed bridge on a main road through Pittsburgh last Friday morning. It made national news since Biden was coincidentally visiting the same day. I've been on that road (Forbes Ave) many times as ds attended college in Pittsburgh, lives there now, and I've been 10+ years doctoring at one of the city's hospitals. If you look at photos of the collapse, you'll see how miraculously there were only ten injured, no deaths, during a wintry mix snowfall that day. They believe a two-hour public school delay prevented more vehicles from being on the bridge when it snapped. Pittsburgh is a city of bridges, the U.S. needs infrastructure improvement!
I saw an NBC headline this morning “Farmers flourish under Biden, see recovery from Trump-era trade wars". May this continue.
Following politics gives me anxiety these days. So much uncertainty. I recently bought a smart tv and it is a very fun distraction. I subscribe to a few streaming services so there's lots more content to watch compared to just basic cable of my old tv. Currently, my very favorite show is Ted Lasso (on Apple plus). Oh.my.word. I have never cared for Jason Sudeikus. Until now. Ted Lasso is the show we didn't know we needed to lift our spirits.
Also watched the NFL playoff games. No surprise The Steelers weren't in contention. But looks like Cincinnati Bengals and LA Rams will have a good Super Bowl match up. Lots of buzz around Bengals QB Joe Burrows: “In 2019, when he was awarded the Heisman Trophy, in his acceptance speech, Burrows mentioned the issue of hunger in Athens County (Ohio), where he spent the majority of his childhood. A fundraiser sparked by Burrow's comments elicited roughly $650,000 in donations to the food pantry there.“ My brother, a retired coal miner, and his adult children have lived in the Athens area for decades and numerous family members have attended Ohio University there. After the Bengals come-from-behind win on Sunday to take them to the SB, the buzz phrase is: Not.Your.Average.Joe.

Courage begins when we can admit that there is no life without some pain, some frustration; that there is no tragic accident to which we are immune; and that beyond the normal exercise of prudence we can do nothing about it. But courage goes on to see that the triumph of life is not in pains avoided, but in joys lived completely in the moment of their happening. Courage lies in never taking so much as a good meal or a day of health and fair weather for granted. It lies in learning to be aware of our moments of happiness as sharply as our moments of pain. We need not be afraid to weep when we have cause to weep, so long as we can really rejoice at every cause for rejoicing. -Victoria Lincoln

Count me in on those memes. I so enjoyed the Robert Kennedy one which is so spot on right now. I do think though Of Rob Kennedy, Jr. and wonder how he got on what surely is well into the wrong side of history. He did get trounced for it as well he should have. Really does make me wonder how easily and pervasive conspiracy theories have become over the last 15 or 20 yrs. I do have to say while it started long before, I do blame the Lying Loon so much. He made it a part of his so-called leadership all the up to and through The BIG Lie.
I do read this a.m. that at his rally over the weekend (they are letting him out for these rallies) he may pardon the 1/6ers if he runs and wins in 2024. Some Reps. (I need to check if Hell has frozen over) are not condoling this. Even champion a$$-kisser Lindsay Graham is now not willing to go that far. He too realizes that Loon has lost a lot of ground since he lost the election as an article stated: Loon is not a part of social media anymore and can't grab all the media attention thru Twitter and other sources who once kept him so front and center. He is slipping mightily. He also threatened that if any of the current investigations went further, and heavens if he were charged, that his followers should storm the capital and several cities like Atlanta in enormous numbers. I don't think it would happen at all. He has lost a lot of ground and so many Reps. are not wanting him to run - knowing he is just bad for business so to speak. He is over and just doesn't accept it yet. Many do not want to live in yesterday with him because at this late date it pulls them down to his repulsive level and there is no where to go with it.
Divine there is plenty of anxiety over political matters lately, and I've stayed back from a number of programs that were always on here. Dh still feels compelled to have a cable channel on most days. I listen at times with an ear towards anything new but have come to dislike the repetitions of each news person's hour. I often turn it off to watch something totally un-related, like HGTV, or a good documentary. I can get away with it until evening comes but then that is when some of the people, I like best are on. Especially Rachel Maddow. She fills in with related materials from sometimes a few yrs. back that give a lot of background on current events.
All tv's here are smart and we did it specifically so we could subscribe to one streaming service and drop our tv from the cable we use. We kept the phone and Internet on it so have the wi-fi needed to run the tv's and new streaming provider. We pay a lot less and get a lot more so there is always plenty to watch as well as movies that are free to us. So far, no regrets.

Once you are a certain kind of person, those stripes remain. She is a gold-digger s$t and will never change and just the kind of person who is a great match for her male orange counterpart. Oh boy, do they ever deserve each other.

Something I didn't know and explains perfectly why Neil Young did what he did. Best ad for vaccinations I can think of right now.

Healing is the journey. The destination is yourself. The full recognition of all the different aspects of yourself—your joy, your sorrow, your pain, your pleasure—all lead you to the source of who you are. Only by having intimate contact with this source can you experience the fullness of your life. Only by fearlessly looking within can you embrace the landscape of your life and open yourself completely to all the love and compassion that lives inside you. -Philip Berk

A Loon rally in Conrow, Tx. Well, he is going to or so he says pardon the 1/6ers, and likely any others whom he is calling on to storm several areas if he is un-fairly prosecuted. He seems to be starting to wilt big time with all the grand juries and assorted investigations. It is bearing fruit. It still seems to me that the media are not much into telling the truth. Why do that when the Loon can still help them pull-in an audience.
I'm of the opinion and as one of the news outlets did say, he is likely afraid to run. No one wants to "lose" again and unless he has a solid guarantee that he won't he is taking a huge chance. I also read on the way here that Tish James has called in the FBI for support. It is thought she may be doing that because she may be closer than anyone thinks at the moment of bringing down that indictment on the Loon. If anything, she has certainly managed to make him as afraid as he works so hard to make all the rest of us, about his ahem' power to hurt and destroy. I also read that if he truly expected to be able to win in '24 why would he sell his big money-maker of a hotel right next to the WH. That is about all he still had that was making money at all. He rakes him plenty, but his outgo his quite high and most of it goes right back out to keep up with his level of debt. I wonder if we would all be astounded to learn he isn't worth near what he wants people to believe.

Read this more than once and it always, but always indicates. How could people be seemingly brainwashed so fast. Something else ( moron ) must have been lurking below the surface to make it happen in what seemed almost effortless, and I am indeed talking about people I had a lot of respect for including some of my own relatives. Most seem still in the grip.
-
Lots of clapping going on at the Conroe, Tx. rally over the weekend. Must have been the people paid to do so section since the ones I noticed all seemed to be sitting in the same place.
-
With you all the way Willy.
-
I read somewhere he’s only got about $93 million in available cash. That sounds like a LOT of money to us, and it is. But his holdings are bleeding cash. Whatever comes in, goes out in payment. He had to sell the hotel. The RNC is paying his legal bills, he can’t. I can’t wait for NY to seize his property.
