Bra Recommendation for Radiation?

Hi there. I have my planning appt. for radiation next Thurs.

I read that after treatment (at home) you should wear a "soft", non-underwire bra to prevent irritation.

Can anyone provide a couple of recommendations?

ALL of my bras are underwire, and not sure how "soft" they are. I'm 63 and need a very supportive bra.

    Debbie,

I was completely disrobed from the waist up for my planning & each of my treatments. They would not have allowed me to wear a bra at all. However, as your treatment goes on you might want to wear a soft bra. It depends on where the beam is directed and how much inflammation you have. Mine was not in an area where my regular bras would rub so I never had to purchase anything else.

    Best of luck,

    Jane

I went bra-less the entire time. I bought a bunch of 100% cotton tees so that's all I had against my skin. I threw most of them away afterward as you'll never get the aquaphor stains out of them.

Another thing I did when I had to wear a bra was to put it over the cotton tee. I drove more carefully too. I thought what if I'm in an accident and someone sees me like this? LOL

You are doing great, macdebbie. Hope planning and treatment goes well.

ctmbsikia, ha ha. The driving comment cracked me up.

There's no way I can go without a bra. I have very heavy breasts and I need a bra so they don't hurt. I've been sleeping in a bra every night since my surgery a month ago.

Good hint about the t-shirts though! I was going to wear new good ones I just good. Now I'll buy some cheap ones I can throw away.

So you put the cream on after the sessions not before?

Hi jhl. Thanks for the info. I meant after the treatment - on the way home and at home - not during treatment itself. I've read it's best to wear a soft cotton, non-underwire bra.

I'm guessing (but don't know) that since I am having whole breast radiation the underwire might irritate me.

Debbie - I bought inexpensive, front closing, cotton Fruit of the Loom bras at Walmart. I think Danskin also makes something similar. Again, like the T-shirts you won't want them as a permanent part of your trousseau. There's not much support, but I agree - you won't want underwire.

I've never worn underwires. I just used a few of my older stretchy bras during radiation because the markings that are inked on the breast tend to rub onto the bra. You can get cheap stretchy ones at Target or similar stores.

I hate wearing bras! I haven't worn an underwire in years. I'm about a 38C so I totally get that you need to wear one. Maybe I'm 1/2 hippie? After having a post surgery seroma (which was probably from not wearing one!) I had to go to the high impact sports bras. That's pretty much all I wear now, and a cotton little one (no support but something) to bed. When I go bra less now I find my breasts (what's left of them) don't like it and they let me know! When I'm doing stuff and sweating I sometimes still put that cotton tank top on and zip the sports bra over. It looks ridiculous but it works for me. My late husband called it "my vest" Cotton will be your friend. Aquaphor will go on after your treatment and maybe once more per day if it fits into your schedule. Good luck!

ctmbsikia - I doubt you caused your seroma! I've been wearing a bra 24/7 since my surgery and I still have a big one. How long did it take for yours to go away?

I'll have to look for some cotton bras.

I'm getting nervous about the radiation because I have an inherited condition called Icthyosis, which makes my skin naturally extremely dry. The RO even commented on it. I may start a more intensive than normal regimen a few weeks ahead in preparation.

    Hello!

Your RO will give your their guidelines for creams and lotions. I found that mine were different than what I read on here…mine said Aquaphor right after treatment and at bedtime. Nothing on the skin for 4 hrs prior to treatment.

I bought these bras for after surgery, then bought a few more once I found out that I shouldn't wear underwire bras during treatment. Reason being, the underwire will rub at your skin and during radiation your skin will not regenerate the same, potentially leaving you with open wounds. No thank you!!

Oh, what ctmbsikia wrote reminded me - I bought a multi pack of men's tank type undershirts and wore those under my bra when I was slathered up with Aquaphor. Huh, nice that I'm forgetting some of that now! And I'd wear them braless around the house and sleeping. It kept the grease off my clothes.

Yes, front hook cotton bras from Walmart. This kind of thing

    https://www.fruit.com/fruit-of-the-loom/women/bras...

They aren't expensive, and they're reasonably comfortable. You might find that the bras you have are fine, at least at first. As your skin gets more damaged, you will probably appreciate something softer. But either way, the gooey Aquafor or other ointments or creams might ruin them, so don't wear your nicest ones!

my PT recommended Genie bra for support. It’s like a sports bra so pretty tight but soft. You step into it which is weird. Pretty cheap, got a 3 pack from Amazon for $30 something. I typically don’t wear one but have tolerated these well which is saying something…

    macdebbie!

I have very heavy (droopy) breasts as well, what did you end up wearing during radiation that worked for you?

Or anyone else with large pendulous breasts out there who has advice! Currently I'm wearing: https://evelynbobbie.com/products/defy-bra or https://evelynbobbie.com/products/beyond-bra

The nurse said they were OK except they are not cotton and the area they hit under my arm and breast may rub the radiation areas. I'm a 38G so this will be tough.

    Thanks!

    Bree

Hi Bree. I searched everywhere and finally found this bra which was developed by a radiation oncologist. It is SO soft - and the band is low so does rub in the armpit area or on the lymph node scar. I found it supportive and comfortable due to the wide band. It also has lightly formed cups that you can remove if you want.

It was expensive, so I wore a thin soft pima cotton light fitting tank top under the bra so that I didn't ruin it with the oils/goop I was putting on my breast.

Here's the site. Something to check out anyway. www.makemerry.com
