Waiting to have biopsies on Friday

Hello,

I recently turned 40 and went for a screening mammogram and ultrasound at the suggestion of my ob/gyn. I received a call from the breast center the morning after my appointment saying I needed to come back for more images. I wasn't too worried because I have a history of breast cysts and lumpy tissue. After returning and completing the diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, the radiologist told me I have 3 masses that need to be biopsied, 2 on the right side and 1 on the left. I made an appointment for this Friday for 3 core needle biopsies and I am very nervous. I had 2 biopsies in my 20s that turned out to be fibroadenomas, so I am hoping that these will be the same. I guess what concerns me is that they found 3 separate growths. Here is the report.

The breasts are extremely dense, which lowers the sensitivity of mammography.

Mammo: There is grouped calcifications in the superior aspects of both breasts. Short interval follow up recommended.

Ultrasound:

Right breast:

At 12:00 N6 there is a heterogenous mass measuring 1.6 x 1.2 x 0.7 cm. Ultrasound guided biopsy recommended

At 10-11 o'clock N 6-7 there is a round heterogenous mass measuring 0.9 x 0.9 x 0.5 cm. Ultrasound guided biopsy recommended

Left breast:

At 2:00 N1 there is a round hypo echoic mass measuring 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.5 cm. Ultrasound guided biopsy recommended

Bi-Rads Category 4: Suspicious

How common is it for women to get breast biopsies? Is it unusual for someone to have 5 different biopsies by the age of 40? I have no family history of breast cancer except for my mom's first cousin, but that seems a bit distant and I doubt it is relevant.

I tried to research a bit online and I read that Bi-Rads 4 could be anywhere between 2-94% indicative of malignancy, which seems like an insanely wide range to me, so I have no sense of what to expect. Is anyone familiar with this type of terminology? Googling just made me anxious so I decided to join this forum instead.

Thank you for listening!

BklynGal81, welcome to Breastcancer.org! We know the waiting can be really hard, but please, keep in mind that many, many biopsies come back benign as you can already tell. If you can, keep busy the next few days, to keep your mind off the worst case scenario.

Here is some reliable information from our main site that will help you understand some of the terminilogy of your report:

    Hi fellow Brooklynite,

That's very nervewracking for sure. FWIW, I feel like I have seen many similar posts on this board that turn out to be benign even with many lumps being biopsied at once.

Birads 4 can be a wide net. It's the lowest rating that will get a biopsy covered by insurance, so my understanding is that it can be anything from 'This doesn't seem like cancer but I better scan it just in case' to 'this looks like it could be cancer but it could also be other things.' Whereas in a case of 'this looks like cancer but I need to scan it to confirm' would be birads 5.

So you have plenty of reason to be optimistic. If only that were easy!

    Hang in there!

just want to send support bklyn! BIRADS 4 is about 75% benign on call back and about 80% benign on biopsy. I can understand your anxiety, esp. with a number of areas. I too have seen others on this site who have had multiple areas of biopsy (at the same time) come back benign. I had several call backs and two biopsies (benign) in my late 40's/early 50's before my DCIS diagnosis. Hoping the best for you - please let us know...

Thank you all for your support. I really appreciate you taking the time to post responses. I am feeling more hopeful today than I did when I first found out I needed the biopsies. It’s still scary, but 80% chance of being benign is better than I expected. Now I just want to get them over with on Friday! This experience has given me a new understanding of the word anxiety. I will keep you posted as to how it goes.

    P.S. It’s nice to meet a Brooklyn neighbor. :

Thank you so much for checking up on me. It makes me feel less alone in all this. The biopsy procedure was unpleasant, but I made it through and am glad it is over with. I ended up having 4 incisions and the doctor took 5 samples at each mass, so it was thorough. I had some trouble getting one of the incisions to stop bleeding but it finally stopped after applying pressure. Now I am at home resting and planning on taking it easy this weekend. I am moving slowly at the moment and I think it’s because I had so many biopsies on the same day, and on both sides. The last time I had a biopsy it was just one area and it was less painful. The doctor said I should receive a call with the results by Wednesday. Please send good vibes my way for benign results!

Well, I met with the breast surgeon to go over my results and everything is benign! I am so relieved! Most of the findings were completely normal - apocrine cyst, papillary apocrine metaplasia, fibrocystic changes, and mammary duct ectasia. One of the things they found is a rare benign tumor called PASH. I've never heard of this before and there is not much information online about it. The doctor says I need to monitor it because they sometimes grow quickly and need to be removed, so I will return in 6 months for follow up testing. I was already scheduled for follow up mammogram/sonogram in 6 months due to some calcifications they found. Have any of you ever heard of or been diagnosed with PASH?

The only annoying thing is that I have developed a hematoma on my right breast and it is painful. The doctor says it could take a few months for it to fully heal, so I am still wearing sports bras and doing warm compresses. But I can't complain, I got benign results and the hematoma is temporary. Thanks everyone for your good vibes.

Hi! I actually JUST got diagnosed with PASH today. I think my doctor wasn't even too sure what it was, or at the very least was very surprised that it was benign. I go back in 6 months for a follow up.
