Recurring bloody breast cyst
Has anyone had any experience of a recurring breast cyst with bloody aspirate. A year ago, I developed another breast cyst. It was aspirated but looked normal so not sent for cytology. It refilled again within 2 days. A few weeks later it was aspirated again but this time it contained a lot of blood. It was sent to cytology and was normal. Unfortunately It refilled again within a few days but they told me to come back in 3 months to have it reassessed but it ended up being almost 6 months because of COVID. It was then aspirated again and once again it contained lots of blood but cytology was normal. At this point they said I needed to come back again in 3 months and they would decide what to do. I can feel that it has refilled again and seems bigger this time. It is also sometimes painful but in a different way to how my cysts usually feel. This will be the 3rd time it has refilled (2 of which were bloody). Should I be asking for more testing?? Has anyone had any similar experiences?? Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Joolz! I"m not sure what to say since you're talking about a cyst. I know others on here have had bloody nipple discharge that led to excision for some even though it wasn't cancer.... you are talking about a cyst though.... I am not knowledgeable about these kinds of things... I would say to ask them who else you could follow up with trying to prevent, if possible, recurrence. I'm assuming it is radiologist draining the cysts? I think it's worth having more of a discussion about recurrence and can anything else be done. At the same time many on this site have talked about have many cysts with some of these needing drained... just seems like you're going through more than you should need to with the same cyst and something additional could help?

Thank you so much for replying...I really do appreciate it! I am due to see the radiologist again next week and I have a follow up appointment with a breast consultant. My situation has changed over the weekend. I found a hard pea sized lump just under my nipple on the other breast. Saw my GP today and they’ve referred me urgently. Really hoping it’s just yet another cyst but it is a very hard lump and doesn’t feel at all like my cysts normally do. Feel sick with worry. Thanks again for replying...I really do appreciate it!!

Joolz - Really sorry about your latest development, especially. I did want to say though that I have a friend who just had a breast cyst removed. I don't know if hers was bleeding, but I do understand there was fluid involved and it was a recurring thing. I was extremely worried for her after she was referred to a breast surgeon following a mammogram, but they had seemed pretty certain it was a cyst and apparently it was. They told her it was an "inflamed cyst" and "had to come out". That's the only experience I know of regarding cysts.
Back in 1972 I had a lump that they could not determine whether it was a cyst or tumor (I was 19). At that time there were none of the imaging possibilities that we have now, so they had to excise it to tell what it was. It turned out to be a benign fibroadenoma and I was told not to worry. Fast forward to 2018 and I developed breast cancer in the exact same location where I'd had the biopsy at age 19. My understanding though, is that today they are much better at knowing what is a cyst vs a tumor, so I would imagine that your supposed cyst really is a cyst. Hoping that your latest discovery is nothing much at all and just a benign aberration of some sort.
Take care and do come here for support if you think you need it. There will always be some here who can relate to some aspect of your situation.

So glad you posted ThreeTree! I didn't want to say too much b/c I am limited about these things... tho if it were me I really would want it out in hopes that would end recurrence. Another benefit then would be pathology results. Soooo glad you were referred to a breast consultant Joolz!!! I'm hoping that actually means a surgeon....?

Yes, I am due to see a radiologist and breast surgeon next week on Tuesday. I saw my GP yesterday about a new lump on the other side. This one feels very different to how my cysts usually feel. It’s pea sized and hard just behind my nipple. Going to the rapid assessment clinic on Friday morning and I’m feeling so so worried! Thank you ThreeTree and LivinLife...I really appreciate your responses!
