Slightly concerned but not panicked…. Mri results
Hi everyone. I'm new here. 41 year old female. My last mammo with ultrasound was this past May2021. All was clear. I had it done at a new place - a breast center- so they measured by risk for breast cancer to be just at 20%. Dense breasts, higher BMI, and a family history of other cancers. They recommended a breast MRI to be done 6 months after ( so a few weeks ago) so i would alternate between a mammo with U/S and an MRI every 6 months.
They saw 2 enhanced areas on my left breast and called me back in for a second look ultra sound. They couldn't find anything on the ultra sound. So I am scheduled for an mri guided biopsy of the 2 spots in a few weeks right after my period ends. I didn't ask for a copy of the results as I'm only just now familiar with the bi- rads from reading these posts. The breast specialist was not panicked and made me feel very calm about this. She explained the high false positive rate of the mri's to me. Anyone else going through something similar? I'm trying to stay positive but don't want to be completely caught off guard if it is cancer….

That is a lot of screening unless you are BRCA or have a previous breast cancer...
I started alternating mammo/MRI after my diagnosis. I had one experience with an MRI that resulted in an MRI biopsy and came back benign. Hoping the same for you!
Even knowing the high rate of false positives, it was still a scary few days. It made me second guess whether I want to stick to that screening routine.

Salamandra-
Thank you for your response. I am not BRCA positive and have never had cancer. I was ignorant to all the different screenings, and thought it would be great to have an MRI when it was offered and my insurance covered it. ….. but now that Im reading these forums, I realize it might be a bit excessive. If everything comes back ok, I will need to have a serious conversation with my md as far as how I want to continue screening… as this waiting period is nerve wrecking. If they find a malignancy I suppose it’s served it’s purpose! Thank you again for responding.

I was so thankful to read through these posts on this message board during my moments of worry. So, I’m writing this update to possibly help someone else who finds themselves lurking here!
I had the 2 spots biopsied via an mri guided biopsy. Both areas came back benign- Thank God.Breast mri’s are super sensitive and have a high false positive rate. Knowing this made me feel better and hopeful.
Hope my experience helps to calm someone’s nerves!
