Newbie here. High risk due to family history. Had a stereotactic biopsy for calcifications 4 years ago right breast, benign. US guided biopsy on left breast yesterday, now awaiting results and hoping to hear before EOD Friday to avoid having to wait the whole weekend. I had a new lesion detected on MRI July 22, then ultrasound confirmed an irregular, oval, hypoechoic mass, with internal vascularity, .6x.7x.5 cm, BI-RADS-4. Fingers crossed it's nothing. I refuse to let negativity and worry rule me. At this point, there's nothing to worry about. Whatever it is, I will do my best to handle it with positivity. Thankfully, I have a great support network with my husband and family. And I'm so glad to have joined this community! Thanks for sending a positive thought or prayer my way - and I'm doing the same for all of you!

On a side note, I'm curious how many of you with or without a dx but going through this rollercoaster over and over again have opted for prophylactic bilateral mastectomy? I'm considering it, regardless of the outcome from this biopsy. I have implants now, and I'm due for an upgrade anyway. :) The no nipple thing bothers me, but that seems vain, and I know they have new techniques available. Would love to hear from folks who have done it and are happy they did (or not?). TIA

Hi! Thank you for your comment on my post earlier.

Just curious - both 4 years ago and now, did radiologist indicate pre-biopsy what they expect? I read on some posts here where radiologist stated things like “be ready for cancer” or “it looks like cancer.”

Mine didn’t say anything just curious what your experience was.

And yes again - I would totally have prophylactic surgery as long as long results looked natural

No, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately? I guess we'll see.). They all had poker faces. My calcification biopsy radiologist was on the fence about needing a biopsy. If I weren't high risk he would have repeated a mammo or MRI instead in 6 mos. I asked my new radiologist how this compares to that and she didn't hesitate to say, ya, this is very different. Sigh. Hopefully I'll know something in 24 hours.

Well, I'm playing the lottery tonight. My results are benign. I'm absolutely [pleasantly] shocked, as all the documentation seemed to point to a positive result. I haven't seen the documentation yet, but the nurse said it was benign and mentioned fibroadenoma. I'm feeling even more blessed as research shows these are common in women 15-35 years of age. Heck, I'm almost 48! Does this mean that my boobs are aging well? LOL I have been told I need a repeat MRI in 6 months - I'm waiting to see the documentation to see why. Maybe that's normal protocol?

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Thank you, LivinLife! Sadly, I didn't win the lottery, but I'll take the benign.

I'm giving more and more thought to prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. It's so stressful every 6 months. And when we retire in the next few years, we want to travel...I don't want to be tied to a mammo/MRI machine the rest of my life. How are you doing after your surgery? Did you end up doing reconstruction (if that's ok to ask)? Curious about your experience. Take care!

I had a nipple sparing BMX and I am very pleased with my results. On the contrary, a friend had her nipples removed and opted for tattoos. Hers, too, look amazing.

    Best of luck!!!

Hi Rrobin0200! Thank you for sharing those experiences, and so glad to hear you are pleased with the results! I know there have been so many medical/cosmetic advances over the last two decades. Have you ever seen a statistic on the % risk of developing breast cancer when keeping nipples? It's probably one number if one has never had bc vs. if one has. Interestingly, when I signed up for the research study (researchers are hoping to be able to do a blood draw to find bc genetic markers vs. having to do a biopsy), the nurse actually told me that they're starting to see in their data that women with breast tattoos may have a higher risk of bc. :( Something about because the tattoo ink/injury to skin alter the cells in that area. Obviously your friend is safe now...but I wish they'd get a warning out asap, if that's true!

Sorry on the lottery : ( though yes, benign is the most important thing : ) No reconstruction for me - I knew that going in - had an aesthetic flat closure though that was unplanned - I woke up with it... I have to minimize surgeries as much as possible due to lots of medical and healing issues so I never even considered reconstruction - I knew before DCIS I would never have reconstruction due to issues I've heard about on other health forums I frequent. This is the setting to ask - very appropriate question. If folks aren't comfortable answering they can say that though definitely an appropriate question. Best!
