Latissimus dorsi flap vs Implant: what did you do?

I have the option to do either a Lat flap or implants for my reconstruction. If you had the same options available to you before, what did you choose? Are you happy with your decision? (I do not have DIEP as an option since I don't have enough tissue for it)

LD flap usually involves an implant along with the flap.

Why are you being offered LD flap as an option? Just curious, b/c it's usually only done when there are issues with doing implant only due to previously radiated skin. Moving a muscle is a big deal.

I had a uni LD flap done, and it basically ruined my life. I am in constant pain and extreme discomfort, six years out. Other women have LD flap done with great aesthetic results and no permanent physical issues, so my case is not the norm, but I'm just putting it out there.

It is my understanding that I'm given the LD flap option if I don't want implants. I'm assuming that I'm not given the option for both LD flap + implants because I've got small breasts?...

If I do choose LD flap-it will be my own tissue, more natural in how it feels, and there is less chance of needing maintenance in the long run. But my PS said that implants are more 'predictable' in how it will look-I would just need to be prepared for the maintenance, higher chance of additional surgery, less natural, etc. I'm weighing both options-they both have pros and cons.

I'm sorry that you had such a negative experience. Yes, moving muscle is a big deal, for sure. I'm leaning towards the implants since that is what my PS said is 'optimal' for my case, and what she would get done if she was in my shoes. I would have a small implant added to my left to match the size...and truthfully, I'm not a fan of unpredictable outcomes after all the surprises that have occurred over my BC journey so far. I'm thinking that if I'm not happy with the implants later, that I still have options to correct them, take them out, or try an LD flap later. Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it.

    You're very welcome.

And I agree with your logic--you can't undo the LD flap, but you can always have it done down the road if you are unhappy with the implant.

If you're on FB, there is a LD flap group one can join. Lots of good feedback from women there who have had both good and bad (mainly good) experiences with the surgery.

As someone who had LD flaps plus implants with good results, I just wanted to chime in and say I think you are wise to try the implants before LD flap, particularly since that is what your plastic surgeon recommended

Thank you both. I appreciate your responses. I feel better about getting implants now-at least to begin with!

I was hesitating since there seems to be more positive stories connected with the flap surgeries in comparison with the implant ones in my research. Not sure why.

Anyway, I'm glad this forum exists to help women out in all the stages of this crazy journey. I wish you both well.

Hi. I had single Lat Flap done after failed implant due to recurring infections (possibly due to radiation). I have had no issues from the Lat Flap and I work full-time as a flight attendant (range of motion is good). It's been almost 2 years now. I'm happy I went with implants initially. Good Luck!
