edited June 2021 in Not Diagnosed But Worried

Had my first abus yesterday because of heterogenously dense breasts. Always had normal yearly 3D cad mammograms. Last normal mammogram was in Nov 2020.

Compression was at level 3 highest - she asked it it was tolerable but I think it was worse than regular mammogram. My left breast was pressed down by the u/s that tonight I can barely touch the skin on the side closest to the middle of my chest. Took an 800 mg ibuprofen before bed
My right breast findings says there is a possible mass versus artifactual shadowing in the right breast at 10:00, 7.5 cm from the nipple. Additional imaging with diagnostic ultrasound is recommended.

From research I did I notice that abus has a lot of artifactual tendencies to show up - and recalls back for additional pictures.

Anyone else experience this - feeling anxious but trying not to stress as sometimes artifacts can occur due to improper position or shadowing.

Welcome Barbara! I"m not familiar with abus.... I have the same questions as the Mods.. will follow-up be scheduled? Since it was a recommendation I'd encourage you to call them sooner than later if you haven't heard from a "live person" yet... hanging in limbo is difficult, esp. when there has been a recommendation made. Please let us know once you hear something...

Thank you Livin! ABUS is Automated Breast Ultrasound - it works with you lying down and a technician placing an automated plate over your breasts that compresses and moves automatically taking pictures. It is recommended for woman who have presented with dense breast tissue after mammogram.

Since I just received my results two days ago, and the report stated that the clinic will follow-up with me, I will wait till I hear something next week. If not I will give them a call. I believe the next ultrasound will be a hand-held one performed by the radiologist and I will know that day before I leave. The ABUS is new technology and from what I have read there are more unnecessary call backs for artifactual things that show up that are distorted in some way due to breathing or operator manipulation. I have level 3 heterogeneously dense breasts but not extremely dense.

Thank you for your response and I will update my post after my next appt.

Hi Barbara77, I don’t have much helpful insight. I am 40 and have same level of density as you. I am scheduled to have ABUS in early July because of density and moms breast cancer.

I debated for quite a while on ABUS vs MRI. Finally decided in ABUS. Had 3D mammo in Feb. 2021. Initial imagining showed asymmetry. It did not persist on spot compression.

I did not know ABUS was known for recalls. Happy that you shared this

I am sending positive vibes your way. Let me know when you know more.

Thank you Petyab for your response-they did call my home at 1 pmto reschedule but I work and didn't get the message - my Dad is 96 and doesn't hear well but he knows about me needing follow up. Imaging center is open on Saturday so I will give a call and rschedule the second u/s.

yez I did some research on line and listened to some Ted talks and the Abus is a recommended supplemental screening especially for dense breasts.

It found that despite "considerable inter-observer variability," all radiologists had improved diagnostic performance when examining both ABUS and mammography scans. Additionally, they found that shadowing from the dense tissue was the most common cause of false positive ABUS interpretations.

Just wanted to report that I had my recall wand ultrasound with the technician this AM. They used color-Doppler.

She took pictures and then took them into the lady radiologist. I had to wait still lying down in case more pictures were needed. She peeked in and said she was still waiting on radiologist. I was stressing of course. Next the radiologist came in and said hi how are you - so I am happy to report that everything is fine. The area in question was only dense fibroglandular tissue that had overlapped when the ABUS was being taken. I asked her about the fact that I had taken a deep breath and how the machine moved during the abus from medium compression to high compression could have been the cause - she said no I did everything right.

Definitely a relief and I am back on my yearly mammogram schedule. I can now empathize what other woman are going through and have gone through with breast cancer diagnoses and interim waiting for their results.

We all need to be proactive and keep informing our friends and co-workers about our experiences. I just told my lady boss about my results and she has never heard about breast density. Let's keep each other imformed!! Education and support is the best way to fight back against this dreadful affliction. Let's educate our men too!
