Microcalcifications after breast augmentation and implants.
Hi. I posted this as a comment but wanted to start a new topic so that it doesn’t get lost - I hope that’s ok?
I am 42 with no family history and have a biopsy scheduled for this Monday with BiRAD 4 due to “indeterminate” micro calcifications. Trying to keep my cool but I am really not doing well mentally so going over everything in my head
I had a breast augmentation (lift and implants) back in 2013 few years after I was done nursing my daughter. The scar around my nipples (especially right nipple where he had to cut more into the skin for the lift) has always been a littlesore since then. I am very happy with the results so not complaining. But I always felt some mild soreness and almost like very mild nerve discomfort around there. And that's pretty much where calcifications are - just a bit above my nipple
Does anyone know if having a breast lift and/or implants can cause calcifications? My radiologist said "I kept looking and looking at the enhanced MRI and did you have any trauma to that area? I can't quite explain those calcifications. Maybe an injury?" And then she recommended a biopsy. And I am beating myself up for not bringing up the breast surgery. But then she knew I had implants and didn't bring it up either.
Any feedback? And please be kind about my decision to get implants. I am already beating myself up over that.

ilikedogs,
i too have microcalcifications. they are in the margin of an irregular mass. i have my biopsy tomorrow.
good luck to you!!!!!

I replied to your other post too Ilikedogs. Yes, trauma from prior surgery definitely could result in benign calcifications that are “indeterminate” until biopsy.

Ilikedogs, I just wanted to say please don't beat yourself up. You did nothing wrong. Your implants surely would have shown up on the scans. Your doctor sounds very thorough and hopefully a biopsy will put your mind at ease. Wishing you well.

FWIW I had a biopsy for calcifications a few years ago (benign). I, too, have implants. It never came up that the implant surgery could have caused the calcifications. Don't beat yourself up a) for not mentioning it and b) getting implants. From what I understand, there are so many potential reasons to have calcifications, and most are benign and nothing to worry about. I'm glad your biopsy is so soon, and I hope you get good results quickly! I had a biopsy yesterday...now in waiting mode.

Thank you for this! Every bit of encouraging info helps.
Good luck with your results! Please keep me posted. You found something new other than calcifications this time around?
It is so nerve wrecking.

ilikedogs, yes, unfortunately now I have a "mass" in the other breast (nothing to do with the calcifications from the other breast). Fun times, indeed. Seriously, if I could just lob these things off, I would. But damn...society doesn't make that an easy decision. I hate that vanity is even in question when we're talking about our health. I have had implants for 20+ years, with very little actual breast tissue (ironic, eh?) so BMX+reconstruction is something I would consider, even if the results are negative. It's nerve wracking every 6 months when it's time for testing...and they seem to be finding more each year. I feel like it's a ticking time bomb that's going to catch up to me at some point. Why take the risk that I don't catch something in time?

Hi! That’s exactly how I feel. This is my first breast-related scare and all I can think about is “Can I just take everything out and increase the size of my implants and just call it a day?” I didn’t realize that they take nipples out too. That scares me a bit. But if someone said that I can have my breast looking somewhat natural, I would just do it too.

There are nipple-sparing and nipple-reconstruction options. It's truly incredible what is possible these days!
