Hello,

I have very dense breast and I’ve had a few biopsies done in the past. They were BIRAD 3 with one being a 4. I recently had a mammogram and then ultrasound done and now I need another biopsy. The area of concern was labeled 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.6 cm irregular hypoechoic lesion with a BIRAD 4. Normally, the nurse would have me make an appointment with the radiologist for the biopsy and my obgyn would contact me with the results. However, this time before I left they had me also make an appointment with a breast surgeon as well. I’m just concerned that they are preparing for it to be cancer that’s why they had me make the appointment with the surgeon. Has anyone else had to do that? Also, is the measure considered taller than wider?
Thank you

    Hi C4hall,

Sorry you are going through this stressful time.

Only the biopsy results will tell if the area of concern is something benign or not. Sounds like you have been monitored very closely in the past, and this time they are also being very diligent. All of that is good news. I don't think there is a secret code by which, if you are referred to a breast surgeon, that means they know you have cancer, but they won't tell you. I also had very dense breasts, and my obgyn referred me to a breast surgeon for the annual breast exams, this was like 12 years before I had cancer. So I would not read too much into that. Since your tests show an area of concern, it is not a bad idea to consult a breast surgeon, whether the biopsy comes out benign or not. That sounds like a good plan to me.

Try to be distracted and busy until you get the results, and try to not let your mind race to catastrophic thoughts. Hopefully, your biopsy will come out benign. But, if your biopsy comes positive for cancer, you will be able to deal with that cancer; you will learn what to do, step by step; you will get a diagnosis, a type and subtype for the cancer, and a plan for treatment; and you will find support. That is, IF you get there. In the meantime, breath deeply, take good care of yourself, keep your anxiety in check -and know you can deal with whatever comes your way.

    Best of luck

Thank you so much for replying. I agree I’m going to focus on other things and keep my anxiety in check. It’s hard, but I know worrying won’t do any good.

Besides laughing gulls good counsel, trying to predict what your situation might be based on what appointment is made, what order things are done or the expression on a medical tech or doctors face is not going to be fruitful. Waiting is difficult but trying to read more into the situation by means other than biopsy results doesn’t work and will make you crazy with anxiety. Take care
