Is it Claxton fruitcake? Still available here’s.
-
So hard to believe it is almost a year now that 1/6 happened. The orange loon will try to steal the spotlight that day, but I hope the news outlets will refrain from trying to get big ratings by showing him. It is not HIS day and he does not deserve news conference from Maralago. Fingers crossed that it is a bomb.
-
My DD, leading a parade for a wounded vet to their new home. Yes, I love the pipes.
-
Are you talking about Claxton fruit cakes from Georgia? I've seen them in specialty grocery stores in Ohio. I agree, they are the best!
-
Yes, I can get them in Publix here in FloriDuh, I guess the others carry them.
-
Speaking of seasonal treats, my DH just sent me this:
-
Mmm, fruitcake. I make a bar cookie that's fruitcake-ish, and I soak the dried fruit in booze because Mary Berry says so. And she is always right. When I open the container of cookies, it singes my nose hair.
I saw the stupid comment by stupid Palin. I hope that will be on her gravestone.
-
I actually like fruit cakes but only if they are very moist ( go booze!). However fruitcakes are not much of a Jewish tradition 😂. All the best to those celebrating Christmas!
-
Yes, ladies thank you for remembering it is the Claxton fruit cakes. Haven't seen one in years around here. Used to have a 3 pack in a cardboard mailer that you coluld order or purchase.
If I am going to have booze in a Christmas time dessert, it is going to be in Trifle which is sherry based in my version. My DSIL had more than one piece one year and my DD had to drive home. Might make one for New Year's this year.
Spookiesmom: If that is your DD playing the bagpipes, I admire her. It is not an easy instrument to play. Wonderful way to introduce a vet to their new home. Which song did she play?
Leave room on Palin's tombstone for her claim, " I can see Russia from my house" . I have been to Wassilla AK and you cannot see Russia from there. What a nutjob!
-
I don’t know what she played, probably the City of Dunedin gr 2 pipe band competition medley.
-
Oh, a trifle! I haven’t had that in ages but sherry would be lovely in it
-
This sums up things among the nitwit persuasion so perfectly.

I really enjoyed the Kennedy Center Honors last night. Now he's a bit past his prime but I always had a crush on Lorne Michaels. The Weekend Update skits last night had me howling out loud—especially Kevin Nealon saying how nice Lorne got lumped in with the rest of the honorees, hahahaha! Even with all the humor, you could see the gratitude in the eyes of the SNL alumn. It's jaw-dropping incredible what Barry Gordy accomplished in his lifetime out of his humble beginnings—discovering Diana Ross, The Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson…..so many more. My oldest sister was big in to Motown so I heard all the hits from an early age and read all the notes on every album she bought. I was very moved by Barbara Hershey's speech about Bette Midler and how they are still friends. And my thoughts on Goldie Hawn were not just that she is still so incredibly sexy but what a beautiful speaking voice she has! I wanted to hear so much more of what she had to say! I think one of these streaming networks needs to create a show for her in which to shine. I've loved her since Rowan and Martin, and Private Benjamin is one of my all time fave movies. All in all, these icons who were honored last night each deserve a full documentary on their lives and accomplishments, too many to acknowledge in one night!
P.S. So great to see our President and the First Lady, Joe and Jill Biden there!!!!!
-
Yes, the Kennedy Centers was wonderful; and something for everyone. Since I grew up listening to/watching most of the honorees & presenters, I enjoyed all of those segments. My mom was an opera buff, so she would have enjoyed that section of the program!
Now......here is something to enjoy if all the holiday hoopla has left you feeling a bit snarky.....insults are from an era "before" the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words.

2. "He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire."- Winston Churchill
3. "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure. - Clarence Darrow

5. "Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?"- Ernest Hemingway (about William Faulkner)

7. "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." - Mark Twain
8. "He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends." - Oscar Wilde
9. "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one." -George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill
10. "Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second... if there is one." - Winston Churchill, in response
11. "I feel so miserable without you; it's almost like having you here" - Stephen Bishop
12. "He is a self-made man and worships his creator." - John Bright
13. "I've just learned about his illness. Let's hope it's nothing trivial." - Irvin S. Cobb
14. "He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others." - Samuel Johnson
15. "He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up. - Paul Keating
16. "He loves nature in spite of what it did to him." - Forrest Tucker
17. "Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?" - Mark Twain
18. "His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork." - Mae West
19. "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go." - Oscar Wilde
20. "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination." - Andrew Lang (1844-1912)
21. "He has Van Gogh's ear for music." - Billy Wilder
22. "I've had a perfectly wonderful evening. But I'm afraid this wasn't it." - Groucho Marx
23. The exchange between Winston Churchill & Lady Astor: She said, "If you were my husband I'd give you poison." He said, "If you were my wife, I'd drink it."
24. "He can compress the most words into the smallest idea of any man I know." - Abraham Lincoln
25. "There's nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won't cure." -- Jack E. Leonard
26. "They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge." -- Thomas Brackett Reed
27. "He inherited some good instincts from his Quaker forebears, but by diligent hard work, he overcame them." -- James Reston (about Richard Nixon)

