I'm sure some of you, like me, are looking at the new CDC guidelines and going, "WTF?" There was been a lot of pretty hilarious memes on Twitter. Here's a little sample:
"The CDC just announced you don't actually have to wash your hands, just get the fingies a little wet."
"CDC says when you've reached the center of a Tootsie Pop, your quarantine is over."
"The CDC announced that i don't have to tell anyone else in the group that a zombie bit me a few miles back."
"The CDC recommends bringing the giant wooden horse into the city, it seems nice."
"The CDC just announced that it is okay to text your ex "Happy New Year, just thinking about you :)" at 12:01am on January 1st."
"The CDC says that the 5 second rule has been changed to 15 seconds. Pick that cookie up off the floor."
"CDC now recommending the Carnival Cruise buffet."
"CDC says go ahead and get bangs."
"The CDC says it's not omicron unless it comes from the Omicrônne region of France, otherwise it's just sparkling covid."
"The CDC now says a venti iced coffee and two ibuprofen is a balanced breakfast."
"CDC says to just go up and talk to her and just be yourself."
"The CDC has announced it will be shortening the quarantine period even more for Amazon prime members."
"The CDC says if you blow weed smoke in a paper towel roll while covering the hole with a dryer sheet your mom won't smell it."

The Don Jr. saying Jesus' teachings have gotten Republicans “nowhere" was covered by numerous news outlets. The Atlantic was just one. I don't think Fox would cover it, but this Baptist place did:

I had a good Christmas overall despite a few hiccups along the way. Happier than last year's holidays. I did run into my sister-in-law (dh's sister) who is a loon. Her husband's brother, age 55, died of Covid about two months ago. Last year she shrugged and said a Z-pack and zinc was all ya needed to cure Covid. This summer she shrugged and said Covid will always be with us, like the flu and her husband was saying Covid's just like a bad cold. Now they've been very personally affected by Covid. Dh and I avoided most conversation on the topic when we saw her, but as we were leaving, she started talking about how the hospital did not treat her husband's brother for ten days and don't go to the hospital if you get Covid. I guess she's saying the hospital killed him. She and her husband are both college graduates. Long before Trump she was into conspiracies, so she's in her element. Pretty sure her brother in law wasn't vaccinated. His death and the pain that it's putting his loved ones through (especially during the holidays) could have been, probably would have been avoided, if he'd gotten it. I am sorry for their loss. I am grateful I don’t have to spend much time with the SIL.

Divine: sorry about the loon of a SIL but in reality (which you already know) any unvaccinated hospitalized patient is unlikely to have a positive outcome. Placing blame on others is a coping mechanism for those unwilling or unable to accept reality use to assuage their feelings of guilt/lack of knowledge/ignorance. So while this may make her feel better we all know that when we have a positive feedback it doesn't get disseminated as quickly as negative feedback, so her repeating this is message is more likely to be repeated by others like her.

This is sad because HCW's are now having to deal with such negative feedback for their efforts while they try to remain nonjudgmental when treating the unvaccinated. We already face a huge nursing shortage and this pandemic is making those alreay involved think twice about their future in healthcare. I think the same applies to teachers and others in the service industry. Being "ugly" seems to be the accepted behavioral norm now and that's sad.

Can you imagine what that reunion as well as with the stars of The Golden Girls will be like? However, she gets to be reunited with the love of her life and that's something that has been a long time coming. She will be missed.

I think I will never get over the amt. of reasonable, sane, and extremely bright people who lost sight of how to recognize a conspiracy, positive science and other marvels that make life much easier on everyone. In my younger yrs. I think a number of people who knew me thought it possible that I was easily led. I don't think I ever was but was so quiet they often mistook my silence for possible agreement. I am grateful this has been the case.

Guess I always realized that I'd be outshouted to the nth. degree, so 99% of THOSE people are no longer in my life. I couldn't do much about many of the intelligent Reps. in my family but refuse to discuss politics, but I will continue to find it sad that sort of wall exists. I find that anyone who can divorced themselves from the truth is mainly a burden to me. There have turned out to be so many more than I realized.

    Me, too, Ruth!

