Hello and thank you all for this forum. I am 43 y/o and had my first mammogram on 11/8. Then they sent me for an ultrasound. I had absolutely no symptoms. Ultrasound came back as solid irregular mass with lobular margins 7 o’clock position 11cm from the nipple. It appears to extend from skin almost to chest wall. Color Doppler shows increased flow. Impression: lobular mass with increased flow. Again, 1.5 x 1.3 x 1.6cm. BIRADS 4

There was no letter attached to the BIRADS. I am terrified. I have no breast changes, no palpable mass. The radiologist showed me the area said it was suspicious and that there was one single vessel to the area. My brain shut down and I asked nothing My biopsy is Monday. Any insight that anyone can give would be so appreciated. Blessings to everyone of you!

Hi Laura, not sure if this will help but just the 4 with no letter and of course not being a 5 is saying that the reason for biopsy is it is suspicious and percentage wise is good that it will be ruled something benign. Best wishes to you on the biopsy, let us know how it goes.

Thank you so much for your reply! This forum has been so helpful even while I was just lurking around building the confidence to post. I hope all works out. I will definitely post once I know.

I remember when I had mine they gave me a tiny little ice pack to put in my bra to help keep swelling down from the site afterwards. Had a tiny butterfly bandage over the site and had to leave it for a few days I know. Keep us posted and will keep good thoughts your way.

Thank you for replying and sharing your experience. I’m really not scared of the biopsy, I’m scared of the results. I haven’t gotten many answers regarding what this might be and when I asked about no letter with my BIRADS 4 the tech told me “we don’t use letters just 1-5.” Which didn’t help me at all….all of you are your experiences have been my only go to. Thank you for your good vibes

Laura. I've also heard that sometimes they will call it a BIRADS 4 to help get it approved by the insurance. I know that won't really help your worrying. The first time I had cancer, they called it a BIRADS 5 and the radiologist wanted me back that same afternoon for the core needle biopsy.

I hope you can have a relatively peaceful weekend. It's so hard having to wait. We all get that and understand.

I will follow this thread and look for your updates.

    (((hugs)))

4 is the required rating for a biopsy.

Biopsies after first mammograms are somewhat common because they need to figure out what is normal for your breast. There's a good chance you'll end with a marker and a useful baseline.

If it it does turn out to be cancer, finding it on a regular screening mammogram also bodes well for it being early stage and very treatable.

But in the end, odds mean nothing when it comes to the individual, and waiting for a result is never ever fun. Hang in there!

Hi Salamandra! Yes hopefully you’re right. This was in fact my first mammogram so they had no other comparisons. Thank you for your reply, all of your words really give a sense of comfort. Hugs and blessings to you!
