I could take tamoxifen for only two years. I developed uterine polyps and was advised to discontinue. Has anyone had this experience.

    I finished tamoxifen for a total of 5 years, but I had uterine polyps multiple times. All were benign.

    What were your symptoms of uterine polyps and how long after starting tamoxifen did you get them? Did you take the full 20mg standard dose?

    This is something that I am already worrying about having started taking tamoxifen. Thanks.

    My symptoms were light vaginal bleeding. Mine were benign but I was told to discontinue. I got them around the two year mark. Yes I was taking the full dose.

    Thanks, Sears. That is what my MO said to look out for, the spotting. He acted like it was no big deal (it may have just been his way of expressing himself), but endometrial polyps and uterine cancer are a big deal to me. I am going to ask my PCP is she recommends a pelvic ultrasound as a baseline. I already have a certain feeling in that area that I didn't have before the drug and haven't felt since menopause.

    You may not develop polyps. Not everyone does. It would probably be best to take it and see what happens. Another person answered here that she took it for the full five years even with the polyps. Your doctor will certainly advise you regarding the best way to go.

    Yes, I took the full 20 mg dose. I also had uterine polyps _before_ I started tamoxifen. I had several pelvic ultrasounds. I got polyps (or at least a D+C for dysfunctional bleeding) about every 1.5 years. I went into menopause shortly after finishing tamoxifen, and had no uterine polyps after that.
