    Illinoislady,

A Karen is not stupid, just entitled but I appreciate you saying no disrespect. I am a Caryn but it is pronounced the same. I have started giving a fake name if I’m in public because the eye rolling and snickering is getting to be a bit much.

I don't care for the trend of associating a person's name with bad behavior and I won't do it. A person's had a name all their life and suddenly it become associated with something unpleasant they've had nothing to do with? At the very least it's insensitive. It's very childish, immature, and I even consider it a form of bullying, taunting and making fun of someone. For that matter, I completely am against the use of the name Brandon for the reason asshats are using it currently. I don't imagine all Brandons are happy with it. Now these things should be passing fads, but still.

People are easily, easily duped. This month, I shorted my name on Facebook from Camille to Cam. I changed my profile picture to a shiny red sports car, and the cover picture is woodland scenery. My objective? To make it appear I could be a man. I occasionally comment on public newsworthy topics and constantly get mansplained or challenged for my views. Since I switched the name/photo, all I've gotten are likes. I purposely commented on manly things, like Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Rothlesberger's retirement (b'bye!) NFL player Antonio Brown's public meltdown (hope he gets professional help), and the chaos of air travel after the holidays (who was surprised?). I'm quite certain if I presented as a female on my comments, a few men would have tried arguing with me.

It feels like the majority of people only jump at the first conclusion they come to, never seeking additional facts or insights. And lots of people out there are just looking for a fight as well as many men trying to claim superiority on social media.

What we are seeing certainly disproves Darwin's Theory of Evolution. Apes are definitely smarter than many, many, many of the humans running around out there. Maybe we devolved (is that a word?) from monkeys!

Ruth: yes it is a word and approppriately used here.

DivineMrsM: Your first name is the name of one of my all time favorite students. Hard life but not a mean bone in her body and never used her past as a reason to not take responsibility or escape obligations. She went out of her way to assist her obnoxious classmate (no one else would assist her) and true to form she was not thanked for her assistance but she just smiled anyway.

My DSIL is a Karen by name but a Betty by disposition and unfortunately my DB (her spouse) is a Ken and again undeserving of any rude name calling.

every summer I attend a 5 day paddle outing in the Adirondacks. We stay at a college, room in a dorm, eat breakfast and dinner in the cafeteria and have a group meeting of about 75 people every evening to plan the next day's paddles. We register for the outing in January. A friend who I only see at this event just announced that she has been diagnosed with a blood cancer and that she has no immune system and can create no anti-bodies. She thinks she had covid in January 2020, she got two vaccines but had an awful reaction to the second. An active woman - in addition to paddling, she bikes, golfs and cross-country skiis. She is hoping to build back up her endurance, but is incredibly afraid of contracting Covid. I hope that the pills and whatever else is in the pipeline might be useful in treating her and everyone else who is immuno-compromised. No one should live in fear of human contact.

When the heart of your heart opens, you can take deep pleasure in the company of the people around you . . . When you are open to the beauty, mystery, and grandeur of ordinary existence, you "get it" that it always has been beautiful, mysterious, and grand and always will be. -Timothy Ray Miller

Hmm, usually when I hear/see Karen used the first person I actually think about is Karen Pence. Horrid of me I guess but that is how it is. I do agree by the way that it is pretty un-gracious to relegate a stance just because of a person's name. We did something like that on my daughter's name. We named her ( a long time ago ) Kathleen. At the time the number of 'Kathy's' was incredible. So right away we nicknamed her Kate and Iwas never sorry. When she was little she told the teacher that her name wasn't Kathleen --- it was Katie Kathleen Michele G.

In other news sounds like Orange gave up his need to have a press conference on 1/6. It was said that he did this right after hearing that Sean Hannity was being asked to appear and that the letter asking for him to had a number of references to communications from him to Trump as well as to other prominent people ( like Mark Meadows ) right before and during the 1/6 insurrection. Later on ( and I would imagine this is likely much more the reason ) he found out that the news channels for the most part will NOT carry the speech. Sometimes narcissists make themselves so easy to spot. He is holding a rally in ?. AZ I think on the weekend. Perhaps he will really ROAR since he will have a few more days to work himself up.

Sure sounds like no one at this point is giving up the idea that he will or should be all in for '24. Well, no matter what happens he is not going to say too soon. That might definitely slow any grifting he is able to do. I still hold out hope that SDNY or an other probe will bear heavy fruit and the Reps. ( with plenty of takers ) will scramble for another possible candidate with little time for promotion and the RNC will still be stuck paying big bucks to Trump.

    ruth,

I will stop complaining. It was in the mid 30’s for three nights in a row here and the days weren’t much above the low 50’s. I just couldn’t stay warm! Living in Northern CA for over 30 years has thinned my east coast blood. Stay warm

    Ruth,

We're going through a "don't forget to plug in the car" stretch of weather here in northern Ontario. Still beats a heat wave!

Haha! When we have those kinda temps here in January the weatherman always says something like, “It’ll be balmy weather in our area tomorrow with temps in the 50s to mid-50s.”

That’s so true Devine. Was probably in February one year. Had been cold and snowy all winter. Got one of those 50 days, snow still on the roadside in piles. Put the top down on the car, window up, heat full blast, and went for a ride. Cabin fever? My mom was scandalized.

Hey, Spookiesmom. Have you heard the latest name for your despicable governor? The one who probably has Covid, but will deny it to his dying day for political gain? Omicron Ron Death Santis. So fitting.

I thought Biden's speech was very good. Not that it will reach the members of the cult. I was glad to see Dick Cheney at the Capitol and read his remarks (I have never agreed with him on anything, ever....so these are strange times indeed). Maybe the former aides could get Cheney to take Trump hunting......

Ditto the Cheney remarks, Ruth. Met an inebriated woman at the lodge in Jackson Hole who unfortunately lived on the same road as him. She had purchased her home long before he settled there and she was super pissed that she had had to cancel several catered parties while he was VP because when he was in town, no one other than a resident was permitted in the area. It was always shutdown by Secret Service. They were never given advance notice when he would be in town so it really did have an impact on her personal and social life. Meanwhile she looked well-to-do. She was so funny relating these stories. Thens she asked if I was a Repugnican and I assured her that I wasn't and would not report her to him! They would even shutdown the airport when he was flying in.

I'm all for Cheney taking both Sr & Jr hunting but hope he would aim for the squash and not the butt. LOL.

My husband was fortunate enough to have met Sidney Poitier many years ago. He (my DH) was a student at American Film Institute, working on his Master's degree in screenwriting. One day they were told to expect a special speaker, but weren't told who it was.

Eric (my DH) was chatting with another student, when he said the air in the room suddenly changed, as if it were charged with electricity, snapping and popping. Everyone stopped dead in their tracks and turned toward the door, where Sidney Poitier was standing.

Eric said his presence, his charisma, was palpable; an actual physical effect he's never felt with any other celebrity. And he's met a quite a few in over thirty years as a Production Sound Mixer for movies and TV.

Mr. Poitier spoke for quite a long time, and graciously answered every question they had. To this day, Eric says he was the most impressive celebrity he's ever met. Well, except for Miss Piggy. But that's another story.😁

You will be missed, Mr. Poitier.

    Trish

Trish, what an incredible story to read about Sidney Poitier!

It would seem he was universally loved, respected, admired. And yes, star of one of the best movies ever with a title track to match:

If you wanted the sky I'd write across the sky in letters
that would soar a thousand feet high,
    To Sir, With Love.
