I'm scheduled for an ultrasound and another mammogram next Friday. I'm worried sick. what does this even mean

Impression

IMPRESSION:
Indeterminate bilateral breast asymmetries.

FINAL ASSESSMENT:
BI-RADS 0 - Incomplete: Need Additional Imaging Evaluation and/or
Comparisons with Prior Studies

RECOMMENDATION:
Additional Breast Imaging to be Determined at Time of Diagnostic Study,
Which May Include Mammography and/or Focused Ultrasound.

The Patient will be contacted to schedule additional testing.

A written summary in lay terms of the findings and recommendations,
including breast density, will be provided to the patient.

Interpretation was made with the benefit of CAD.

Narrative

SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY WITH CAD AND DIGITAL BREAST TOMOSYNTHESIS

DATE:
October 20, 2021 11:02 AM

CLINICAL HISTORY:
44 y/o female for screening mammography. No family history of breast
cancer.

COMPARISON:
Prior mammograms most recent September 24, 2020

PROCEDURE:
CC, XCCL and MLO views of both breasts were obtained. Bilateral DBT views
were obtained in the CC and MLO projections as well.

FINDINGS:
The breast tissue is heterogeneously dense, which may obscure small
masses. There is an indeterminate round circumscribed asymmetry in the
right medial breast middle depth 3 o'clock position seen on right CC
tomosynthesis (frame 40/76. and also an indeterminate round circumscribed
asymmetry in the right upper breast posteriorly on MLO tomosynthesis
(frame 17/73).

In the left lateral breast posteriorly best seen on CC view is and
indeterminate asymmetry (frame 42/79).

Jen44, sorry you are facing this. Birads-0 simply means they don't have enough information to tell what they're looking at, and they need more images. Your breasts are dense and mammograms have trouble seeing through that. So the indeterminate asymmetries could be cysts, which would not be at all unusual in your age group. Cysts can come and go, so not seeing them on your prior mammogram as a comparison isn't necessarily worrisome.

So yes, it could be troublesome, but for right now all it means is that they need more information.

It's another week away. The week will seem very long but do your best to find other things to do and think about. If you can spend time outside, or with friends, or playing with your kids if you have them, please enjoy that.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi--Just wanted to add that round and circumscribed are good signs! Yes, let us know how you make out with everything.

When breasts are compressed between the plates, the tissue can get squished in ways that obscure the view. It can be as simple as that. Again, yes, it could be something, but it could be nothing to worry about at all. Don't plan for bad things! I know that is hard to avoid. hugs ...
