Asymmetry & Architectural Distortion, or not?
Hi there,
This forum has been such a wonderful source of information for me as I have lurked here for the past few days, and in past years. Despite my best efforts, I'm a bit anxious, so I hope you kind folks don't mind me sharing here.
I had a screening mammo on Sept 3, and was called back the next day to schedule a diagnostic. Went back in a week later, where they took several more images of my left breast, but couldn't seem to find what they were looking for. Booked for an ultrasound.
I do have two palpable lumps on the right side. So, I was surprised when they wanted to take a closer look at the left and not the right. I got a copy of my reports today, and it doesn't appear that my right side lumps were detected on the mammogram at all. My initial screening report says:
“There is an asymmetry with associated architectural distortion in the medial left breast. In the right breast, no suspicious masses, calcifications or other abnormalities are seen. BiRads 0"
The diagnostic report says that “the screening detected asymmetry with potential architectural distortion is not reproduced on repeat diagnostic and spot compressed views. Summation of normal fibroglandular tissue vs true finding obscures by heterogeneously dense parenchyma? BiRads 0"
It recommends ultrasound and if that's normal, repeat mammogram in 6 months.
Two 0s in a row. I hate uncertainty! Anyway, I'll be having an ultrasound of my left breast on Monday. Meanwhile, I have these two lumps in my right breast which weren't detected on the mammogram. I have an appointment to speak to my doctor tomorrow and will ask about a right side u/s as well. I suspect they are likely cysts, but I would like to make sure. Dense breasts sure make good hiding places. Yikes!
I'm not sure if I even had a question. I just needed to share and I thank you for having me here.

Ask about an MRI for the lumps that aren't showing up... If they truly think they are cysts then they may have another recommendation, possibly ultrasound as you will ask. Best with the upcoming ultrasound... it would certainly be maddening to have 2 consecutive BIRADS 0.... Hopefully you get more information Monday! Hang in there...

Hi LivinLife!
I sure appreciate your advice, thank you! I will request an MRI should the ultrasound not tell us anything more. Maddening, indeed! That said, I shall continue trying not to worry about what I don’t know. Channelling my nervous energy into fall housekeeping seems to be working Many thanks for your well wishes!Warmly,
Snufkin
