Just need ing some advice
Hello All!
I was diagnosed IDC Grade 3, Stage 1, Triple Positive, with no visible lymph node involvement, just at the end of July, 2021. Tumor size about 1.8 cm and is chilling in the upper inner quadrant. (I've name her Tammy because humor is my defense mechanism) I've met with a wonderful team and we have a solid plan with surgery at the end of September and chemo starting end of October. My question(s) are ever since my diagnosis, I've become extremely up close and personal with my arm pit/ side of breast area (looking for lymph nodes). I've recently felt a hard lump and thick/tough spot. My question is this... my doctors are 2.5 hours away and I can't promise that this is a new lump/tough area. When I went to the doctor's in the beginning of August, we ran the whole gambit of tests and scans (X-rays, ultrasounds, MRI's, and blood work) Do I contact them and meander down there with the possibility of it already have been checked out.... or ..... just let it be because we already have a plan in place. Would finding this change the prognosis and or treatment plan? I don't want to be a burden to them. I am an otherwise a healthy 40 year old with excellent prognosis, I don't want to take time and resources away from someone who could use it more than me. But on the other hand, I really would like to keep my excellent prognosis....

Hi. I'm so sorry you find yourself here. My advice to you would be to do whatever it is you feel comfortable with. While you had an ultrasound, do you recall if they scanned that area? Sometimes I go back and re-read test results to reassure myself when I start to get away with myself in my head. But, if this is something that is keeping you up at night and a constant worry, then there is absolutely no shame in you calling the doc. After your pathology is back from surgery you will have a clearer picture of your node status, prognosis, treatment plan. I trust it will be as you already are thinking. Good luck to you.

Hi, are you going to be having a sentinel lymph node biopsy?
I think usually what happens, esp if the surgery is weeks out from initial tests, is that you still get a fresh physical exam and can raise any issues with the surgeon then. You might just be feeling a regular lymph node. They're there all the time...it's when they're enlarged that we worry.
But if it's something that feels new to you and if you can still feel it every day, I'd call it in and ask for a re-exam.
& honestly, the other thing I would say is that with a Grade 3 tumor and your relatively young age, I'd ask to be put on a cancellation list and move the surgery up. We often say on these boards that cancer is urgent but not an emergency - & we have time for tests and 2nd opinions etc, and that's all true but studies also show that delaying surgery beyond a certain point can have detrimental effects. This is a BCO article on research suggesting young women should have surgery within 6 weeks of diagnosis https://www.breastcancer.org/research-news/2013050...
You're just over the 39yo cutoff they used in their analysis, so I think it really might still apply to you. These cutoffs are kind of arbitrary, kwim....

I was also going to ask if sentinel lymph node biopsy is part of your surgery plan? Maybe a call to have someone review your diagnostics and see if it was already found? Do you have a patient portal where you can download your test results and pathology reports?
Other to consider, have you recently had a covid vaccine? That’s been known to cause enlarged lymph. Also if you are having any type of infection, sunburn, they can enlarge in their response.
Maybe start with a phone call to office then go from there.

I hope you call your doctors and get it evaluated. The most important thing is you know your body, listen to your inner voice that is directing you to investigate. There is no bother or shame in being thorough and participative in your health care. Your health is your number one priority right now. I am sorry there is such a distance involved to reach your doctors, I wish they were closer for you. Moth has some excellent recommendations in regards to pushing for earlier surgery as well.

Good advice from the others. First, if you've been pressing around a lot to see if you feel anything, that in itself can aggravate lymph nodes. So it's possible that if this is "new," it's just newly swollen and nothing very bad is happening with it.
That said, if it were me, I would call in and check with the surgeon's office. Ask to speak with the nurse, NP, or PA and explain to them what you've said here. This will not be the first time they've heard something like this. They'll have good questions for you, and good information. They might want you to come in to have it checked, and they might say, no need, it will be checked with your pre-op appointments.
Good luck.

Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for the advice. I have had to put the whole thing on hold for a bit due to insurance issues, but I've left it alone for a few days and I can't find it anymore. I am thinking it was irritated by all of the newly found attention. For those that asked, the original plan is to do a sentinal biospy when doing the lumpectomy.
