Itchy and Painful Nipple and No One is Taking Me Seriously

Hello All,

I think I’m slowly loosing my mind. Just a brief introduction, I come from a family with history of cancer, so I’m naturally paranoid about everything. My grandmothers and my mother all struggled with variations of breast and ovarian cancer. Currently, I’m 33 yrs old with a beautiful 3 month old. We’ve been exclusively breastfeeding and I’ve noticed changes in my right nipple. It’s so itchy, irritated and pain is radiating throughout this breast.

Initially they tried to tell me it was breastfeeding related, but I assured them since these symptoms started almost 3 weeks I have not let my daughter feed from this particular breast. My nipple and breast haven’t gotten better. I’ve been to the doctor twice and been put on antibiotics for infections; they haven’t helped. I finally got my ultrasound referral for this Monday. Naturally, I’m petrified.

Any advise on how to handle the aftermath would be immenselyyyy helpful. If the ultrasound comes back with good news and I’m still experiencing these issues, what would you all suggest I try next or look into? If it’s bad news... I don’t know what to do or think.

After reading so many brave stories on these forums, I know and have learned you need to be your own health advocate. I just need a little advise on what my next moves should be.

Thank you so much,

Elena

Nobody here can even begin to tell you what is going on. But you are in the process of getting it evaluated which is good. Did he doctor say whether the ultrasound is to rule out Paget's disease? Another possibility, non-cancer, have they considered thrush? It is a fungal infection that can happen with a breastfeeding mom and baby, and antibiotics are not the treatment for it. The baby's mouth should be checked for signs of thrush, too. Did you see a PCP? Perhaps see a dermatologist, and if they do not know what is going on, a breast specialist like a breast surgeon. And stay away from Dr. Google, who is not a very good doctor at all.

Thank you so much for your response...

The doctor did mention Paget’s and said it would also help eliminate any other irregularities.

I’ve mentioned thrush several times but he keeps coming back to mastitis because of my random fevers.

All I know is, my nipple is so painful and itchy as is the rest of my breast. I just keep thinking back to mother’s struggle and how no one took her concerns to heart either before it was too late.

I appreciate the responses... sincerely! For what I’ve witnessed happen to the women in the family, I’m extremely paranoid. As I’ve continued to stress to my doctor, something is wrong. I know my body well enough. I’m just really trying to take deep breaths and wait for Monday.
