    As pingpong 1953 mentioned above, I - as a Canadian - don't see any reason why Canadians should be bashing America for not "sharing" the vaccine quickly enough. Everyone was scrambling to get enough vaccine in those days and confusion reigned. It was no one's fault that supplies ran short and people had to wait; it's been a long time since we've had to vaccinate the whole world for an infectious disease that no one saw coming, let alone becoming a pandemic.

    What happened happened because we - as a society - became complacent that we'd made so many medical advancements over the last decades that we'd never suffer through an epidemic/pandemic ever again. The "blame game" doesn't work under those circumstances. Should we share the vaccine with those countries less fortunate? Yes, absolutely, if at all possible, but we cannot help others deal with this if we're also sick.

    The NYTimes ran a couple of graphs today showing the difference in not merely vaccine supply, but uptake in low-income vs. wealthy countries:

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/12/09/world/vaccine-inequity-supply.html

    As I've been saying (if talking rather than typing, "till I've been blue in the face") all along--especially on the Pandemic thread, the main determinant of vaccine inequity in poor countries is not undersupply but low uptake of vaccines. (The poor countries listed are overwhelmingly in Africa). This is due to a combination of vaccine resistance/hesitancy (low information and distrust of governments) and failed logistics: inability to maintain the "cold chain," botched transportation & distribution, lack of infrastructure and planning, and a massive shortage of trained personnel to put those shots into the arms of the willing. I'm getting sick of Tedros & the W.H.O.'s sanctimonious simplistic posturing & criticism of comparatively wealthy nations, primarily the U.S. At the start of the pandemic, I found them to be a brave voice in the wilderness of a GOP government in politically-motivated denial; but they have now become just as political. And I am frustrated that my most progressive (I hate the term "woke") friends seem to be taking up that banner.

    The FDA is allowing 3rd shots for 16/17 year olds! Woohoo!!! I hope the CDC signs off on it quickly. My sweet 17 year old is high risk of severe illness and is now 8 months out from her second shot. I am increasingly concerned about her. Getting her 3rd shot would truly be the best Christmas present in the world! It would also mean my adult son could come visit (he is in another state...works with the public...and is staying away until she has that 3rd shot)! Come on!!!! Approve it and let our medical center start giving it out!!!

    (if this has been posted already...forgive me...i am so excited and relieved!)

    OH. MY. WORD.

    I just began my day by watching the video, Miriandra and it was the perfect way to head into the weekend!!!! I totally love it. The waiting area in the part where the one guy says, “if you want to, have a friend check you out” looks identical to the mammogram place I went to. Oh, and there’s even a bonus ending—-“credits” where the men strut their stuff….including Rothaford! LOL. I will most definitely be sharing this!!! Thanks for posting it!

    Hahahahaha!

    Love the video. Mirianda and the eye candy. Hard to decide which would be first since one could drag this out over months by going through the choices.

    I believe that the first test of a truly great person is his or her humility. I do not mean by humility, doubt of his or her own powers. But really great people have a curious feeling that the greatness is not in them, but through them. And they see something divine in every other person. -John Ruskin

    A friend posted this on Facebook:

    I'm fully vaccinated with my booster and, no, I don't know what's in it - neither this vaccine, the ones I had as a child, nor in the 11 secret herbs and spices at KFC, or hot dogs, or other treatments…whether it's for cancer, AIDS, the one for polyarthritis, or vaccines for infants or children.I also don't know what's in Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, or other meds, it just cures my headaches & my pains.

    I don't know what's in the ink for tattoos, vaping, Botox and fillers, or every ingredient in my soap or shampoo or even deodorants. I don't know the long term effect of mobile phone use or whether or not that restaurant I just ate at REALLY used clean foods and washed their hands.

    In short ...

    There's a lot of things I don't know and never will…

    I just know one thing: life is short, very short, and I still want to do something other than just going to work every day or staying locked in my home. I still want to travel and hug people without fear and find a little feeling of life "before".

    As a child and as an adult I've been vaccinated for mumps, measles, polio, chickenpox, and quite a few others; my parents and I trusted the science and never had to suffer through or transmit any of the said diseases and,

    I'm vaccinated and I wear a mask in public places not to please the government but:

    * To not die from Covid-19.

    * To NOT clutter a hospital bed if I get sick.

    * To hug my loved ones

    * To Not have to do PCR or antigenic tests to go to a restaurant, go on holidays and many more things to come ...

    * To live my life.

    * To see and hug my family and friends

    * For Covid-19 to be an old memory.

    * To protect us.

    Wow, what privilege, Jeff Bezos owner, though no long CEO of Amazon said nothing about the deaths of at least two workers in an Amazon warehouse hit by a tornado Friday. His only care is about cheering on his latest group of wealthy space tourists. I live in a rural area and do not have many shopping choices, but buy locally whenever possible just to avoid Amazon as the embodiment of Republican value of the wealthy class. So far no word from current Amazon CEO.

    Why I've Lost Respect For My Republican Friends

    by John Pavlovitz

    I've spent much of my life pastoring in predominately white churches in the South. Before that, I was raised in a family with many Conservatives. I've always been surrounded by Republican voters, and until very recently I could respect their positions, even when I disagreed with them. Despite our differences, I still saw them as […]

    Perhaps, indeed, there are no truly universal ethics: or to put it more precisely, the ways in which ethical principles are interpreted will inevitably differ across cultures and eras. Yet, these differences arise chiefly at the margins. All known societies embrace the virtues of truthfulness, integrity, loyalty, fairness; none explicitly endorse falsehood, dishonesty, disloyalty, gross inequity.

    Howard Gardner, I wish you words still held true but if you are a Trump Republican or one of the psychopaths sadly these words no longer ring true. Great quote that has lost luster over time.

    John Pavlovitz article is great as is the meme above.

    Posting from FB is so trueful.

    Right-wingers trust no literature or writings other than the Bible...but only the "thou shalt not" parts. Easy to understand, even if they take effort to follow. It's the messy stuff about compassion for "strangers" and the unfortunate, they find troubling because the specifics are not spelled out.

    I've seen that meme. And Ruth is right: the criterion for Person of the Year is the person who has had the most effect on the world...for good or ill.

    Good news/bad news on the COVID front. Good news: Pfizer's treatment pill, if taken as soon as symptoms appear or there's a positive test result, is 90% effective against severe disease or death. The bad news: Pfizer's treatment pill...is 90% effective.... Of course, it doesn't do squat about preventing infection, because one can't take it until infected (or at least definitively-exposed), as an antiviral needs a virus to kill. But the COVIDiot maskholes are doing the happy dance--if they get sick all they have to do is pop the pill, never mind how many people they'd be infecting before it kicks in--and never mind if the pandemic never goes away. At Union Health today, Bob already had a cop & a firefighter refuse boosters and demand the pill....which isn't available yet. (And there's the pesky little matter of the 10% of hospitalizations & deaths it doesn't prevent.

    House is about to vote on a criminal contempt referral for Mark Meadows. The Sen. temporarily ditched the filibuster to raise the debt limit and prevent default. And Sen. Warnock of GA gave an impassioned speech early this evening urging them to do it again, just this once, to pass voting rights legislation. But "Manchinema" are blathering again about the need for bipartisanship...