Hahahahaha! Totally love these, Ruth!
-
Great quotes, wish I could remember them for an appropriate conversational insert. But, alas, that will not happen
-
magiclight,
Those were my thoughts as well 😂.
-
Ruth, those quotes are wonderful and a few could be applied to the former autocrat and his cronies as well as some of the repugnicans still in the news. Thanks for sharing.

You are here to evolve and make your consciousness high
You are here to dance, sing and celebrate life.
You are here to help others to make their life happy.
We are here not to compete, but to learn, evolve and excel.
We are not here to make divisions in the name of prophets and religions.
We are here to encompass the world with love and light.
- Amit Ray -
Count me in on Ruth's list. Cracked me up. Betrayal, many are a perfect fit for some of those Reps. I also adored the meme which couldn't be more spot on.

And he got boo'ed for it too.

"First day of class, the law teacher walked in." The first thing he did was ask for the name of a student sitting in the front row:
- What's your name ?
- My name is Nelson.
- Get out of my class and never come back! he ordered him.
Nelson was confused . The teacher was heading towards him, he got up quickly, packed his stuff and left the classroom.
Everyone was scared and outraged but no one was talking.
- Very Good ! Let's get it started. What are laws for? asked the teacher.
The students were still scared, but slowly they started answering the question.
- To have order in our society.
- No ! No !
- So that the wrong people pay for their actions.
- No ! No ! Does anyone know the answer to this question?
- For justice to be done, spoke shyly a young girl.
- Finally ! Justice! But what is justice?!!
Everyone was starting to get mad at the teachers attitude. However, they kept answering.
- To protect the rights of the people...
- Okay. But still ?
- To differentiate good from evil, to reward those who do good...
- Okay... so answer this question, did I act right when I kicked Nelson out of class?
Everyone was silent, no one responded.
- I want an unanimous answer !
- NO !
Everyone was silent, no one responded.
- I want an unanimous answer !
- NO !
They answered with one voice.
- Could we say I did an injustice?
- Yes !
- And why has nobody done anything about it ? Why do we want laws and rules if we don't have the will to practice them? Each of you is obliged to speak up when you witness an injustice. All of them! All of them! Don't ever keep quiet again!
Go get Nelson. After all, he is the teacher, I'm from another period.
You know, when we don't stand up for our rights, dignity is lost, and dignity can't be negotiated. "

Great story, magiclight. Dignity can't be negotiated and I am all for its preservation.
Entrance to MO's office celarly states masks must be worn and notice in wiating room says phone use is prohibited. So as I go to sit down I note that woman in waiting room is scrolling through phone with her mask hanging on her chest. I asked her nicely to please put on her mask and she did. Did not have an issue with her scrolling on phone as long as it was not used to talk. What is with people that once they have crossed the threshold think that mask wearing is a suggestion and not a mandate?
Merry Christmas or Happy Hoildays according to your preference. May your day be pleasant.
-
Betrayal, your story is sadly not an isolated incident of mask rules not applying to everyone.
I am having a pleasant day, walked my dog in the rain, made my favorite Mexican hot chocolate with added marshmallows and a touch of Kahlua. After I catch up on this site, with sit with a good book. Pleasant, delightful day.
-
Mmm, Mexican hot chocolate! Do you mix it with a molina? One of my students gave me a small battery operated molina last year. Not what a traditional abuela (grandmother) would use but very efficient. Kahlu? You can’t go wrong with that, enjoy!

We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been--a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free.

I bought a roku tv, am amazed at what is available on it. I’d like to watch Morning Joe, and Rachel Maddow. Does anyone know what time the shows are on? Eastern time. Thanks! I saw them listed, didn’t click, must find again. Any other recommendations?
-
Spookie, have fun with the new tv! Dh and I are getting a smart tv soon and I look forward to the additional content that will be available. Visited with my stepson over the holiday and he’d purchased the exact same tv I plan to buy, and he was able to give me a great run-down of the many features—better than a Best Buy salesman, haha!
I don’t watch many or any news shows, but after a quick google I saw the Rachel Maddow show advertised as being on MSNBC weeknights at 9 pm, and Morning Joe from six to nine am on the same network, both shows Eastern time. Hope that helps.
