I was reading my mammogram results and it mentions Focal Asymmetry on both breast. I should point out this is my very first mammogram. I’ve been called back for a bilateral ultrasound. My Aunt is a two time breast cancer survivor. So whatever happens I got this.

What a lot of us were surprised to learn here is that genetic or familial cancer connections are actually not common - I think the number I've seen was about 15%. Both my mother and a paternal aunt had breast cancer, and my genetic testing showed no connection. Since this was your first mammogram, it's quite usual for more imaging to happen so your doctor has the most accurate baseline for future comparisons.

I'm just reaching out for a little support. I'm six years out from my lumpectomy and radiation therapy. I just received my first "not perfect" mammo since my cancer treatment. They found several small items, which they believe are benign findings, but would like further investigation on the left breast to examine "focal asymmetry". I'm unfamiliar with this term except for the basic information I have found online but have increased fear since my cancer was on the left. I go in for diagnostic mammo and ultrasound tomorrow. Just wondered if anyone has went through something like this and if you all had any thoughts, suggestions, advice. I know focal asymmetry isn't always bad news but wonder if the risk increases for those post cancer.

Dx 12/2014 (found during lumpectomy for what was believed to be benign), Interductal carcinoma Left, 4cmx5cm6.5cm, ER+, BRCA- Surgery 12/2014 Lumpectomy: Left; Radiation Therapy 4/2015-5/2015

I got called back for a diagnostic mammo & an ultrasound EVERY SINGLE TIME for over 25 years - until they finally did find something. I was told it meant that it was hard to "see" things in my breasts. I know It's hard, but try not to worry too much in advance.

A family friend reminded me my cousin is a radiologist and she could looked at the report. She did. I feel better now and December 17th doesn’t seem too far away now.
