Biopsy on Wednesday.. First time and extremely worried..
Hi I’m a 36 year old.I have very dense breasts. No breast cancer in my family. Went for a mammogram and sono and they found a 0.6 cm oval hypoechoic mass with indistinct margins in the left breast. Has anyone have something like this! Is it always cancer or can it be something else?? Please someone give me some insight. I’m driving myself crazy..

Hi AnxiousAlways, sorry you find yourself here. Imaging is very imperfect and they often cannot tell what they're looking at, hence the need for futher investigation.
What BIRADS score did they give it on your radiology report?
-
hi thank you for responding! They gave it a 4. I have mammograms every year. And a breast exam from my dr a couple of months ago.
-
so BIRADS 4 is benign about 70% of the time. This is the category they give to things that look a odd but they just can't tell what it is.
don't try to read meaning into what they wrote in the report - those terms are descriptive, not diagnostic. It's just radiologists speaking to each other & saying " I saw this and it looked like this" We can't tell from those words what the lesion is - hence the need for a biopsy.
The biopsy will be ok. If it's a regular ultrasound guided core biopsy , they will just inject some freezing. That should the only little pinch of pain you feel - just like dental anesthesia if you've had that. After that you won't feel pain but might feel pressure. The tool that takes the sample makes kind of a loud noise like a stapler so they sometimes count down when they're going to do it just so you aren't surprised by the noise and don't flinch. You can keep your eyes closed the whole time and just pretend you're not there. After you get a bandaid and some places give you an icepack to tuck into your bra. I went grocery shopping on the way home after one of my biopsies if that helps put it in perspective
you can read more about biopsies here https://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/testing/type...
try to relax & not get head of yourself with worry. One step at a time. Best wishes

One more thing….they couldn't really see it on the sono and the sonographer said it was blending in .. could that be a good sign. Maybe it was always there and couldn’t see it until now

Welcome Anxious! Different imaging tests pick up or don't pick up different things which is why they use mammo, ultrasound and MRI (not meaning they always use all 3) depending on concern, what/if things show or not, etc. Hold onto what moth said about BIRADS 4. I've had a few of those and lower, several call backs over the years, 3 biopsies and all came back benign until it didn't. The "didn't" turned about to be DCIS which is still a pre-cancer/pre-invasive cancer.... Hoping one of these will be true for you as well! Please let us know once you hear something. And yes on the ice after biopsy!!! It will help soooo much to ice the rest of that day on and off consistently and maybe even a little the next morning...
