Cancer Survivors Day

Hoping I’m not the only one who feels “meh” about this day. I don’t feel, for me, that this is a day for celebrating.

I’ve been living with MBC for a little over 4 years now.. I certainly don’t feel like a survivor. Maybe I’m just being too sensitive but I’ve been hiding posts on social media all day; I just don’t want to see them.

More power to you if you celebrate today.. and I do not mean any sort of disrespect. With all of the ups, downs, unknowns, and daily issues we MBCersdeal with, I don’t see much to “celebrate”.

I saw this day mentioned on Instagram but I’m meh about it too. I really don’t feel like it applies to me. Anyway, just another day really.

I saw some "walk for survivors" coverage on the local news. They interviewed one "survivor" who talked about her chemo and radiation treatments and she was so happy to be a survivor. I was happy for her good feelings, but in my head I am thinking "I hope you were told there is no cure for breast cancer so enjoy every day and year you have because you never know when or if it will come back". The last day I saw my old MO, she said "I think you're going to be all right". Nine years later I was diagnosed with MBC. I was shocked beyond belief!

Lee, your experience mirrors mine and I hear you on the challenge of people saying they are survivors. I remember one of the last things my MO said to me when I was treated for early stage BC. "You're going to be just fine." I don't hold it against him, I had almost 16 years between original diagnosis and stage IV, but it's something that sticks with me. Having said that, deep down I always knew that it would come back which is why I have shed few tears since the MBC diagnosis. I did my crying in 2001.. now I just carry on to the best of my ability.

Thanks for all of the comments, ladies. I appreciate it. I was also told by my gyn after my first 2a diagnosis. She said “you will be one and done with this." Umm, nope. It was back less then 6 years later.

I agree with @sadiesservant, I did my crying in 2011 and part of 2017. Now I'm just taking whatever as it comes and live life the best I can.

To All; Well a De Novo DX put away all that "You'll be fine after all of this". What I got was my MO telling me "The first year is going to feel like the worst year of your life" . I thank him for his honesty.

I told a community based oncologist (not mine - I go to an academic medical center) speaking to our local support group around 2015 that I would only consider myself a cancer survivor once I died from something else…
