Hospital recommendation for bilateral mastectomy in Toronto
Hi everyone,
I am a high risk breast patient diagnosed with BRCA1 mutation. I wonder if anyone knows which hospital is better equipped for a bilateral mastectomy between Women's College Hospital and Mount Sinai in Toronto?

Are you asking about Breast Surgeons or Plastic Surgeons or the hospitals themselves? Both hospitals are excellent and both have excellent surgeons.
If you aren't aware, Mt. Sinai's breast surgery department is tied to Princess Margaret Hospital. I was treated at PMH and now go to the After Cancer Care Clinic at Women's College. Patients from Mt. Sinai were included at the weekly pre-surgery meeting that I attended at PMH, and I was told that my surgery might be at either PMH or Mt Sinai. The same would be true for Mt Sinai patients, who might end up having their surgery at PMH - the surgeons have operating rights at both hospitals.
Where is the high risk clinic that you go to?

Thanks for the thorough answer. I get my screening at Mt. Sinai. I have got a referral from Dr. Elser at Mt Sinai to speak with a breast surgeon who works at both Mt Sinai and WCH. Then I asked if I can look up the hospitals before I commit to which plastic surgeon I speak to (as they need to both work together). She also said if I speak to the surgeons and want a second opinion I can always speak to others. So far my screening experience ( MRI and mamogram as well as a biposy) have been great. A relative in Montreal who had breast cancer had told me about PMH and that it has a great breast program. It is very good to know that My Sinai is connected to PMH. I'm sure most doctors are good. Do you know any doctors that people always talk about having had a good experience with?

Sorry for not replying sooner... I don't sign on here every day.
I think if you go with a breast surgeon from Mt. Sinai, your reconstruction would be done by one of the PHM/UHN plastic surgeons - they are all excellent. The Mt. Sinai breast surgical services page links to the following page:
These are the PMH/UHN plastic surgeons (their clinics are usually held at UHN but sometimes might be at PMH or Mt. Sinai).

I don't know much about the WCH team, although I've heard good things about both Dr. Semple and Dr. Brown - both have been around since I was first diagnosed 16 years ago. I've never heard of the 3rd member of their plastic surgery team, Dr. Beber, but that doesn't mean that he's not good.

You might want to post a question in the Canadian forum asking about recommended Plastic Surgeons in Toronto.
As for breast surgeons, the only one I know at Mt.Sinai/PMH or WCH is Dr. McCready, who I had with both my diagnoses. He is (or was) the head of the Breast Centre at PMH but I understand that he is lightening his load - I assume he still operates but I don't know.

Thanks so much Beesie for the thorough response. I will look through the links. I feel more confident ( and extremely privileged) now about working with the team in Mt Sinai. Thanks for the tip to post in the Canadian forum.
