Period returns after completing 10 years of Tamoxifen

Options

Hi, I'm not new here but returning after many years of being gone. I had stage 3A IDC at the age of 35. My periods stopped after my first chemo treatment 12/2010. I finished chemo and radiation then began taking Tamoxifen 6/2011. My periods never returned. I am currently 46 And actually stopped Tamoxifen June of this year. I just had my yearly Gyn check up 2 weeks ago but The night before and day of I had pretty bad right ovary pain. It felt just like ovulation pains I had years ago.Dr scheduled me for an ultrasound this week but I have noticed today I'm now bleeding like a light period. I even have the lower back cramps like I did when I was having my periods before cancer.

Has anyone had they periods return this many years out after stopping taking Tamoxifen?

Hi Kaseydombrowski, we have heard that your periods may start again - or get heavier for those who continue to get periods while on Tamoxifen - once you stop taking it, as long as you have not gone through menopause naturally while taking the drug. In other words, you have likely not gone through menopause naturally yet.

That said, it's probably worth letting your doctor know, and just keep track of it.

Hope to hear from others, but congratulations on finishing your 10 years.

    Warmly,

I was 40 when diagnosed, at the time had avery regular period. Period stopped after first chemo and had no bleeding until I came off Tamoxifen and started AI. Gyno did blood work and consulted with my oncologist, it was determined that my ovaries were firing up again so I had to start Zolodex. I had another episode of bleeding so more investigation. I ended up having a D&C and she found a fibroid that's was causing the bleeding. I hope you get answers soon.

Thanks for posting your experience. I go Friday for an ultrasound so I’m hoping it’s nothing. It was quite nice not having a period for 10 years.