Happy New Year to everyone on this thread!

The above mentioned sister in law talked to dh yesterday and said she had Omicron. She claims to have cold-like symptoms. Has she ben vaccinated? We don 't know. Did she get tested or does she plan to get tested? No. She told dh she won't do the testing because her health dept would then want to know who she's been in contact with. She literally told dh, “I'm not a team player." Isn't that so fucking sweet of her? What a bitch. We saw her Christmas Day, no hugging, dh and I have had three shots, so we don't think her alleged case of Covid will affect us. She is a big liar, so she could just be blowing smoke for the attention. Without testing, where's her proof? But she's always acting like an authority on absolutely everything, more so than any expert on any subject.

I'm a little confused by what strains of Covid people are getting. There's the “original", not sure what they call that, then Delta and now Omicron. Are people still getting Delta? It's said Omicron isn't as severe, but can it still kill or do they know?

Both are still circulating, but Omicron is outpacing Delta. Omicron is less likely to send you to the hospital than Delta; but if you do wind up hospitalized with either, your chances of serious developments are about the same.

"Omicron is associated with a two-thirds reduction in the risk of Covid-19 hospitalization compared with Delta, suggests one study, released online Wednesday as a working paper by researchers at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. That research was based out of Scotland.

The other paper, posted Tuesday to the online server medrxiv.org, suggests that people with Omicron infections have had 80% lower odds of being admitted to the hospital compared with Delta infections. But once a patient was hospitalized, there was no difference in the risk of severe disease, according to that research, based out of South Africa." - (Early studies suggest a reduced risk of Covid-19 hospitalization when infected with Omicron compared to Delta)

It didn't say specifically in the article, but I would guess that's due to Omicron tending to stay put in the bronchus and not migrate into the lungs. This makes it more spreadable, since the viruses can fly out with each exhale, but less likely to cause lung damage requiring ventilation.

What I've been reading tally's with Miriandra. One additional note - apparently Omicron is not as likely to put you in the hospital, but since it is spreading so rapidly and widely, there are MANY times more positive cases and the burden on hospitals will still be the same.

Last evening SNL reran the episode Betty White hosted 11 years ago at the tender age of 88. She was brilliant! It caused me to reflect on the fact that it is a high tribute to pass away at the age of 99 and have the reaction be that you died too soon!

If we could but recognize our common humanity, that we do belong together, that our destinies are bound up in one another's, that we can be free only together, that we can be human only together, then a glorious world would come into being where all of us lived harmoniously together as members of one family, the human family. -Desmond Tutu

Hard to believe this man EVER thought of running in 2024. Seems like he is still quite interested but for the life of me I don't know why. He got to be ( though he sold his soul to do it, a Vice President who wasn't very much to speak of at all. His biggest claim to fame was NOT doing what Trump wanted at time to count electoral college votes to seat Biden. Whatever high marks he might get in remembrance for that would surely melt if he runs when so many of his country men were ready to hang him on the steps of the Capitol on 1/6. So many Reps. are stupider than a bucket of mud, but dangerous in their current state.

I made myself not put this on Facebook -- wanted too, but a couple of people have been kinder since I've been off for a time at Facebook -- so it is rather pleasant to no have to see a couple of childhood friends find Menes they know I won't like. Difference was the memes I used were essentially actually true while theirs were the usual near conspiracy level or just totally un-true.

Above is something I'd have loved to put on Facebook, but truth is--- since I was of so long while hospitalized and not posting I've stopped seeing a couple of my friends who always posted things they knew I wouldn't like when one of mine went thru to them. I understood what they were doing and why, but as always the difference was what I put in was for the most part totally true, while theirs was the usual near conspiracy or a total lie.

Too bad this is not a law everywhere. Too many people are going hungry that should not ever have too with all we have here.
We are so rich here in almost everything but sympathy and understanding for the lesser of us here.
Wonderful if that could change. I'll keep hoping for what good it might do.

Just to explain the two deleted areas. They were about the IQ meme that would not show as going through -- it just kept spinning for the longest time so I thought if I turned it off it would automatically be gone. It wasn't -- so that is the two removals above.
