Had Core Biopsy Yesterday

Options

Hello, everyone. As much as I value the help and support I received from this community during my bout with stage 1, grade 1 IDC in 2011, I really, really, really hoped I'd never have to use this message board again. Sigh. Yesterday, at my annual mammo and ultrasound, my radiologist found a small, densely packed cluster of microcalcifications that weren't there last year. She did a core biopsy, and I may get the results tomorrow (Saturday) but most likely on Monday. She thinks it could be DCIS. I'm just so tired of cancer--my mother was just diagnosed with follicular lymphoma literally last week, and my father is in hospice with stage 4 adenocarcinoma.

I know DCIS is not that big a deal when it comes to breast cancer, but since it's my second time and in the same breast, I'm mulling over a unilateral mastectomy with reconstruction.

Anyhoo, it's nice to meet all of you newbies. I wish it were under better circumstances for all of us.

Thank you so much! Yes, looks like we had identical cancers right down to the left side.

Hi Jamiebeth, My name is Carol and I noticed your post about your recent biopsy. Like the others who replied, I know what it feels like waiting for biopsy results - the time seems to drag. The waiting is horrible. I was diagnosed in 2013 with stage 1, grade 1, 1 cm. IDC and had lumpectomy and radiation. Biopsies in July 2019 and Feb. of this year showed 2 cm. of micro-calcifications. DCIS was found in the 2nd biopsy. Since I had radiation in that breast, mastectomy was recommended and I'm scheduled for that in a month. It's been a bit of shock for about the recurrence and having a mastectomy. I elected to have no reconstruction. I'm 65 and small breasted and an external prothesis should be fine.

So sorry to hear about your parent's health and pray everything works out for you. Please keep us all posted. I'm glad you shared.

I'm so sorry about your DCIS diagnosis. We'd like to think we can put our breast cancer behind us, and many of us can, but then sometimes...yeah.

Please let me know how your mastectomy surgery goes. Are you having a unilateral or bilateral? I'm in the same boat as you, so if I do have DCIS, I'd need a mastectomy as well, but I plan on a unilateral with reconstruction.

Thanks for responding to my post,

    Jamie

Jamie, I'm having a unilateral. I'm OK with that; I see no reason to remove the other healthy breast. Yes, I had pretty much put breast cancer behind me and hitting the 6 year mark of NED. We just never know, but we will get through this. I wish you the best. I'll let you know how the mastectomy goes and please keep me posted and let us know how your biopsy turned out.

Hey! Well, the biopsy turned out to be negative. THAT biopsy. Sigh. A year and a half later and another core needle biopsy later, and I was diagnosed with DCIS. I just had a unilateral mastectomy ten days ago. Double sigh. I'm ok; they got it all and I won't need further treatment. But doesn't cancer suck? Hope you're doing ok!

Yikes with all you've been through! Glad surgery went well - sorry you had to deal with all this YET again. Hoping you heal quickly and don't have another recurrence.... I imagine you'll be looking over your shoulder for a bit though....
